does any one here take n e martial arts?... and if so, which one(s)?
i take tae kwon do and tai chi right now... i want to get into judo or something else later on though ^_^
.... so how about everyone else?
I did take a bit of kung fu when I was 10 years old. Never made it past yellow belt since I took up swimming instead. I hear rumors that martial arts slows down height growth. No thanks. And is tai chi a martial arts?

Martial Art - Any of several Asian arts of combat or self-defense, such as aikido, karate, judo, or tae kwon do, usually practiced as sport.
(from answer.com)
yeh, kendo certainly sounds like a martial art!
i did hapkido before in 6th grade and did some Wushu at my sister's class a few times. Then my Hapkido master got in a car accident and things sorta went downhill after that....
nowadays i just practice the Art of "Angrily Shaking Fist" and
"Running Away-Do."

These are *external* martial arts, but there are also *internal* ones that seek mastery upon the inner flow, Chi (Ki), to improve health, focus, and various abilities.
-> Qi Gong, Tai Chi Chuan, Wing Chun, Bagua Zhang.
Most internal martial arts are Chinese though.
I have done many years of Wu Shu golden belt right now (I am about black belt level)
Have done Karate for a few years. I did Karate only to fight with many people. Did not care about belt.

I'm doing Haedong Kumdo now at 19, it's martail arts/ street fighting with swords, really cool! I haven't graded yet, next week though I do, but it's fairly simple and strengthens your arms very well and it's fun.

THanx for the advice... its something i also fear, doing anything that is really HArdcore or Xtreme... there is a factor of danger, but WHAT THE HELL... is the reaction of many people... i usually analyze it. Many friends of mine had serious injuries during fights, as well as some of my friends who have broken many bones of others...
One friend did a side kick (mawashigiri - or something like that) and kicked a guys ribs broken... they rushed him to hospital... but my friend got disqualified.
Its a hardcore world out there... Martial Arts makes you prepared!
Yeah, some times it's dangerous. I doing Wu-Shu it's a Jet Li style of fighting.
I broke both of my arms, two of my ribs and rip mussels in my left leg.

If you want to suffer less in martial art training, try Tai Chi Fist or Tai-Chi Sword..
It emphaise on the repelling of hard attack using soft approach. I am pretty good at it. It helps keeping yourself fit. The attacks are as demotion as other martial arts.

Kinda, I started traing from about 8 yrs old in basic shaolin long fist forms with my dad. So martial arts was a part of my upbringing rather than just a sport or a hobby. I was never aware I was doing anything different from anyone else until I was much older.

So yeah I just got the ok from my superiors and me and some of the other guys are going to begin training in krav maga. for those of you that dont know krav maga is the no nonsense israeli martial arts. Supposedly expertise in it only takes 4 months for the hand to hand combat where as other martial arts may take you a year or two. I know because I practice Judo, Jiu Jitzu, boxing and muay thai. I was looking at it and the knife fighting and shooting skills and all the training is insane. I cant wait to take it because its more effective in real life situations then muay thai boxing and the other stuff I take because most of that stuff is tailored around fighting one opponents this krav maga stuff is desighned to fight multiple apponents under worse case scenarios.

Tae Kwon Do: Yellow Belt (Yes, I mean it)
I stopped taking Tae Kwon Do when I moved, so I pretty much ceased to do any more martial arts after that. I was decent, but I was really limited in terms of kicking, but I still managed to kick a wood plank in half. Once during sparing, they paired me up with a black belt (I thought~ Oh crap, I'm screwed) and I tried my best, hitting as hard as I could. I don't take any martial arts, but I do a little bit of boxing at home with my dad since I'm better using my fists. For some reason now, I can do kicks a little better.

i do taekwondo and hapkido, both korean martial arts. been doing taekwondo for like 8 years now i think, right now i just teach and dont do much training so i get a bit lazy and sloppy sometimes hahaha.
but if anybody gets their first black belt in 2 or 3 years, they are probably really crappy ones who dont deserve the title. i mean anybody can pay for gradings and get a belt at the end of it, but not everybody holds the skill befitting of their rank.
it took me a long 6 years before i got my black belt in taekwondo, and im proud to wear it since i trained hard to get where i am. in short, it took me 6 years of being the instructor's whipping boy to be called "assistant instructor".
but i reckon martial arts isnt just about learning to defend yourself or to be able to brag about, but its more a philosophical thing, it helps shape who you are. just my 2 cents

So what's Krag Maga anyway?
its this no nonsense form of fighting that is taught in the military and alot of special forces use it. the reason behind it is that you can become proficient in it in like 4 months and theres no sport application to it like other martial arts. Its a str8 combat martial art.

I think I know that I might not be able to find the martial arts insitute that I was part of for a good 5 years, I might have to give up martial arts, and decided to do kickboxing. I will still practice martial arts, at least practice what I still know of it with the help of the book and most likely work with the weapons I bought as well. Staff is my favorite weapon of choice, it's so badass looking when you know how to use it. :)

What are all your guys favourite techniques? Or moves you would call them. So far my favourite are the armbar(Lolz) and the Leg Triangle Choke. They are both quick and easy.
MasterWordSmith

You cant just grab armbars on decent players, it has to be much more forceful and controled. However on an amature, I can get away with just about anything I want.
In terms of techniques I like sangakyu, chokes em good.
not much traditional?
hmm? I style goju shorei ryu karate-do. Otherwise known as tradidtional karate, with heavy influence on kata and practical application.

Tae Kwon Do for 9 or 10 years, I got my 2nd black.
Hapkido for a year or so was intermixed with that.
Blue in Shaolin Kung Fu.
3 Years of sparse Kumdo training.
Yellow in Brazillian Jiujitsu/Combative Wrestling.
Yellow in Karate.
Those last ones aren't so impressive or long lasting, I just took them to help round me out abit, especially the Jiujitsu which was dramatically helpful. I'd like to take muay thai, savate, or western boxing some time though, simply because they have really good practical application in alot of areas.
This thread really doesn't seem like it has much of a point. Just created to make yourself sound cool.
Aren't most threads that are like "HEY WHATS UR FAVORITE ______" like that kinda? I used to be in Karate. I stayed there for a year then decided it wasnt for me. My brother is a Black Belt though.
I have been in Karate, Wu Shu Kung-Fu, Tai Chi, and now Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. I am a beginner in all of them due to moving, but the Bujinkan I hope to get quite proficient at. I have my own fighting style so I find it a bit hard to learn new things cause my reflexes always tell me to beat the heck out of the guy attacking me, even when we are learning new throws. I have never actually faught anyone which is a good thing since the last guy that pissed me off landed up almost being driven head first into the ground in a pile driver style (I love wrestling). Luckily I had the good mind to stop because he was actually a friend.
I just have to know if anyone else has noticed this. I find that in Dojo's run by Europeans, some of them dont really do it the way it used to be done in Japan. My last two teachers were good at what they did, its just that they seem to lack the proper way that things should be done. I am a very old minded person, so I was just wondering :P

Well our Dojo (and every other I've been) all do it nicely to the ''rules'' throws and training are well tought and given. But however here Discipline isn't as scrict as in Japan, in Japan they are much more driven and ambitious (no wonder why actually the best in every martial Art sport usually are Jappanese people).
But I like it the way how I am tought for I do not want to be the best there is in Judo I just want to have fun, wich I believe is something that Sometimes is forgotten (But I could just as well be completely mistaken)
Iaido : 4th Kyu
Jodo : -none yet-
I tried so many other styles (mostly karate and TaeKwon Do) but I always changed clubs right before the grading ceremonies because I didn't feel the instructurs were serious enough about it.

My martial art history..
Karate - introductory course, so I don't really count it
Tae Kwon Do - 1 year, got up to a green belt blue stripe
Kung Fu - 1.5 years, got up to an orange belt....and by far kung fu was my favourite! I learned more as a white belt in kung fu than I did in almost all my tae kwon do training....thats also though because I was part of the "Kung Fu Club" where they taught a lot of advanced stuff...
But I'm thinking of taking kung fu again late december, I miss it...

i've practiced judo for 3 years and won a couple national championships along with other dojo tournaments. anyway, just to say that i was a promising judo fighter. (i got to the blue belt).
but i quit a few years ago because i was in a real fight and i wasn't able to use my judo technique (for those who don't know judo, it's mostly grabbing techniques).
the thing is that judo doesn't really help you in a fight, because during practice your opponent isn't throwing punches and quicks at you. He's just trying to grip you and immobolize you.
so anyway, i got my ass kicked that day and decided it would never happen again.
so now, i'm learning karate and tae kwondo.
though i like karate better because it includes punches.

Conversely, if you had been able to grapple him, you could have ended that fight really quickly.
Judo and Aikido are all about redirecting an opponent's force away from you, or at the very least, putting them in a position (via grapples and holds) where they cannot punch, kick, or retaliate.
Anyway, just out of curiousity, what'd you do to end up in that situation in the first place?

I quit this summer cause I moved to somewhere else in my country. And as I am quite lazy I havnt started on something like that, yet.
Actually I was traning karate mostly because I had lots of friends there that I didnt have the time to meet other days in the week.. :face82:
I got to orange belt in Tae Kwon Do... Unfortunely I could only do it during the summers at my grandparents because there are no places here where I live that teach true Tae Kwon Do, they're all those mixture of different martial arts places =P We did find one that was really close but WAY too far to drive to, would have to go through traffic hell and it wasn't worth it.
I'd like to pick it back up if I could (I still remember the moves, id just have to re-learn all of the forms XD)
I'm really interested in Caeporia, but I doubt theres any place here that teaches it =P Now THAT is an awsome fighting style XD

just wanted to share and brag a bit ^^.
To all you that say Judo is stupid because it doesnt help you in a street fight, i say you are stupid because you get caught in a street fight.Judo is a sport, and by the way we that have some side ju-jitsu training can defend ourselves really well (braking arms, suffocating etc)
But i never got caught in a real fight cause im mostly a peaceful guy, but like on judo trainings and competitions i love to fight cause its for the good sport and laughs..i really cant understand people who cry when they lose a match in any martial arts, i just pat them and say better luck next time buddy :D.I love fighting (sport-like) and competitivness, so thats why im training judo..but as i said i might start to train kendo.

I studied Karate, mainly... 2 different styles, Goju-Shorin (Green belt), and Shotokan (still a beginner). I want to get back into it, though... but I'm wanting to learn some close-quarters techniques.
It's my understanding that Hapkido is ideal for that. Like Akido is good for large movements and redirecting of energy, Hapkido focuses on small movements to redirect attacks. But maybe I was mistaken...

And a seperate instructor is certified in katana. Our grandmaster came and gave us a short instruction on escrima stick fighting today, interasting to say the least. sirhchris, if you really want to fight you should consider boxing, kickboxing, Muay thai or MMA. I defineatly understand why you got bored. Kinda boring to train if you never get to test your skills, if you never really get to fight with full contact rules.

Tae Kwon Do: 1st Degree Black Belt...
Took me 8 years to get it and I'm damn proud of it!
This weekend I,m heading home, and sparring the hell out of my friend (He's a 2nd Degree)... It should prove interesting... lol
Urm, the first belt in both judo and taekwondo, a while ago. Their pretty useless though, if i ever get into fights i use my own special style of "Fight dirteh."

I'm also a third degree black in tae kwon do but it's only help me in a knife attack from a group of prevs looking for a person to bang. then the muay thai kicked in and I got away safely with only a cut and a few bruises

I was a Brown senior in Hapkido, but I had to quit because my family moved. I miss training.
Tae-Kwon-Do ; Red ; I was in it for about three years, and then we moved, i haven't been able to do it for about six years, but i would love to start another martial art. The thing that sucks is that nowhere around us is a traditional place. I remember in our classes we would have to speak Korean and learn all of the formals, which i enjoyed, but things are just so unformal these days. Besides, i can only remember how to count in Korean, but yeah, now i'm just rambling so i'm gonna stop now

I said most of this in another thread, but I'll just cut some of the explaining out.
I have been training in Kung Fu/Tai Chi Chuan/Shaolin for about 12 years.
My teacher is Master Huang who grew up at a temple in China, and at 18 decided to leave and pursue his life instead of becoming a Monk. To make a long story short he came to America 12 years ago, and due to a chain of events decided to teach me. He has been my Master for 11 years now. I have for about a year now been training in more advanced Shaolin Kung Fu, and I also do iron body training regularly. Do to the speed, control, and focused strength in attacks I find the combination extremely effective. I have fought a lot of fights against a lot of different styles and have not been defeated. I used to go to martial arts classes just a couple times a week, just so I could participate in matches, but I haven’t in 2 years because it’s just not a challenge. I believe this is because of the training I do compared to martial arts classes. Master Huang trains me the way he was trained at his temple, and although it is extremely effective, it would probably be considered abuse lol.
Anyway this combination is the best I have seen, I have gone to a gym and challenged a MMA fighter (the guy was a arrogant ass and truly believed MMA was superior do to brute strength, so I decided to enlighten him), and lets just say it was a short fight, I took out his legs and delivered a focused attack to his chest, which left him on the ground with the wind knocked out of him. I fought 2 more MMA guys at the gym because they challenged me, they said they were better then the first guy, and that I got lucky. So needless to say the last two fights weren’t any different time wise. The second guy I dealt with pretty much the same way as the first, but the third guy I knocked out with one attack, I jumped and did a round house which left him out for a few seconds. I also didn’t want to hurt them badly, I pretty much just wanted to put them in their place, because they live in the same area and were basically thugs that enjoyed beating up on weaker people ,so I held back a lot on my attacks. If I had wanted to hurt them I could of easily used a much stronger focused attack, and shattered some of their ribs, or worse. There are a lot of attacks in the styles I train in that can be used to kill your opponent in a matter of seconds, but of course these are attacks that are never to be used in a normal fight.
Anyway as far ranks or belts go, Master Huang says that belts are just a way to try and make students determined, and rank wise... Well I know I could sweep the floor with the head instructor at the Kung Fu class I used to attend and now teach at, and I could probably do the same with the other Martial Arts instructors in the area. I was recently offered a possission on a competitive martial arts team, as their Kung Fu/Tai Chi Chuan spot, but I turned it down, because I would have to travel a lot, and I wouldn't see much of my g/f (at the time), also a few days after the offer I proposed to my g/f and we are engaged.

belts are just made to have around your waist ^^ however i still think belts is a good way too show on wich skill level u are on (and by that I don't mean in fighting only)...

The school I go to is officialy a Tae Kwon Do school, it is branch of Martial Arts World (with Grandmaster Y.K. Kim), but my Chief Instructor teaches a lot of other styles in with the Tae Kwon do. So he would bring in something from mui tai when teaching sparring, kung fu with forms, and everything else. So I guess it would be a mixed martial arts.
1st degree, I have had it for many years while remaining active, I just choose not to test. I have been told that my skill as at the lvl of a high 3rd dan maybe 4th dan.
I just recently competed in the US Open and took 5th in continues sparring and 5th in forms (over 50 other competitors in my division).
