It's really hard for me to compare Samurai 7 and Samurai Champloo, because the action in both of them is very different, and they both have their share of up's and down's. But Samurai Champloo is still a pretty cool anime to watch.

Mmm, Champloo. A true anime masterpiece in my eyes. I recently picked up the DVDs, and I'm impressed by Mugen's english actor. I mean, sure, he sounds like good ol' Spike some of the time but he did really well.

Jin and Fuu's have yet to grow on me, however.

Can't wait for the new episodes, awwww yea.

Samurai Champloo... is it as good as i've heard or is it crappy? my friend says it is but he also said its hip-hoppish. true or not true?

mgviperman
01-20-2005, 03:43 PM
the soundtrack is all hip-hop, but it's very well implemented with the anime. i don't think it's crappy at all :)

Tammy
01-20-2005, 07:13 PM
It has alot of hip hop elements integrated into the anime, such as: fighting styles, some breaking steps; music, scratching beatboxing etc. If you like hip hop itll make the anime even better, you should just watch the first episode and give it a shot. Obviously by all the comments peopel have made this is an awesome anime :)

01-21-2005, 08:13 PM
I have the DVD, and I have to say i'm fairly impressed with the dub. Mugen's VA sounds heavily like Spike at times, but other times it's just really unique. All in all i'm impressed with his Job. Jin and Fuu's VA have yet to grow on me, but thats probably because i've only seen episode 1 off of my dvd XD

Not all anime has to have such a direct plot. Like Naruto or like DBZ. or even FMA. FLCL, if you've seen it, it wasn't very plotty, all pretty random. But it did have a meaning in the end.

Uzumaki-Kun
01-25-2005, 06:13 AM
Naruto and FMA have good plots because Naruto wants to become Hokage and Ed wants his mom back. In Samurai Champloo they are after a Samurai who smells like sunflowers for no apparent reason.

Its a journey, about them getting into situations. You don't know why Fuu is searching for him yet.

I never said the other anime's plots were bad. I said they were different compared to SC.

Fuu is after the sunflower samurai because he killed her family.

Champloo is like a remix of typical samurai drama. So it's based around a revenge plot. Fuu mentions why she's after the sunflower samurai in one episode.

Fuu is a ditz, so she's bound to get into trouble.

Kinda like my views on Naruto.

ANYWAYS.

I need to rewatch episodes...I remember hearing Fuu mention that he killed her mother or something like that somewhere. Blah. either way, it's a revenge plot, those are common to Samurai Dramas. Hell, look at the kenshin, thats loaded to the brim with revenge.

I watched the first 10 episodes yesterday, and watched 14 more episodes up to 24 in one sitting today. I really like the style... it's very artsy. I was watching the subbed versions because that's all I could find, and I noticed that this anime is rather difficult to translate. There are just toooo many Japan only things that are very hard to translate into English. I'm glad I'm not doing it :face82:

You should, it really adds to the overall feel of the anime I think. But if I didn't understand Japanese I don't think I would want to pause and read those notes all the time. They go by too fast.

I really liked Samurai Champloo. Very entertaining. The fight sequences were great too. All the slashing with swords, cutting things up and break-dance fighting...ah the memories.

I want to own this one but I keep trying to find it for cheap and I can't. Dang it all.

The last two episodes are worth the entire series two times over. For a short 24 ep anime (I usually prefer 50 ep ones for rounder stories) it was a very well done and fun anime.

I prefer the subbed over the dubbed but the dub isn't that bad. It's fun to hear Mugen "growl" as he speak in the subbed version, fits him so well.

So now that I brought this thread back to life, who wants to chat about Samurai Champloo? :)

I'm a HUGE Cowboy Bebop fan, so Champloo appeals to my tastes very well. It was a great anime and I really loved the characters. And over course the music gave it nice style. My favorite aspect were the fight scenes though. The contrast between Mugen and Jin was also great.

Anyone notice the fact that the type of glasses Jin wears hadn't even been invented yet back then? XD (glasses were very uncommon, period, but his are a little ahead of their time)

Im gonna go with a 10/10 -

Reasons are - I did think there was a story line and that it followed it pretty good the reason it may not seem like it is because they dont go into any real detail about the past in it. Which made you go crazy trying to think of who and what the Samurai that smelt of Sunflowers is or looks like I enjoyed this Anime alot - it has alot of slapstick humor which makes it even better with all the action seens in it :)

My 2 cents

I used to feel this way, but I cant justify the greatness of a series based solely on its conclusion. Its the journey not the destination.

It probably does in fact deserve a 7.5 or an 8, but from my enjoyment level, I give it a 7. It had more potential than it delivered.

Kryptin2007

It was a interesting way to end the story really, give you basically only a smige of the past and then bam throw it all at you in the last few episodes not many anime do that that i have seen, which is one of the reasons i liked it :)

I know there wasn't any definite "ship" in the anime, but did anyone else get the feeling that in the last eps Mugen wanted to save Fuu in a more than a friend way? Plus I honestly think that Fuu was in love with Mugen by the end of the series. Even though if she had to choose between the two Jin would be better. But there is something so Smexy about MugenXFuu.

No the Manga starts in a similar way, but it has different little stories that were not in the anime, kind of like extra stories that "could have" happened between episodes and such. It starts a little different too.

Also, the manga shows a little bit more from Mugen toward Fuu that makes you think that it is possible that he did really "like" or "love" her; where as the anime doesn't so much. Even though there really isn't any romance in either the anime or the manga, often times I felt that it hinted that Fuu might "like/love" Mugen in the end. ;)

I have found that when people who dont "really like anime" are willing to watch any good anime, they find it to be pretty good. Anime kind of gets a bad rep from people in general.

The reason why people are willing to watch this anime is because its just "cool". Stylish samurai who fight with rap beats in the background is just kinda badass. Its one of the less "geeky" anime.
