Hey there. My friend just sent me a rant he wrote which was the most funniest thing ive read on food. You won't get some of the restaurants/food places if you don't live in a South-East Asian country, particularly Singapore. You'll get the mackers and KFC I think :toocool:.
Mr.Ho's is the cafeteria in my school (Australian School Singapore) and Morton's is this restaurant at a 5-star hotel (which honestly, I think was good..at least for the 3 times I went there :P). Enjoy it for an interesting read.

Food rant

Right, its this simple, food from the following places, suck.

*McDonalds
*KFC
*Mr.Ho’s
*Morton’s steakhouse at the Oriental hotel.

Erm, yeah, that’s about it. Now, I will tell you why.
Lets start with McDonalds, once a place where you could get a burger, it has turn into a huge American franchise and business. I pose a question to you people that eat the ‘food’ from McDonalds: Are your taste buds and nose not working? Or are you so jaded with this type of food that you cannot live without it?

McDonalds, doesn’t even serve real food, the meat patties are disgusting, the buns are overly filled with sugar and the only thing that they did decent (their milkshakes) is now crap. Please, I’m begging you; if you crave fast food go eat at BK where the burgers there are decent enough to be called food. Yes, it might not be healthier, but considering the burgers are bigger, taste better and aren’t as nasty looking as McDonalds, its like, there’s should be no contest and there is!

You know what, here’s a list of the ingredients that go into a bun for their Big Mac®:
Big Mac® Bun:
Enriched bleached flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, reduced iron), water, high fructose corn syrup, sesame seeds, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, yeast, contains less than 2 % of each of the following: salt, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, wheat gluten, soy flour, baking soda, emulsifier (mono- and diglycerides, diacetyl tartaric acid esters of fatty acids, ethanol, sorbitol, polysorbate 20, potassium propionate), sodium stearoyl lactylate, dough conditioner (corn starch, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulfate, calcium peroxide, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, enzymes), calcium propionate (preservative). Contains wheat and soybean ingredients.
This was gotten off their website, and holy crap, calcium silicate? Ethanol? Tartaric acid esters of fatty acids? Ethanol? Bloody hell, its like a solution for freaking poison. That’s just gross.

This is the recipe for their nuggets:

Chicken McNuggets® Made with White Meat:
Boneless chicken breast, water, modified cornstarch, salt, chicken flavor (yeast extract, salt, wheat starch, natural flavoring (animal source), safflower oil, dextrose, citric acid, rosemary), sodium phosphates, seasoning (natural extractives of rosemary, canola and/or soybean oil, mono-and diglycerides, and lecithin). Battered and Breaded with: Water, enriched bleached wheat flour (flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), yellow corn flour, bleached wheat flour, modified corn starch, salt, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium aluminum phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, calcium lactate), spices, wheat starch, whey, corn starch. Breading set in vegetable oil. Cooked in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, (may contain partially hydrogenated soybean oil and/or partially hydrogenated corn oil and/or partially hydrogenated canola oil and/or cottonseed oil and/or sunflower oil and/or corn oil). Contains wheat, milk and soybean ingredients.

Again, that’s bloody gross.

Really, anyone that eats at McDonalds should be crucified.

Ok, moving, the next target of bad eating place is to be KFC. A place that was actually once decent, and then somehow, they just got crap. The stuff they serve there is some serious nasty stuff. The fried chicken is breaded until all your eating is a loaf of bread. The chicken is nearly non-exsistent and what is left is an oily goop that might not even be real chicken.
Oh yeah, remember those rumors about how KFC used other animals (skunk, mice and ferrets)? I don’t know if their real, but its better to believe them then to eat it. And yes, I do believe I can make fried chicken that taste a lot better.

Avoid KFC, its gross, avoid it like the plague.

Mr.Ho’s canteen, yes I do patronize them, but really, I don’t have much choice do I? Oh wait, yes I do, I can bring food from HOME. Please, please don’t give me this excuse on how I don’t have time to make food for school. The majority of us that study in AIS are going to have maids, like it or not, the reality is that your going to have to be fairly well off to study in a $22,000++ per year school.

If you think your such a sweet angel in saying that its extra work, don’t be lazy and make it yourself then. It’s easy, get two pieces of bread (not that white bread crap, PROPER bread), spread a bit of butter on both sides (to stop it from getting soggy), a slice or two of ham or whatever meat you desire, some lettuce and other vegetables and put it in a plastic bag. You know what? You could even add some mayonnaise!
Oh, you like hot food? Sure, no problem, bring your food in a tight seal container and heat it up in the microwaves that dot the staff rooms. I’m quite sure the staff members will be more then happy to let you use them. If they don’t, that’s what the SRC are for.

Really, PLEASE let Mr.Ho’s be your last resort in a place to which you need to get your food from. And a recommendation, avoid those chicken burgers of his that pops up every Friday, its laid with such and incredible amount of oil I wonder how I didn’t get a heart attack after trying my first one.
Another thing to avoid like cancer, his ‘gravy’ and chili chicken.
Let’s get this clear, gravy is the juices of what comes out during a cooking process, like when roasting a chicken or beef. PROPER gravy is made by using these juices and usually the addition of wine or water to deglaze it, and by then adding a mixture of flour and water to reduce and concentrate the flavour. To call it gravy is a sin to mankind and is false advertisement.
Everything else that isn’t gravy is called sauce.

Moving on, when I arrived six years ago to AIS, Mr.Ho’s was actually (WOW!) serving decent food at the old school. It wasn’t great, but it was a lot better. One of the things that were good was his chili chicken. A concoction in which pieces of chicken was cooked in a spicy sauce (note, the use of sauce and not gravy). For some unknown reason, when he moved over to this new campus, the sauce got incredibly sweetened by about four times. So what am I eating? Chicken cooked in a sauce with chili and other ingredients, or chicken cooked in sugar colored with random things and chili? I think it’s the latter.

Finally, (and this last one pains me) Morton’s Steakhouse in the Oriental hotel sucks. Yeah, I’ve said it. As much as everyone says the steaks there are the best, you obviously have not eaten good steak. The only thing Morton is good for is if you wish to eat incredibly tough huge (BIG) steaks, see waiters juggle plates, watch a live presentation of their menu and pay huge ridiculous prices for food that can be cooked at home.

As I consider myself a foodie, (including my father and everyone in my family) we decided to try it. We go in, it’s nice, sit down, not so nice, tight seating with music playing a bit too loudly. The live menu presentation comes, it’s annoying and I wish to slap the waitress, but one must remain polite in such a place.

We look at the menu. ‘Whoa I said’, a prawn cocktail for $35? Holy crap. But you know what, nothing was under $20, so what the hell, I order one. We get a fillet Mignon, a New York Porterhouse cut (their specialty), and a Sirloin. We also get a lamb, because my mom doesn’t eat beef.
Prawn cocktail comes with another ordered crab cakes. Prawns are fresh, but something that I’m paying for $35 is a bit much. The crab cakes are above average, but I reckon I can make them better.

The beef comes, wow, do they look good. I cut into mine, I ordered medium rare (anything above this is a waste, so don’t even go there), blood oozes out and the inside is pink, “excellent” I say, this should be good. I cut into it, and immediately I meet a huge resistant to the meat. After more effort then it should take, I take a bite. I chew, and I chew. Wow, its tough…
I soon find out why. They were using Australian beef. Great…

Oh yeah, Australian beef is good, but hell, compared to what we can import from the South Americans or the Japanese, the stuff is crap. I was really hoping to eat some finely aged marbled steak, but instead I get steak that is just old and tough.

Great way to take our money, total damage to the wallet? $500 for the four of us. Yep, for the price of three steaks, one lamb, a prawn cocktail and a crab cake, they charged us that incredible amount.

I wish we could have eaten at a hawker centre, paying $4 for a big plate of Char Kway Teo and being satisfied by it.

I love food, and god I hate it when people like the mentioned above screw it over.

One more thing, I want to complain about how you guys are such a bunch of whiners when it comes to eating food you have yet to try, especially things like liver. Stop whining and try the damn thing, if you don’t like it fine, but if you never try, you will never know how much you are missing. Please, try new things and get out of this cycle where you just eat the same thing over and over again. If not, I’ll just think of you as arrogant and ignorant.
If you think the idea is disgusting, then you should also be crucified. You know the ocean where you eat your fish? Guess what happens in it?
Yeah, fish and animals crap in it too. This is a blunt statement but that’s how it has to be said. You think vegetables are clean? Please, what do you think its growing in?! It’s dirt! What do you think helps it grow? Fertilizer, either wise known as sh**.

So you think your food is clean? Guess what, it never is and never will be. So go that extra step further, try a piece of liver, try some of that curry you always thought would taste gross (you might like it), try eating new combinations (Prata + curry + sugar = a whole lot of yum) and please, finally, don’t eat McDonalds, KFC or waste your money at Morton’s.

i was just writing this for my multiply and i thought it was fun to post it here..so...

Thought for FOOD

I’m downright bloated now.
As a fan of food, I just felt it was fun writing about some local ‘stuff-for-the-stomach’ now. Just the usual ones. I can’t think up of any special food for now.
Let’s start off with drinks.

The ever famous Teh-tarik, ‘teh’ here means tea and ‘tarik’ means pull in malay. Why pull? you must have wondered. This is because they do indeed ‘pull’ the tea while preparing it. The tea is first prepared using red tea and adding condense milk or evaporated milk with sugar. Then by pouring it from one cup to the other, they ‘pull’ it.
I don’t really think this originated from here but since it’s a popular drink here so…Here’s a picture to show how they ‘pull’ tea.

[picture of man teh tarik-ing]
http://www.makantime.com/images/hawker/tehtarik.jpg
The reason for it? Simple. So it’s more delicious. It wouldn’t be too hot for the customers to drink, the tea would be mixed thoroughly, and the bubble foam that formed on top makes it seems like cappuccino shake or something like that. So cheers for ‘teh tarik’.

On top of that, we have the normal Kopi, Kopi-O, Teh, The-O, Milo ais, Nescafe and limau ais (lemon ais drink), a mixture of Teh-O ais limau (ice lemon tea) or Neslo (Nescafe and milo) and other creative creations.
Not to forget all the sayo-bean drink, sugar-cane drink, fruits drinks (which they use real fruits to blend and squeeze but add lotsa sugar water too) and last but not least Coconut drink. I love drinking the cool drink right from the coconut and eat those peel-off flesh. http://www.amazingbarkingspider.com/travel/pictures/malaysia/Langkawi/203-Coconut%20Drink%201.jpg
Plenty of other drinks that I can’t remember for now.

Come the FOOD part.

I love spicy food. But I’m not that great at eating spicy stuff. *thinks of daddy* My Dad, born in Melaka, the main source of ‘rempah-ratus’ and spices would naturally have the knack of eating real spicy food. While my mom and I was burning our tongues off, my dad would say it’s not ‘qi gek’ (exciting? I’m not sure how to translate this but know that it’s not spicy) enough. The oh-so famous chilli padi is the worse I’ve encounter. It totally numbs your whole tongue till you can’t feel anything. Well, for me anyway. I prefer spicy stuff with the spicy taste. I didn’t know how to eat spicy stuff till I grew older (I’m not sure if it’s something I should regret or not). I remember eating ‘asam laksa’ till tears would roll down my eyes, it was really embarrassing as I was eating in front of everybody.

So here’s Penang ‘asam laksa’ for you.

[pic of asam laksa]
I’m clearly not sure how they make it, but there’s ‘asam’ so it’s a bit sour. There noodle and the asam soup. It’s best when there’s lots of stuff and spices in there, namely sliced up cucumber, pineapple, onion, mint leaves, sardine fish and others. This is for the Pro to describe. Anybody’s mom here knows how to make asam laksa?

Tom Yam Bihun from Thailand.
It’s the best! I totally love it. Even Maggi mee have tomyam flavour.
I just so love the taste. The heavenly smell. But I’m so not sure what it is made from. Only those visible ones like prawn, carrot, tomato, mushroom, and the bihun noodle of course. Its even better if it is TomYam Seafood. Thanks to my cousin who teach us how to eat it during our camping trip in Pangkor.

Next, Oo Jian.
Speaking of Pangkor reminds me of this food. Remember to order it whenever you go to a seafood restaurant. Fried crispy omelette with oysters in it makes me drool.

I can’t believe I actually found a picture of this. O.o

ROTI CANAI
It’s Cheap. What do you expect? It cost less than one dollar okay.
Not only that, there have so many other additions you can stuff in. Roti Telur, Roti Planta, Roti Tisu, Roti Sardin, Roti… the list goes on.
This Indian food goes best with Kari! Though some would like dall (spelling?) better. I like the *points* SS14 kari ikan most.

[pic of roti canai]

Hah. This reminds me of Nasi Kunyit with Kari Ayam.
Remember the yellow sticky rice and the lovely rendang meat? Yeah, our cantin’s one is not too bad, but sometimes you can find nicer ones outside.
I’m sorry but I can’t find a suitable pic for this.
There’s so many other food that I can’t remember right now. But now then, I must as all of you others to write bout food too. The variety of food is pretty limitless.

Wait, I forgotten bout desserts.

ABC aka Ice Kacang and Cendol
Usj 1 Giant use to have an ice kacang seller there. I don’t like the pink syrup. I usually request mine with the black sugar only with lots of different stuff inside. We have jagung, red beans, cashew nuts, jelly, cincau, atap seed, milk, gula melaka (black sugar) and the ice, suitable for the hot weather here in Malaysia. Cendol! My mom love I but she can’t eat too much because it’s mainly made up of the sweet coconut milk with high cholesterol. And the green cendol thing is of course a must to be called a cendol.
It’s almost the same as ice kacang sometimes.

http://www.ximnet.com.my/thelab/images/upload/cendol.jpg
[pic of ice-kacang and cendol]

I would say that’s all for now.
Forgive me for this sudden crazy impulse to write about food.
Something is not right with my brain today.
I like eating.
But I do try to control the amount I eat.
[note: all pictures are googled and I have no right over them. Anybody who wish to claim ownership have a right to do so. Just tell me and I’ll remove them or put your name there]
