OK things you need to know about movie maker.

1) it does not like big files: to help avoid freezing up in mid-work there are a few things that can help.

A) limit your clip sizes.
by this I mean dont import entire videos to edit into movie maker if you can get TMPGEnc to pre edit your clip range save these to a separate file and import them when your ready to use those sections.

B) if your not timing to the music for your AMV you can build your video in parts and save them separately then when your happy with the results of each part make the whole thing into one file and add the music. (this is not likely on AMVs though)

C) remember to delete previously used clips from the clips board before importing more (you have them saved already in another file why waste your processing resources).

2) always have a set idea where you want to go with your video:

A) know what song and have some idea what video source you want to pair with it.also be sure to chose a song your willing to hear repeatedly in short parts.

B) know the style of video you want to make comedy, drama, action, romance...etc

C) also know what form of video your trying to achieve as listed by Nanase story, timed to music, timed to event and lyrics ...etc...

this will help you get your clips ready in advance as well as dictate what kind of clips you'll need.

3) since WMM is a process hog you might want to reduce the amount of background processes on your computer (this I wont describe because if you dont know how to do it already its risky to close processes you dont know what they do) what I will suggest is not having ten windows open messenger on voice and a game playing at the same time as you try and make a video.

4) WMM transitions: these are used to go from one clip to another with a bit of a splash in between there are quite a few available from fades to 3 dimensional transitions in WMM the transitions cut down the length of the clips it is used between you will need to experiment to know how much each affects the length and timing of the two clips.
each transition and video effect you add to your AMV will increase the load on WMMs processing be carefull not to overload your AMV with these simply to avoid WMM freezing before you can finish.

5) auto save if I remember correctly is default at every 5 minutes this will save a copy to file in WMM's file format just in case you crash when you restart the program will ask if you want to retrieve the lost file and will reload from that file.

6) on WMM you can edit clips before adding them to the timeline just select the clip and press play in the viewer box below you will see a cut icon this will cut the clip where you stoped it you can move the clip back and forth with the viewer controls.

7) WMM is a drag and drop program when your happy with the clip in question and done editing it in the viewer just drag the clip to the timeline it will snap to the last position available.

8) if your useing clips with a sound track and dont want the original sound right click the clip in the timeline and mute. this will only mute the clip chosen and not affect the music track.

theres a lot more but this should help those who want to use movie maker get started.
