Well it seems that he was exiled because of selling illegal stuff like drugs, coccaine and just a rumor that he owned an underground erotic shop near 79th alley and when the shinigamis busted him he had to run, as we can see in the anime-manga he owns a new shop at the human world which is just a cover for his illegal stuff, I heard that he's in entertainment business now.

yeah, he does appear to be a particularly suspicious character with regards to his secretive shop......what about his cat though? Is his cat just....a talking cat, or is it a friend of Urahara of whom is capable of transforming into different animals...hmm
