THE WOMAN BEHIND THE AVATAR

For today's issue, we interviewed one of our most beloved staff of Club Bleach. You all know him as DragonBlade, the hard working administrator of these forums. However, who is DragonBlade? To us, he's simply just a username that we associate with a current avatar (which is usually of a girl). But we know behind all of our usernames and avatars that there is a real person sitting at a computer with a real life to deal with. That is what our reporter, Nichigosan, went to find out. Here is an interview that he conducted with this man of mystery:

CBNL: Now, we all know you as DragonBlade on CB...but somewhere in the forums (i still haven't found it), you personally stated that ur real name was Chris, correct?
DB: Yeah. I hope this once and for all ends my gender confusion. (grin)
CBNL: How old are you?
DB: 19
CBNL: So Chris, where do u currently reside?
DB: California
CBNL: How long have you lived at your current residence?
DB: My whole life. I did move once, but within the same city.
CBNL: Cool. How do you like where you're living, and is there any other place you'd want to live in?
DB: Well, it's all right. Snow doesn't exist here, but summer is probably the worse since it's too hot. As to living somewhere else, I don't know.
CBNL: So what do you like to do for fun?
DB: Chatting, anime of course, gaming, making sigs, and hanging out with friends.
CBNL: Are you into any sports or recreational-type activities?
DB: Not really. I would probably die because of the heat! I like indoor sports more. Volleyball would probably be my favorite sport. I'm terrible at tennis. I'm also terrible at basketball...it has been years since i last played hehe. College doesn't really let you play unless you want a bad grade.
CBNL: Understandable. How about instruments? Do you play one, or have you played on in the past?
DB: Nope. I do have a piano, but i don't play it.
CBNL: Have you ever wanted to play an instrument?
DB: hmmm....probably. But not right now. I'm lazier than ever!
CBNL: haha. Do you have any brothers and sisters? If so, how man, and how old?
DB: I have on sister and I think she is 17.
CBNL: Are you guys close?
DB: We're like friends. We are family of course. I look after her.
CBNL: What school do you go to?
DB: Currently Irvine Valley College. No clue where I'm going to transfer.
CBNL: What are you majoring in?
DB: Computer Engineering.
CBNL: Cool! What do you want to do with your major?
DB: Design chips i guess.
CBNL: When do you expect to graduate?
DB: Probably 2008-2009.
CBNL: Do you have a girlfriend?
DB: Nope
CBNL: Are you currently looking or interested in a girl, or are you just kicking back for now?
DB: Hehe I'm just kicking back. My college is not that interesting. It's not that big - very crappy clubs. But it's diverse.
CBNL: Have you ever had a girlfriend?
DB: Not really. I failed at many attempts because I had to transfer schools so many times. I think I went to five different schools before college, both public and private.
CBNL: Wow that's a bummer. What is your most embarrassing momen involving a birl?
DB:rofl! Um...I'm lazy to think on this one. There have probably been many events. They mostly happened years ago though, so I can't remember.
CBNL: Are you religious?
DB: Nont really, I just go to church every week. That's about it. I used to be involved in a youth group, but no anymore.
CBNL: What's your denomination?
DB: Catholic
CBNL: Can you give us your opinion on your standing as far as religion in general?
DB: I don't really have one. I dont' really pay attention to it.
CBNL: Understandable. Now, do you have a job?
DB: Yes. I currently work at Albertsons as a bagger. I could be a cashier, but I'm too lazy to move up. I like my job...it's nice and easy. I only get paid $7.00/hr, but it's ok since i don't have to do much.
CBNL: Sounds interesting. In closing, do you have any aspiriations, future plans, or expectations that you'd like to share with us?
DB: Not really because I don't have anything planned for the future. I do hope to graduate and I don't drop out of college.
CBNL: Hehe, sounds good. Just worrying about what's going on in the present for now. Thanks alot for your time DB. We hope to find out more about you as we continue to work together with you at making CB a better place.
DB: Thanks.

And there you have it folks! That is the real DragonBlade, or should I say Chris, behind the avatar! Our reporter tried relentlessly to get him to give us a photograph of himself to post along with this article, but he was adamant about keeping his identity a secret. However, our reporter figured that since he worked at Albertsons that he could track DragonBlade down. Our reporter proceeded to canvas the Albertson's in Irvine and asking if a Chris worked there. He only found three Albertsons that had a bagger named Chris working there. The first one was an older man, so our reporter was able to rule him out. The second one was actually a girl, so we were fairly sure that wasn't the one. However, at the third Albertsons, our reporter finally found the REAL Chris. The manager introduced him to DragonBlade while DB was on the job. Unfortunately, when DB found out who our reporter was and noticed a camera in my hand, he immediately took off running. This is all our reporter managed to get:

Ah well. I guess CB will never know what DragonBlade really looks like. Oh well. We still love him!

A Brief History of Club Bleach

Club Bleach is a subsidiary of the Bleach Fan site, Bleach Portal. Started at the same time of its parent site, Club Bleach was actually a slow success. Although starting around the same time as Bleach Forums its closest rival, Club Bleach due to its less obvious name took a lot longer for people to embrace. Club Bleach was named as a fan club would be, Bleach Club, but when this seemingly childish name didn’t attract the attention of more mature adults, it was changed to Club Bleach.

When Club Bleach first started, it was small--really small--and it took a long time to develop by those loyal members who came and actually stayed, doing their best to make the place better. Due to Bleach Portal being a miniscule site at the time, Club Bleach didn’t even have any advertisement, not from its parent site to help him grow. Due to a low budget, it had to grow through word of mouth and few advertisements in order to grow in popularity.

Originally started as a dingy phpBB forum, Club Bleach evolved to a pirated version of vBulliten. This piracy, however, caused some legal issues that were only solved with the acquisition of an official liscense, which also enabled the forum to grow into what you see today.

Although at times forgotten by its creators, Club Bleach continued to grow and prosper. It recently gained two new Administrators, Darren337 and DragonBlade, which helped Club Bleach with the day-to-day administration it sorely needed for quite a while. With the dedication of these new Admins, the returning interest of some of the old Admins, and the increasing number of members, Club Bleach has grown strong over the past few months. With the implementation of projects like the Gotei 13, the Espadas, the CLub Bleach Role-Playing, and more, as well as with the soon-to-be-airing Bleach dub on [adult swim], Club Bleach has much promise showing for it in the future.

Bleach Portal Version 5 announced!

Bleach Portal, our parent site, is undergoing re-construction very soon! Bleach Portal version five will include many new features. Most of these features, as told by Unholy our coding Admin, are "secret," but one feature has already been implemented. The Bleach Portal Fanart section, where our resident GFXers can go and submit their original artwork for view and commenting.

"[The old Fanart section] was ugly, unfunctional, and broken," says Unholy. "The old one sucked..." It took Unholy two days to implement the new fanart section, with a little beta testing and suggestions from those of us at Club Bleach.

The Fanart section is not the only one recieving attention. The Comments for Bleach Portal news have also been overdue for some re-work. "I'm contemplating killing it due to excessive spam, however if it is kept, I did have ideas for secret additions," writes Unholy. "I'm not really proud of any of the current features because its so bad compared to what I can do now "

This idea may recieve some favourable attention for those at Club Bleach have been hoping for a merging of the two communities. "A forum section would serve the purposes of BleachPortal much better than the comments system if only due to ease of use," Maximoose, 12th Division Captain writes. The arguement about possibly joining the two sites is not very popular with Unholy, mainly because the VBulletin system gets much more attention from the VBulliten proffessionals than he could give a forum system of his own.

This possible merging, though, may be made easier by the Bleach Portal Version 5 re-write. Unholy writes, when asked about the suspected rise in members due to the [adult swim] airing of the Bleach dub starting September 9th, "well being currently number 1 when searched for Bleach, Bleach Anime, Bleach Manga, Bleach Downloads or Bleach Episodes, we have foreseen a flux in members due to this and thus Version 5 has been scaled so that it should hopefully run perfectly under the new system. Version 5 will be a total rewrite of all of Bleach Portal the only thing we are saving pretty much is people Username and their Password, unfortunately everything else is being redesign."

Unholy reminds us, though, that NOTHING is certain. "Well... Planned at the moment there is nothing, but some sort of integration MIGHT be possible, sometime in the future" We'll see, in the [hopefully near] future. :3

Asshin: Yes, I go to Hong Kong International School.

CBNL: Obviously Bleach is one of your hobbies. How did you get into it?
Asshin: When i visit Taiwan during the summer, i always read my older cousin's mangas, and I was hooked on to bleach, reading from book 1-16 before realizing there was an anime.

CBNL: So you’re a manga fan hey? Which of the two do you prefer, the Bleach manga or anime?
Asshin: I like the manga better, because it's more interesting than the fillers :D

CBNL: Are there any other manga series that you enjoy?
Asshin: Conan, Crayon Shinshan, Deathnote... there's more but i don't really remember them at the moment

CBNL: Do you also watch the anime versions of these? If yes, what did you think? Do you still prefer the manga?
Asshin: I have watched the anime of Conan and Crayon Shinshan, and i still prefer the manga because i like it more

Asshin: I make basslines for my friend, who is a rapper, and also i hang out with my friends and do sports.

CBNL: Those basslines sound interesting… What all does it involve?
Asshin: It involves me pairing up with my friend and a random person just thinking of how the next song should go, my friend can say that he wants a more r&b feel and me and the other person will just analyze and then improvise till my friend likes it.

CBNL: Are you planning on taking this further? Or is it just for kicks?
Asshin: I do plan on taking this further, but i want to make a band with a few of my friends.

itsovernow
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y234/sarteck/suzuka2536la.jpg

CBNL: What country are you from?
itsovernow: England

CBNL: How old are you?
itsovernow: I’m 16

CBNL: What was your first Bleach encounter?
itsovernow: I was first saw Bleach on a friend’s laptop – episode 59 I think. I spent the next 2 weeks solidly downloading and watching it to get up to date.

CBNL: How many times have you watched Bleach?
itsovernow: I don’t think I’ve watched it all the way through more than once, although some episodes I’ve watched too many times to count =)

CBNL: Seeing as you’re so fond of certain episodes, care to share which ones?
itsovernow: I think all the more popular ones - 17, 39 and 51-59 are my personal favorites.

CBNL: How did you discover CB?
itsovernow: Through BleachPortal, where I download most of my Bleach

CBNL: How long have you been a member?
itsovernow: Since late November 2005

CBNL: Do you visit the site often?
itsovernow: At least once a day – more if I have time

CBNL: Do you have any particular Forum/Section that you are fond of? If yes, why?
itsovernow: Yep – the debates section. I’m pretty shy off forums, so I was never before able to debate, so I’m pretty grateful for being able to exercise debating skills on ClubBleach. Also, everyone there is always civil, and I barely ever see a serious argument.

CBNL: You clearly keep coming back for more… any reasons in particular for this?
itsovernow: Mainly that it has everything that I enjoy doing – I doubt that there’s a single section that I haven’t used at least once. Also, it’s great to know that you always have something in common with the people there – and that if all other conversation breaks down you can always talk about anime.

CBNL: So what other anime do you enjoy? Any Genre/Series in particular?
itsovernow: Yep - romance. No other anime genres compare in my opinion. My current favorite series are Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Suzuka and Mai Hime.

CBNL: What do you like most about CB?
itsovernow: This may sound slightly strange but…the forum is perfect in terms of size. There are enough people that there are always new posts and there’s always something to reply to whenever you go online, and it’s small enough that you can get to know everyone. I’ve tried joining other forums, but they’ve either been so huge that you never see the same person twice, or so small that there’s barely any activity.

CBNL: If you had the power, what would you change?
itsovernow: I would either merge the ‘General Lounge’ with ‘Randomness’, or just make it so that post count didn’t increase there. There’s far too much spam that goes on in there, and far too many people who get away with it.

CBNL: Any complaints about the site?
itsovernow: I actually thought for ages on this one…I really couldn’t think of anything =D – it’s a great forum.

CBNL: Would you recommend Club Bleach to someone else?
itsovernow: Yep, definitely. I have done in the past and will continue to do so for anyone I know who likes Bleach.

CBNL: Tell us a bit more about you hobbies outside of CB…
itsovernow: Chess mainly – my only real talent =D (I play for my county U100 team). Other than that I like karate, rock climbing and tennis, and the Final Fantasy series. I also program in VB and I’m currently learning C-script.

CBNL: Wow! U100? Well don on that! So you’re not just a pretty face ;)
CBNL: I notice that you are one of the newly recruited Espada members… Would you please enlighten me at to you opted to join the Espada's rather than the better known Gotei 13?
itsovernow: Well, I was in the Gotei at first – in the 6th division. Then I was offered the position of Espada of the 2nd Espada Division. It was a horrible choice whether to leave the 6th or not, and in some ways I still kinda regret making the choice I did, but in the end I just couldn’t refuse the thought of all that power =D. Not to mention the benefits of being able to change people’s avatars and signatures.

CBNL: How do you find the experience of being a espada member?
itsovernow: So far I haven’t really had time to experience the differences between the Espada and the Gotei – members were a bit slow in coming to the 2nd Espada at first, and so far none of the Hueco Mundo contests have started, nor have I been able to steal anyone’s points =D. Still…hopefully that’ll come in time.

CBNL: Would you encourage other members to become Espada members in contrast to joining the G13 project?
itsovernow: Yep – definitely. The Espadas, although the rival division to the Gotei get lots more immediate benefits than the Gotei 13 members, and no disadvantages to the Gotei. Still, there aren’t many active members in ClubBleach that aren’t already in a division and after seeing some of the threats captains have been making to their members who ask to leave (and when I say ‘captains’ I mean ‘Thing’ XD) I doubt recruits will be that fast in coming.

CBNL: Anything else you’d like to say?
itsovernow: Other than taking advantage of this exposure to advertise the ClubBleach RPG – something that everyone should join in with – I think that’s everything.

CBNL: So take more advantage! ^_^ Tell us a little more about it… How it works, how to get in on it, etc.
itsovernow: Okay, I think Odanion already said a bit about it on the last newsletter, but it will be a forum based RPG. We'll be using a simplified form of DnD for the battle system, and the players will role-play the rest. We currently have 13 GMs, who will fill the roles of the 13 captains and are also currently organizing the RPG and writing the rules. The RPG is currently in a beta testing phase with a few select people, but we'll be letting a lot more people onto the site soon.

FORUM REVIEW:
PEN AND QUILL

Hear ye! Hear ye! The Club Bleach Writer’s guild is now in session! Well… not really… But if it were then in Pen and Quill forum would be where it could be found! This is a place where more of our talented Club Bleach members can show off their work, even though it may be of a different kind from the previously reviewed Brush forum.

Here you will find some amazing writers, along with some less experienced ones. Either way, they want to share their works of verbal art with you and hear what you have to say.

In the Original Stories section there is a wonderful display of creativity, with some talented poets and authors. Come, read and share your opinions about their stories, offer advice about how you think they could improve and maybe even take a few hints for your own writing growth if you are looking to expand…Also featured is the Writer’s Axe section, a place for inspiration and a sharing of ideas to help our aspiring writers break through whatever blocks they may have.

The Lyrics Forum also a nice little feature. With the lyrics to your favorite songs, whether you may be looking for them or wanting to share some with others, this is a great place to connect to your music on a more poetic level.

Then, have you ever wanted something you’ve seen/or read to go in another direction? Or how about wanting to hear the story after the story? In Fanfics forum, you can find your ideals to be shared with everyone! Whether it’s your own creation to post, or maybe an alternative ending you’re just glad to find written by someone else… this is the place to be!

Whatever your writing desires or requirements, Pen and Quill is a great place to gather, be inspired, receive encouragement and get involved. Maybe we’ll find a few great writers amongst the masses yet.

FEATURED THREADS

So we all know about the Marraige (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=10081&highlight=Divorce+thread) and Adoption (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=13363&highlight=adoption+thread) threads, and let’s face it they sound pretty cool. But let’s not forget about The Divorce Thread (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=10222&highlight=Divorce+thread), also to be found in Randomness, where you can divorce your… uhhh… previously loved one. But just in case you’re also having second thoughts on your second thoughts, you can also be re-married to once again rekindle and rejoin your once lost love!

Speaking of families, one favorite family pastime to always be enjoyed is games! (Hey, who am I kidding, games is anybody’s favorite pastime!) And in randomness, there are plenty! Such as the highly popular thread (created by the great SandalHat himself), Throw something at the next user (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=2790). The title is self explanatory, and with 314 pages (still going strong too I might add), is a wonderful place to be a little silly and have some good clean fun (well, most of the time at least!) Just watch out that no-one tries throwing a Zanpaktou at you, if they do, you can throw them...

…here (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=2456), to the ‘If you had a Zanpakutou (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=2456)’ thread, where members can create their own Zanpakutou, fully equipped with Shikai, Bankai, and all the little specifications you choose. Here you can read what other members’ Zanpakutous are all about, and hey, maybe even challenge someone with your own!

Hmmm… Then again, maybe not. That could turn nasty if we don’t watch it… At least in The Games Recommendation Thread (http://forums.bleachportal.net/showthread.php?t=10720), maybe you could find a virtual arena suitable for a real challenge! Albeit between yourself and someone else, or your mind versus a computer, come here and ask about whatever game it is you are looking for. I’m sure someone can think of the ideal one for you!

Well, that’s it for our Featured Threads this issue, stay tuned for more intriguing finds right here on CB.

CRITICS CORNER

Due to lack of general interest in the Bleach Anime at the time, as well as laziness on part of the Editor in Chief of this NewsLetter, there will be no Bleach ANime or Manga critiques this issue. Instead, we'll introduce a new feature, "Other Anime." This issue's subject is....

Yakitate!! Japan
Story: 10
Animation: 9
Artwork: 9
Character Development: 10
Music: 10
Enjoyment: 10

Title: Yakitate!! Japan
Kanji: 焼きたて!! ジャぱん
Other Titles: Freshly Baked!! Ja-pan!, Yakitate Japan, YJ
Genre: Comedy, Shounen
Episodes: 69
Year: 2004-2006 (12.10.2004 till 14.03.2006)
Companies: Aniplex, Sunrise, TV Tokyo, d-rights

Summary: The title Yakitate!! Japan itself has a clever pun. Yakitate means “fresh baked” while the word “Japan” is actually a pun. The “pan” in “Japan” means “bread” in Japanese. So the title literally means “Fresh Baked Bread” which suites the anime perfectly.

“There’s English bread, French bread, and German bread, but Japan’s bread, Japan, does not exist. In that case, there’s no choice but to create it. This story is a serious, biographical ballad of a boy who possesses Solar Hands, Azuma Kazuma, who will create a Japanese bread, made by and for the Japanese people, which can be presented to the world proudly.”

When Azuma was six years old, Azuma, his sister and family members were forced to eat nothing but natto, miso soup, and rice for breakfast (natto and miso are fermented soybeans based foods.) His sister yelled that their family should start having bread for breakfast sometimes, but their grandfather refused to even consider it, as he would only eat natto, miso soup, and rice for breakfast. Azuma agreed, saying he didn’t like bread. But one day Azuma was brought into a new world never yet experienced before as his sister kidnaps him to a bread store to shows him the wonders of fresh-baked bread. Azuma falls in love right away. There, the owner discovers that Azuma has the magical “Hands of the Sun”, also known as the Solar Hands, whose warmth makes them particularly ideal for making bread. Also, the owner tells Azuma of his dream to create a bread specifically for Japan known as Japan.

One day, as Azuma came to visit the bread shop, the owner packs up and goes to Tokyo to fulfill his dream of making Japan. Remembering the story about Japan, Azuma continues his own bread-baking at home and decides to also pursue the dream of making a bread for Japan one day. Ten years later at the age of sixteen, he also ends up at Tokyo himself to compete for a spot at the most famous bread store in Japan, Pantasia!

Critique: Three words that describe it all: Smart. Funny. Educational.
An anime about bread?!?! “NANYAYE!!!” At first it sounded lame but when you get caught in the world of bread-making, there is no going back. When we think of bread, we usually think of the bread that comes from a supermarket, pre-sliced, packaged, and tied off with the twisty thing. But in Yakitate!! Japan, there are dozens upon dozens of breads that you never knew existed. From breads that go along with miso soup to breads you could make with a rice cooker (Where the anime actually teaches you how to make Japan #2 at home in one episode. Isn’t that neat?)

“Reactions.” “Reactions” is one of the main reasons that will bring you back for more Yakitate and also one of the main reasons why Yakitate is funny. “Reactions” occur when a person with overly-sensitive tastes eats something very delicious. These “reactions” are usually a pun or a symbolism of the name of the bread or food. All “reactions” are very unique and never the same. Just watch Yakitate!! Japan and you will find out what I mean.
Educational? Yes that is correct. You ever wonder what ingredients were used to make that bread? No worries. Yakitate!! Japan covers every aspect of it. Whether it’s the step-by-step process or the ingredients used to make the bread, it’s all there. The descriptions are highly detailed and very precise. Even nutritional facts are given about the ingredients and how they help the human body.

Overall…Yakitate!! Japan receives a 10 out of 10 rating. YJ is a must watch. As of now, the series (total of 69 eps) has just recently finished 1-2 months ago by Anime-Empire. A-E is the sub-group that translated YJ. Recognition goes to A-E for their high-quality episodes and their Editor’s Notes that help you understand the puns that go on within YJ. They did a fantastic job so there shouldn’t be any disappointment. So what are you waiting for? Go out there and indulge yourself into the world of bread-making.

Mini-Mods
"This will be closed."
"You will be banned."
"This is going to be deleted."
"Don't post here."
"You're spamming."
You see these kind of posts around, occasionally, from people who try to help impose some kind of order on the forum, but don't have any real power--"Mini-Mods," as I call 'em. But these posts rarely help anyone out, and are more often likely to just cause people to be irritated.
If you are not a Mod, you really have no right telling people what/where/how to post, and when not to post. If someone spams in a thread, then don't say "Hey, you're spamming, quit it!" Just tell a Mod and let them handle it, since there's really not a thin you can do about it. If you see a repeat thread, don't tell people not to post there--report it to a Mod, and let them merge the threads if necessary. Most of the time, all you do by posting this kind of thing is make even more problems, and you're really only spamming if that's all you post (after all, you're obviously not posting on the topic of the thread, yourself). Finally, what happens when you are wrong? What if a Mod decides that it's NOT spam, or what if they decide that it's NOT a duplicate topic, and allow the post or thread to stay as it is? Then you'll only succeed in looking like a dumbass. Heh.
It's nice to help out once in a while. If someone obviously doesn't know the rules of the forum, kindly direct them to the FAQ, or mention at the end of an otherwise-on-topic post. But leave the moderation to the Mods, kay?

As a final note...

The Club Bleach Newlsetter has grown fairly popular. Some articles have been ommitted from this one, because we wanted to keep it fairly small (and because we're lazy, heh). Due to this popularity, we'll probably be doing the Newsletter every two weeks.

Have fun reading!

[Edit] Thing's Interview is still in the editing phase, but will be released in this issue! Be sure to check back for the update!

Hmmm... 'bout the Mini-Mods peroblem, how 'bout you tell everybody in CB who are the Mods, just so that they'll know whom should they turn to? (and to spread our glory of course...)

Although, scrolling to the bottom of the forums is easier.

Indeed. Scrolling to the bottom of the page is the easiest way, but most do not do it. Hence, why not somehow make sure they know about us?

You guys are awesome. Wonderful work, Sar. THis was a quality producation and an excellent read, packed with informative CB content. DB's interview in particular was fun.

And Red's review of Y!J is superb and makes me want to watch it. Nice komiksu as well.
There were a couple of spelling mistakes, it's hard to see how you can get vBulletin wrong when it's at the bottom of the page, but it seems to be reliably misspelled as 'VBulliten' =/ There are a couple of other errors.

But really, ignore me. I'm a pedant, and you did an amazing job :)

THanks, all. And Maxi, when I was making last-minute edits, I'd just got off a 16-hour shift. XD That's why we're going to need another editor, soon...

Very nicely done Sarteck and gang. That was some very nice reading. Keep up the great work. The comics were really funny. I <3 Mool's comix. Well...now everyone knows a little more about DB. So there shouldn't be any more gender confusions. lol

Thanks minna~ I am glad I was able to attract a couple of people. ^_^ Hopefully, it will attract others in the forum to watch YJ! as well and add more activity from the members to just discuss and remember great moments in the anime.

We have Ladies on the staff? DAMMIT! I told my VC not to allow Them to do anything... >.o

Next issue will be even better! We're designating responsibilities to several Divisions so we can concentrate on some areas more thouroughly! :D
