Ok, after the massive inpour of people who know people in real life showing up in the BP comments page, i thought it would be kind of cool to see how many other people could possibly be from the same school, town, neighborhood and so on. this is optional, and if you want to go in depth with someone that might be near you, PM them so you dont become a thread jacker. this is a basically a rundown of the L in "A/S/L" so say what you feel is necessary.
Example: (me)
im in socal, San Diego to be exact. i found out there are a couple ppl near me, but they got off before i could ask more.

The funny thing is you really don't need to speak Japanese to live in Japan. Especialy if you live in a big city (Which I don't). All major highway signs are in both Japanese and Romaji (Roman characters like in english). If you go to the store just pick up what you want and goto the counter, look at the register for your total, and give it to the cashier. Simple. If ordering food just point and say "Kudasai". Almost all resturantes have wax models of thier food trays at the entrance or have picture menues. Plus resturantes in major cities often have enlish menues. Even most train stations have the station name in both Japanese and Romaji. And of course English is taught in high school and college.
You could actualy live here and never speak one word of Japanese if you wanted to. Of course knowing the language even just a little goes a long way. I recomend at least being able to read Hiragana before moving. It's easyer than it sounds, I taught myself in 3 days with a Hiragana translator sheet I tore out of a dictionary and Bleach graphic novel Volume#1, 2, & 3. One a day. By the end of the 3rd I could read Hiragana. Seriously it works.
It was the same in Thailand. Except I couldn't speak Thai worth a damn.
Darren337
04-16-2005, 09:39 PM
whether or not i ever end up in japan, i do want to learn to read/write/speak japanese. hiragana sounds like a good start, i'll have to get to studying that this summer when i have more free time. im using my free time to post in here, so no hate.

Living in Japan would be awsome.
I really want to move to Hokkaido (I hate large cities, I get panicky in crowds). But it's good to know that you really don't need to speak the language fluently to live there, since I'm so dumb and everything.
What about recidency in Japan? Is that hard to get.
Actually, I wouldn't mind moving to Singapore, France, Italy or Scotland either, just as long as I leave the US. ^^;; But Japan is top.

If anyone is looking for a way to live in Japan for 1-4 years with expenses paid look into being an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher). There are many private companies as well as a program sponsored by the Japanese government called JET for this. No Japanese Language skills required, but encouraged. Usualy the only requirements to be an ALT is a 4 year degree of your choice and English as your 1st language. Basicaly you are a teacher's assistant in the Japanese school system. I'm not an ALT. I'm a Kyukyu Kyumeishi (Paramedic), but I have several friends that are ALTs and they enjoy it. Most companies have a 1 year contract that can be renewed for 4 years if you really like it.
Just throwing out an option since allot of people want to see what it's like to call Japan "Home". By the way avoid Aomori. Nothing, but farms up here. The Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka triangle has so much more to offer. Not to mention better weather. Love Tokyo.

The Japanese medical standard for field medice is ALLOT lower than the US. I work for the Federal Government which is why I'm over here. My US qualifications are above the Japanese standard so the Government managed to waive any Japanese certifications. It's hard to just come to Japan and start to work in medicine because you would need to be totaly fluent in the Japanese language. Medicine is no joke. 99.9% of your patients will be Japanese. I recomend coming via an ALT (since no teaching certifications or Japanese language skills are neccisary), take the Japanese medical certifications on your spare time (while you're already getting a paycheck), and then work out a deal with a local ambulance service near the end of your teaching contract (Preferably where there is a chance that you will encounter foreign patients other wise they might not hire you). Remember certifications mean you paying money. You will want stable income while aquiring them.
Also most Japanese employers require you to already live in Japan before you will even be considered for an interview. With the exception of being an ALT(Recomended). You have to sell your soul to do it the way I did (Not Recomended).
Oh and getting Japanese Residency is virtualy impossible. Don't even bother trying. As long as you have a Work Visa and a Gaijin Card (Alien Resident Card) you're good to go.
PS: Signipore Rocks! for whoever said they might go there.

settled? I don't believe that word was ever allowed to exist in my dictionary~ >.<Yea I used to hate moving around (I went to 3 different HS-->this was when I hated my parents the most) but now i'm happy being in the states for college. I don't know if i want to settle here after college, I don't really want to go to grad school I want to work first... who knows~

Darren337

horses... *sigh* the only way you can have that on the coast is to have land (which will cost you your soul) or just count the ones in your car as your horses (its what i do, sigh). but we have our advantages too. anime/manga is reaily available, japanese imported goods are in quick supply, and we have some beautiful winding coastal road.

I live in Northern New Jersey, about as far north as you can get. It's the suburbs, but from a lot of places you can see NYC since it's only about ten miles away. I've lived in a lot of places all around the US but I think the Tristate area is the best because there's so much to do. I'm within driving distance of NYC, Baltimore, DC, Philidelphia, and Boston. I lived in Minnesota before and that wasn't too fun... x_X
