View Full Version : Books Or Movies?

Well the title pretty much expalins it. Which do you like better? Books or movies? I like books a lot more than movies because they leave out so much action, scenes, and over all it just doesnt have the same effect on me as when im reading. If im watching a movie itll be like "Ok this is good...". While as with a book i cant put it down and will always want to read more.

I want to like books more, but movies are just easy to get into and watch. So, I'll have to say movies for this one.

Azalea
05-11-2006, 12:59 AM
Well I say both are Ok, because I only read a book that will be made into a movie :p

yumisan
05-11-2006, 09:33 AM
well..yeah...both are ok...i read and watch the movie too..
but movies are better since you just watch it but the sadest thing is they cut short the original story in the movie.

Neve

I would say that books are much better - I tend to never watch movies of books which I've read because they'll spoil the mental image I have of the characters.

Both are good, but movies are better only if they have everything or most things/plots included in it.

nice~
we've got a literature section now :D

well. books ftw.
simply because u can't expect a 2.5h movie to cover an entire book properly. have u actually seen a book turned movie that was properly done?

and its having the feeling of holding a book in ur hand and reading it. that's what makes it special :D

i like reading. not everybody does. but i do. :p

Lan
05-11-2006, 06:51 PM
well it depends
The movie is always nicer ,easier and etc
but if the movie is made on a book te book itself is a how lot better

Neve
05-11-2006, 06:55 PM
@ unwaken - I totally agree, the only one film that did the book justice to a certain extent was the LOTR trilogy, which were actually done well, instead of being a cheap rip-off of the story - although having said that, I still much prefered reading the books to watching the films. Other than that, I haven't seen a single film made from a book that has been anything like as good as the book was.

unwaken
05-11-2006, 06:59 PM
agreed.

u can't expect a movie to be exactly the same as a book because of the amount of detail a book gives and that's what non readers miss out on. the finer details in a story are enough to tell a story of its own.

and yeah. LOTR is maybe the only passable book turned movie around. im still not exactly satisfied with what they did but imho they did a decent job. :D

well... at least they got the casting right. :p

Books on average are better. But they require far to much time to read, and patience to finish. Both of which i am severly lacking. So as for which i prefer, i would have to say movies.

BOOKS FTW, BOOKS FTW! They have so much more excitement in them, plus, bad actors can kill the movie.

Both... Good books are just plain awsome...
Good movies are exciting for a while.. but they're still worth watching..

05-11-2006, 08:46 PM
Both...some movies are good to watch, like LOTR, although the book was better. Not to mention there aren't that much movies made by a book...
Animes are still better though :)

Can't really stand movies, I've never been able to take it seriously as a medium for "art" and so while I like ninjas headshotting people and explosions quite a bit in movies, if it contains any substance I don't want to see it in movie form. So books for me.

05-11-2006, 11:06 PM
Rofl... post this in the literature section, and what answer do you expect :P

Books are most definitely ftw - more depth of character possible, and I say this as a wannabe film director :)

both are ok but books that become movies can suck so i guess books

05-12-2006, 03:48 AM
I'm definatly a books kind of girl. Movies are an interpritation, but every time I read a book I have a different interpritation in my head. Plus, I can savor it over a longer period of time, and they are handy to always have in my bag, for either the bus or class or waiting for a friend at the airport. You can get all the details, and you can know what is going on inside someones head (without a cheesy voiceover).

ChansteR
05-12-2006, 07:12 AM
I think they are both ok, sometimes when they come out with the movie, it is actually better than the book but usually the book is better just because you have ur own way of seeing it. LOTR, the book was better, but the movie was still good, so it was all good and like Harry Potter, the book and movie are pretty good even though I prefer the book way more than the movie.

nyuu_chan
05-12-2006, 07:29 AM
definitely books for me. movies just don't give you any of the same detail or insight that you get in a book. like pylar said, books let you know what's going on inside someone's head. movies have the advantage of visuals (which i think is one of the reasons lotr movie was so good) and music, but a lot of them also have bad actors and dodgy script... so i vote for books

Z_Blitz
05-12-2006, 07:40 AM
I tend to focus more when reading a book as compared to when I'm watching a movie, which leads to a deeper understanding of the plot, characters, environment... etc. There are times when I'd rather watch the movie than read the book, specially if it doesn't suit my tastes <_<.

Momo
05-13-2006, 09:58 PM
um.... well I just think its okay both ;)
movies cuz its kinda easier way to get it
and books just to have fun and have a creative imaginations...

05-13-2006, 10:29 PM
movies because sometimes i get bored of reading the bokos so i think movies is better, even though books are sometimes detailed.

SLVR

HackEye

will have to say books, because they support learning and in a book there is more detail then a movie.

Sanzora
05-16-2006, 12:58 PM
It all depends on the book or the movie I must admit… Sometimes a book is so beautiful and then the movie limits the readers imagination, sometimes the book is vague and the movie enhances it. It all depends really… Both are quite good in their own rites, they’re two very different art forms.

adorkable
05-16-2006, 01:11 PM
Books definately. They explain so much more, with more description... And you can use your imagination more. You also know what is going on in the characters' emotions/feelings/mind.

Movies can sometimes be confusing. And it does limit your imagination. :p:

I'm just a book kind of person. Books > Movies. Period. xP

it depends on the story.. some are better read..and some are better watched. but you have to admit that when you read, it enhances a lot of things..vocabulary, imagination, creativity..plus it is more detailed. :musak:

I think they both are okay, but I pregerably choose Movies Cause I don't like readin that much (that doesn't mean I don't like it....) and I think movies are more exciting than books

books. They'll always outlive movies...in fact, BOOKs get made into movies, so books are superior

im more of a book person but movies that are made from movies sove me a week or so of reading

obvious troll
05-17-2006, 01:20 AM
Well, there are good books and bad books, just like there are good movies and bad movies, so it's kinda hard to compare, that's why I voted for both. But if you're talking about books that get turned into movies, I prefer books, the movies always miss something important from the book

Hits
05-18-2006, 06:58 AM
Movies almost never live up to the books. But I think Lotr and harry potter did pretty well interms of keeping true to the book. Though the problem I have with movies is that they really break my image of the characters and settings in the book.

Me being me I hate reading books. But when Lord of the Rings was looming over the cinema, I decided that I should at least read the damn thing.

On the 27th December I finished the 1st chapter and promptly went to the cinema to watch it. I hated it. So much missing, but then came round to the fact that the movie is just an adaptation and went to see it a further 6 times.

I also read I-Robot before I went to see it at the cinema, again what a pile of dross. I take particular offence at the 'this is losely based on a book by Asaac Asimov". WTF?

Although I did watch Nightwatch which I instantly fell in love with and desperately want to read the book as we only see a glimpse of the book in the movie and I'm intregued. Shame the books still in Russian and getting a release in June.

But my bets are on books anytime, but it's getting the time to read the blasted things!

well is it more movies v books or movie of a book v original
books and movies
books dont have age raitings a 6 year old can go in and buy the book of O and nothing happens if there is/ever will be a movie about said book there not going to let a 6 year old buy it

more in depth they cut som much out o lotr and other movies

even though movies are amusing and are ok to watch sometimes but books are much better because i like the details in books and books are very portable. ^.^

Isis
05-22-2006, 08:18 AM
I like both. It actually depends on the content and storyline. Some movies look great to watch but when you read the book, you're left all confused but sometimes the books totally own cause its all detailed and I can visualise through the words but when the movie comes out, it sometimes does the book good or does it damage

Toasty
05-22-2006, 01:06 PM
I happen to like both. I enjoy sitting down and watching a good movie as much as I enjoy reading a good book.

If this is about book vs. movie of book. Well, I do prefer the book. But like I said, I enjoy a good movie. So I tend to watch the movie before I read the book. I don't want to go into the moving thinking one thing and see something else happen. It's just easier for me that way. I don't want to ruin a movie because I read the book first. I know the book won't be ruined because the movie will mess the entire thing up. I've rarely seen a good movie remake. Movies can't be long enough to remake an entire book.

I guess the biggest difference between watching a movie and reading a book for me... is that I read more than I watch. This is simply because I can't lug the TV around with me all the time. Books are easier to transport. (and I don't have the money to buy something that could transport my movies with me.)

Elelith
05-22-2006, 06:30 PM
Movies are the greatest art form ever. I would never say that a movie, of a book is better than the book, that's just worng.

But the film is such a great thing. I love books, I do genuinely love books (I am a writer, if not a very good one) but you can do so much more with film.

Being a director is my dream. I would have to chose film over books, at a pinch. But only marginally.

YuRiPaWings
05-22-2006, 06:46 PM
I'll say books due to Harry Potter and Battle Royale. Yeah, the adaptation to film was cool and all but they changed so much that it cannot be forgiven. Books all the way.

Elelith
05-24-2006, 12:23 PM
Yeah, I'm not saying that adaptations of books are better. Far from it, the Harry Potter movies were entertaining, but nothing compared to the books. Same with Lord of the Rings.

The Will Of Gaara
05-24-2006, 12:38 PM
Meh, books. They provide you with much more knowledge than just mere movies.

Elelith
05-25-2006, 12:59 PM
Actually knowledge is a good point. I hate it when we are in class and the teacher says "Right, now today we are going to learn by watching a video." I don't care, what the school says, YOU CANNOT LEARN FROM WATCHING A MOVIE! They made us watch Schindler's List (awsome film BTW, not knocking the film,) but it doesn't help us prepare for our GCSEs now does it. Gah, that made me cross.

Cheryl
05-25-2006, 02:39 PM
Both are okay for me! Though it really depends on whether the movie made is good or not. Movies made from books are usually changed to shorten the script, and that just spoils the whole point of the story. However, I really liked the movie version of Harry Potter... XD But then again, the fourth movie really missed out a lot of parts. >.<

i put movies becuz books make me tired

alieraisu
05-25-2006, 05:02 PM
I have to say, usually a movie does no justice to the book. I prefer books to movies. However, movies about books are good when used in conjunction with a book. They also often get kids to want to read a book. My brother, after seeing narnia, read all 7 books! In a book, you also get to create the characters as you yourself see them, and you may pronounce names differently, etc. When you read, you make the book your own. I know I used to discuss Animorphs with my friends, and we would argue about the proper proninciation of Tobias and Hork-Bajirr. Therefore, books, definitely.

Elelith
05-25-2006, 05:06 PM
Actually, a nice compromise is audio books (unabridged audio books) because you can still get the story even if you are too tired to pick up a book and read. I always thought it was cheating this way, but so long as it's unabridged it's cool.

I like books better because with complex stories its better to read them. A good example of this is the lord of the rings. They were long ass movies but the book wasnt that bad. Another good example is queen of the damned. Because there were so many characters the movie couldnt get into it as much as the book could because then there would be to many conflicting storylines.

I like books better and plus you can take a book anywhere and read it but a movie you need a DVD player or a VHS player and a TV and you cant take a movie to camp or outside and they need technology while a book you dont need any of that unless it is dark.

I like books more better. I love trying to imagine what things would look like and how the scenes would come alive. In movies, they cut out some parts in the book. So that ruins it. Although the music in movies are a big plus. Books are much more fun to read over and over again that watching a movie over and over again.

Books are better because the movie doesn't tell everything from the book. Like in Chronicals of Narnia, they missed some things that were sort of important. Anyway, books are better and movies are okay because now you can really see it and pitcture it in your head.

06-27-2006, 04:29 PM

Books definatly....

Movies basically just go for the scenes where they can use the most Speacil effects nowdays...they don't worry bout the story line anymore..

But with books you stimulate your own imagination and you can as said before put it down and always come back to it..You can also read them anywhere unlike a movie...

Books Ftw!!

Both are alright. Books are for imagination. Movies are for visual entertainment. You are learning at the same time. Movies usually have deeper meaning, it is also an "art" for you to learn in watching.

Books.
You tend to learn more background information in a book.
Books don't have scenes taken out?
You can take a book anywhere really, though that's almost true about movies nowadays.
You get to choose what exactly a character looks like, not be shown.

I like books more, but I don't think that movies are bad. I think that books are improving our imagination, and our words resources become greater. But there are movies without book written first - so we should only enjoy them. Although, there are books that we always wanted to watch their filmed, for example Lord of the Rings (It was a bit dissapointing ~>_<~ ) or Silmarillion. I wonder how they would show scenes that I could only imagine?
To sum up - I think that answering the question what is better, book or movie, is a bit pointless, because everybody would choose different and this question will be without solution :D

Sometimes I'll read a book and think "What, I didn't get that. What a waste of time" Then I'll watch the film and think "Oh.... I see, this is better. I actually quite liked that."

On the flip side, I'll read a book and think "Wow, this is great, can't wait for the film to come out." Then I'll go watch the film and get really annoyed that they screwed it up.

However sometimes, very very rarely, I'll read a book, love it, then go and watch the film and love it. That doesn't often happen though. But it's cool when it does.

But personall, there are some films, I think can never be turned into films.

Bi Ryu
07-25-2006, 06:15 PM
I voted books, the reason is you have more time to develop characters in a book (book - Several Days; movie 1-2 hours, approx.)

also, you have more freedom to interpret various scenes in a book.

Guy

Movies suck. They always ruin the originality of the book. Examples are Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and any classical books later turned into movies.

I prefer books to movies as I prefer manga to anime. The reason is quite simple books are more complex, the storyline is more detailed .

I guess both are ok but I prefer books. Books broaden and encourage imagination and lets you paint up your own scene and settings. However, movies are limit imagination and it's more based on the 'what you see is what you get' theory.
Movies are based on one person's imagination and creativity and you're just 'watching' his/her's version of the story. Reading books gives you a wider outlook on the story and allows you to create your own environment.

Ok now I better stop blabbing...

Movie all the way. If you watch movie you can actually see the blood and stuff and like STAR WARS you can see the swing of the arms. On the book it just says he deflected it. That not cool. Actually see the deflection is cool

I like them both. I love to compare the movie to the book to see which one is better like The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Loin The Witch and The Wardrobe.

It really depends. Sometimes the book gives more depth and detail, but most of the time I prefer watching the movie.

books - because with movies you can't really potray how the char thinks and feels in certain situations as much
except with LOTR, i liked the movie better.

I think that both are as good as each other. Some films that are based on books are just absolute B.S. except for The Lord Of The Rings :redbiggri but some films that have their own unique storyline turn out to be pretty good.

Books are almost always better because it's your own imagination when you immerse yourself into the story, not some guy who's paid to draw what he imagines. Movies also tend to change things to help make it fit into the ammount of time they have. I remember reading the book and watching movie Memoirs of a Geisha and the book was so much better. In the movie, they changed at least two of the important characters. They gave Nobu his arm back and changed a Japanese guy into some US military guy.
If possible, read the book before you watch the movie.

i choosed both. I loved reading storybooks where my imaginations would come alive ^^, and yeah, sometimes the movies spoil it. But movies have their own amazing effects and it there are just some awesome movies that are not written =D

i said both, because some books are better read than watching the movie. some movies leave out alot of stuff, and sometimes its the good parts they leave out. plus i do like to use my imagination, and i can get lost in a good book and that is very relaxing.

Books when I'm not feeling lazy and Movies when I'm feeling lazy.

However, I still think the books are better, because they're longer and much more descriptive. It also leaves a lot of room for imagination, unless it was a book adaptated from the movie (which is supposed to be a visual experience). Movies are only an hour or two long, so I think it's better if they're not based off anything.
