View Full Version : Acronyms on the 'Net carrying over to Real Life

Nearly all of us have used acronyms on the Internet, be it over Instant Messaging programs, on IRC, on message boards, or even in e-mail. Some of us have done it so much, in fact, that it's become a part of us--sometimes I think to myself, LOL, that was funny, rather than hahaha, that was funny. [Pitiful, neh?] My girlfriend, when sup[rised by something, has actually been known to say "Oh-Em-Gee" rather than "Oh My God." XD I'm sure that at least some of you have caught yourselves doing or thinking similar things, as well.
One of these times that particularly stand out in my mind is when my girlfriend was on the phone with her mother (who doesn't particularly like me, heh), and her mother had said some off-the-wall derogatory crap about me. Sony goes and tells her, "Double-U Tee Eff, Mom?" From the one side of the conversation I heard after that, Sony was trying to get out of explaining what "WTF" meant. XD
So, what stories have you got? Ever catch yourself saying "pawned" (which is how I actually pronounce "pwnd")? Ever had to explain to non-'Net-savvy friends or family what a series of letters you blurted out meant?

The only word I actually use is "lol", cuz it's shorter than haha and I don't feel like saying "lauging out loud"
That's it

I don't know about Internet/IM language overlaps in my dialect but I do use 'owned' regulary in a conversation from my online gaming.

I have some friends saying "LOL" about pretty much everything. I'm thinking of canceling my friendship with them.

I've caught myself thinking "lol" at times, but it never really escapes into my speech. I do use "brb" sometimes around my net-friends when I'm too lazy to say "I'll be right back" or if I just feel like being weird. My friends, though, use "pwned" all the time.
OH MAN. The worst possible thing is to use that stuff in real life. I mean, with NOTE PASSING? COME ON, guys. "WTF" or "OMG" isn't as bad, but seriously: the biggest sign you're a loser is writing "LOL" on a note.
Middle school girls and geeks, you KNOW what I mean.
But the ultimate example of a DORK is my friend Nelson who SAYS: "LAWL" (you know, for "lol") outloud. The worst part is, that even though he is a big loser, I am a bigger loser for saying, "Hahaha, you said "LOL." every single time.) It is a fad that is catching on.
Oh, and another thing:
I been saying "o rly?" / "ya rly!" [Oh really? Yah, REALLY!"] (and often consectutively) all semester. No great reason why; just to yell in the hallways, mostly. =P
That one's for you, Sandal. -_-;
I used OMG in one of my english writing assignments. I actually got bonus marks from my teacher because he said it was creative.

Sadly, I've not been in any kind of school for several years, now, and that sounds all too familiar. ;_;
BUT I HAVE AN EXCUSE! I was a consultant at a web-based company, so of course I was surrounded by geeks! So, er... I had to, uh, fit in. Yeah, that's it. XD

Same here, "owned" has become an everyday word for me.

I mainly use ZOMG! and wtf in my conversations, it usually makes one of my friends really mad and annoyed, but its fun to say.
What does ZOMG mean? is it just OMG and a Z infront of it?

Hahah. Sorry, I seriously do say "lol" irl :) why? idk. And my friend says "lawl" as well only sometimes. The biggest thing is when we play some card games and I totally own her face, I say that "You just got owned!":) Cus I'm so chill 8]

i think in a very sub-concious state of mind, i do say lol but i think it's once or twice. but i do use ownage, owned, pwned and similar words like those. but it's not very often as i dont really use them online too.. it's not like i play an online game and say that pretty often.

Definetly lol, is the most used, and i actually told someone to STFU. Without using the actual words, u know, just letters, which is weird.

I only tend to say "laugh-out-loud" in my head when something funny happens. I've only heard "owned," as well as O-M-G a few times.
nope ive never done it but. the last person that called me a "noob" at taekwondo got his ass handed to him in pieces.. both violently and after in actual comp, experience in streetfighting cant lose to constent training.
