Necrobumpage: When (if at all) is it all right, and when is it just plain annoying?

For those of you that don't know what "necrobumping" is, here is a definition: When you respond to a thread on a forum, it "bumps" it to the top of the list in most modern forums. When you respond to a "dead" thread (a thread that has had no activity for quite a long time), it's called "Necrobumping."

At some forums I used to frequent quite often, there was a member named capt_taco who I was friends with. I took about six months aff from those boards, due to lack of Internet time, and when I came back, I did a little search for my user name, just to see who had been talking about me. XD capt_taco had a message with my name in it (he said he was sorry for "pulling a Sarteck" and dissapearing for a few months, but he had done so because he was engaged to be married.)

After hearing the good news, I wanted to give my congratulations to the guy, so I Necrobumped the four-month-old thread. Well, in that time, capt_taco and his fiancee had broken up. capt_taco took it all well, joking about it and everything, but I know that some other people would have been pissed if soomething like that was brought back up--"let the past stay in the past." In fact, I had a very old thread there from October of 2004, when I leanred I was going to be a Dad. I was so happy, but my girlfriend had an abortion, and I was heartbroken. Had someone necrobumped that thread, I would have been both sad and angry, and probably bit a few heads off.

There are also other reasons why Necrobumpage is bad, but I suppose there might be cases where it is good, as well. WHat is your opinion?

i don't see wots wrong with necrobumpage...
I mean if the threads still there then why not post in it?
seems like a wasted thread if you don't...

its sounds like necrobumpage can suk but if the thread is that old why dont the adminstrators or moderators just throw it in the recycle bin thing or was this at a site that doesnt do that?

If it's so old it's been bumped out of the forum, I'd just make a new thread. It's only annoying to me because instead of making a new, clean thread, someone bumps an old thread that has 20 million posts in it...so now that thread is active in the forum, and you can't 'legally' post another one about it until it's gone. So now you have this thread filled with outdated garbage, but you can't makea new, cleaner one because it's active on the forum.

It is alright for me. Nothing to bother at least I may say. But I do believe it is quite annoying for the administrators.

This is at the [adult swim] message board, and no, they don't have one there. Heh.

HOWEVER, we do have one here, yet (as you can plainly see) -this- thread was never "recycled." ;)

Whoa theres some massive necrobumping xD

Whats your username on the AS board? Yeah there are people that have a tendency to bring up ancient threads, especially if they had them in their bookmarks months ago and they decide 6 months later to catch up and reply to the posts =_=

I'm "Sarteck" just about everywhere I go. XD Seriously, not trying to toot my own horn, but I was pretty famous there. I even coded a bit of JavaScript that SwimTorrent (then an Admin) used officially as part of the site. XD (It ws originally intended for his signature, but he and I both thought it would be better in the Announcements bit).

And yes, people do that... In fact, I was doing something of the like last night. XD

Well my opinion is kind of divided.
On one side is good to nebrobumpage in cases you will like to reconnect with someone you really got a nice conection. In some others, like the marriage stuff is kind of back due to the fact some people may not like it. But you also are not a mind reader to know the unfold of the events of these person's life on the time you've been away. I guess you have to be careful the way you approach the person just in case. At leas thats my opinion.

Necrobumage can be a problem. Some newbs may necrobumage a 6 month old thread from page 2 or 3 and then get flammed for it expecting everything to be alright. If its an hour or so old its ok but if its more than 2 months old then you should be wary of flammers.

There is nothing here to discuss.

The age of a topic is irrelevant, only what is posted in it matters.

If it's and old/new, 5 seconds old topic that was bumped, whilst adding nothing new to the discussion, we can all, I hope, agree that it was pointless spam (oh the redundancy).

Hmm, I guess you have to careful when you say something in a thread? So that when it does get 'necrobumped' you have nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.

A lot of people necro bump for the fun of it, just to revive an old thread and wipe off the dust from the link, to re-read some of the memorable and (dumb) posts users post.

I have no particular opinion about it but all I can suggest is to avoid discussing really personal things and also avoid those situations that may be subjected to change.

Sure, we all get excited with present things but always remember to think ahead of time and have an open mind. Though everything seems perfect at the moment, it's best not to get your hopes up too high, otherwise you may come crashing down real hard.

I'm really sorry to hear about that abortion bit, must have been really heartbreaking for you *hugs*

Well, in my opinion, "Necrobumping" can have the very same effect that "Necromancy" has.

Necromancy, the dark art of raising the dead, can have some very different effects. You can ressurect a loved one, similar to ressurecting a thread which holds memories of those you cherish. Such experiances could be accepted, and even enjoyed.

However, the side effects of this may also be brutal. The one you raise 'from the dead' might not be the same person before death. Let's face it; all users on this forum go through some change. As well, the person (or thread) you resurrect might not appear as satisfying as your memory holds.

Whatever the case may be; be wary. Using any sort of necromatic art does cost a little bit of your own soul. Trust me, I know. :P

Necrobumping? Um... just be careful of what you type, then, I guess. It's better than to start a new thread, or else the moderators might get mad. I guess it also depends on the topic. If it's something really personal, then just leave it, I guess.

Speaking of Necrobumpage. lmao.

The only time it bothers me is in the Debate/Anime Arena sections. If something has been overdebated, and a verdict has been made, it pisses me off to see some random newb just bump the thread with a one-liner - neglecting to read the other posts - and just go against the already made decision.

I have done this a few times but I had no idea that it upset people so mush.
I will stop but what else should I do.
