05-28-2006, 07:17 PM
Philosophical ones. The ones that you read, then read again, then have to re-read bits, then say "I'm sorry what, oh right....... I see." Then you go off for about an hour and think about it. They are really cool books. But like I said, kinda thick and most of the meaning is lost in translation.
Read Sophie's world. That was his most popular book. It's about a book, inside a book, inside a book.

Haruki Murakami - his books are just so surreal, but at the same time utterly and unquestionably believeable. I've Read Kafka on the Shore, The Wind Up Bird Chroncile, Norwegian Wood and Dance Dance Dance so far. I'd love to read them all, and the rate I'm buying (bye-bye student loan) I will have done soon :winking56
Just started to read Banana Yoshimoto recently, but I wasn't that impressed, although in fairness I've only read the short story ones so far... about to start Amrita in the next week or so, so I'm reserving judgement!
Oh yeh and in agreement with everyone above, Tamora Pierce rocks!!!

More serious themed authors--jostein gaarder (sophies world, the solitaire mystery), paulo coelho (veronika decides to die), carl sagan (Contact, Dragons of eden, Comet) Daniel dennet (darwin's dangerous idea), Jared Diamond (Guns, Germs and Steel, Why sex is fun, etc.)

my favourite author... Hum, good question...
I like Terry Pratchet, he has a way of saying random things that are painfully true...

I'm probably missing a lot of writers, as I'm a little bit drowsy right now, but I really enjoy Terry Goodkind, Douglass Adams, Tom Robbins, and Neil Gaiman. I used to be a huge Robert Jordan fan (I'm really excited to see so many of them here!) but the last 2 books were kinda disappointing. The last one, I coudn't even make myself finish... I just read the parts with Perrin and Mat. And I ALWAYS finish a book if it's half decent.
i'm a hopeless romantic so aside from j.k. rowling and dan brown i also like judith mcnaught, johanna lindsey, julie garwood and susan elizabeth philips
George R.R. Martin. A Song of Ice and Fire is a glorious series.

I don't really have one favourite author. ^^'' The ones I do like:
Margaret Atwood - Her writing style is appealing, and her writing makes you think. She has a tendency, especially in her earlier novels, to abuse the male characters she creates, but overall she does a fine job of balancing plot and emotion.
Yann Martel - He wrote Life of Pi. No other reason is needed.
David and Leigh Eddings - For writing the Belgariad and Mallorean cycles. *Bows down low and worships*

Tolkien - LOTR. Need I say more? The best original fantasy work around, IMO. Truly inspiring.
Issac Asimov: I haven't read a whole lot of his books, but I Robot and a couple others I forgot the name inspired me greatly.
Salvatore: the Drizzt series. Period. The rest of his works simply lack that element of the black skinned, purple eyed elf.
Terry Pratchett: that is one super awesome writer. I devour his books.
Robert Jordan: although he did dissapoint me with his last book (Knife of Dreams is a goddamn failure! Robert, what's going on?!?), the rest of the Wheel of Time are awesome and I hope his next book will bring my interest in it back to where it was before (come on, I devoured his books!).

Though not anymore, when I was younger it used to be Jacqueline Wilson. Her stories were very simple, yet interesting.
Jules Verne and Alexander Dumas.
Jules Verne for writing "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (Captain Nemo is the most awesome character)
Alexandre Dumas for writing "The Count of Monte Cristo"

A classic. How could I not cite the Decameron...I am Italian and of top of that from Tuscany...it was obligatory. Glad you read the decameron or that you even heard of it. Most people here in the US do not know what it is....heck, this may sound absurd but is true...my english 9 teacher in HS did not even know what the Divine Comedy was, much less the Decamerone or who Petrarch was...(hello, just the guy that invented the sonnet???)
