Hey people, I'm staffmember on Frozen Flowers.
I hope you like this tutorial:
--------------
In this tutorial I am going to teach you how to make a simple, yet nice looking background for pictures/wallpapers/etc with Photoshop.
I am using Photoshop version 7.0, I believe the commands are the same for newer versions.
1] You start with a new empty document, the size doesn't matter that much. I will be using a 450x450 canvas.
2] Fill the background with a colour you like. I've chosen for a dark pink/purple (#A20A8E) colour.
3] I am going to use 3 pictures in the background. [Click] This is the first one. Paste this picture over the coloured background. Photoshop will automatically make a new layer out of it. Now you should have something like this:

4] Next we are going to Blur the picture. Go to Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur. You will get this window:
http://members.lycos.nl/aggron/Tut02.jpg
It doesn't matter what you fill in here, play around with the angle and distance to get something you like. I am using: Angle 40 and Distance 100.
You should have something like this now:

5] Repeat step 3 and 4, but with a few differences. Make use of different pictures now:
I used these 2 pictures: Picture #2 Picture #3.
When you do the Motion Blur on these pictures make sure to fill in different numbers for both pictures. You don't want them all to be the same!
I have this now:

Well that doesn't look pretty at all, lets change that!
6] We are going to change the layer modes of the 3 blurred images. You do this by clicking here in the layer menu:
http://members.lycos.nl/aggron/Tut05.jpg
Now you will see the different layer modes that you can use. Select random modes for each blurred image till you get something that you like. Don't worry if it doesn't look nice right away, that’s why you need to play around with the layer modes!
I prefer to use these modes myself: Dark, Multiply, Colour Burn, Linear Burn, Lighten, Screen, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge, Overlay, Soft Light, Vivid Light, Linear Light en Pin Light. The others don't look that nice in my opinion. In my image I have used: Vivid Light, Soft Light and Screen.
7] This was my final result:

These backgrounds can be a nice start for a wallpaper or any other picture. This is what I did with mine:
