Everybody is free to move but 'your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins'.
How is this for the freedom of speech, can people say whatever they want? This was a topic of discussion in the netherlands after a writer for a newspaper was killed. He wrote about the islam, and insulted a lot of people. One of those people killed him....

Well its a basic truth in the Freedom of Speech. As long as what you say is true, you can legally say it but no one has to listen to it. And they have a right to respond even if it isnt legally correct to do so.

What you say doesn't have to be true all of the time. You can say "the sky is red" or "I can bench press 800 pounds" if you feel like it. I'm pretty sure the only time you can't legally lie is when your lie is damaging to another person. If you came out and wrote "Tom Cruize is gay" on a newspaper - that would be a lie and your likely to get sued for it.

I think that it is more a matter of being able to say what you want as long as you are prepared to take the consequences for saying what you want. Also people who are in positions of authority should not say whatever they feel like. Sometimes freedom of speech should be the freedom to say nothing at all!

Just because you are free to say what you want, does not mean you should blurt out anything that comes to mind. It might be a good idea to think about what you are going to say because when it comes right down to it, if a person is offended enough, the law doesn't matter to them anymore. That goes for people that run our countries too, so watch out...they might 'legally kill you' (a sarcastic remark about Terri S.)

Well it all depends on the contents of the article. People tend to generalize the muslim community as a "whole". People think every muslim is a fundelmentalist (sp?). However, this is obviously not true.
I leave you with a quote that caused quite a stir on another forum I post on.
"Not all muslim are terrorists, but every terrorist so far is muslim"
I believe people possess the power of free speech, however there is a fine line between what you should say. For example the newspaper article.

Freedon of speech comes with the consequence of your words. If you're free to say what you want the people are free to respond how they feel, if they have any response at all. If you insult someone you're likely to feel the repercussions, so be prepared. 'Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins'?
I sure don't know where it begins if you don't know how to treat people nicely.

Yeah freedom of speech for some and.. er... cookies for the others? Freedom of Speech is an obvious political and personal human right. Sadly some people choose to hide behind "freedom of speech" as just an excuse to be racist and bigoted. I honestly believe that some people just shouldn't have the right to an opinion. The world would be a much better place if say the British National "race hate" party would all just die! or eat cookies and forget about it.

Or maybe the could just eat cookies until they were so fat that they died. Anyway, just because you have freedom of speech does NOT mean you have freedom of idiocy. People get confused with that.
(Well, actually, you are free to be an idiot, but...nevermind.)

man, some people abuse freedom of speech, for example: this guy at my school wrote an essay on mexican independance day, and said a lot of crap he shouldn't have. and also said taht we should wrap mexcians in their flag, beat them, set them on fire, and throw them over the border. this certainly caused an uproar and now, he is under police watch, and switched schools. freedom of speech is awesome, but don't abuse it.

freedom is just a word used to make people believe they have more control over their lives. in reality it is more like restriction of speech but freedom just sounds so much better. true freedom is something we as people can never have because there will always be people who abuse it. we are only as free as our restrictors allow.

I somewhat agree. I actually didn't realise this. Learn something new everyday.

Total freedom would be total anarchy. If everyone was free to do what ever he or she wanted to do, there would be no government or no law. The strong would overtake the weak and society as we now it would cease to exist. No one ever wants total freedom or total freedom as such an idea is not something that we should work for. I am not saying that would should restrict ourselves, but that as a whole, as a society we make laws and rules by which to live by and if someone does break a rule or law then there should be a just punishment for such an infraction. I myself would not want to live in a world were murders can murder, rapists can rape, and robbers can steal. Total freedom doesn't sound so nice now does it?

i think you have the right of speech in and against the court of law which means you do have a limit but more freedom then other country.

freedom of speach is good, but only if it is used right. I was reading last night about the american guy who went on air and told everyone that they should assasiate the president of venezuala, i htink that is going a tad too far
also for anyone looking at the British news, we are now deporting people who glorify death (in a terrorist way) and people who applaud terrorist acts. That i agree with, especially when its attacks against the country they are living in. But it does show that free speach does have a line
