powerful story line, good character development, depending on type of anime whether they do it well for instance fight scenes in bleach are good, straight to action unlike for instance DBZ where its constipation for one episode and stupid macho talk before some guy blows the other up.. in this they go into depth about weapons, fighting styles, very imaginative, the abiltiy to change the depth of emotions potrayed, i can go on for ages here but you get the point
The main thing that makes an anime good in my opinion is the characters - especially the main character. If you don't like the main chracter its very difficult to watch because the chances are that the main character isn't gonna die. Other than that, good storyline and humour always helps.
Also animes with a legendary, pivotal episode around episodes 15-17 seem to do well.

All of the above are definitely major reasons anime like Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha and One Piece are very popular series. In addition, these anime are tailor made for the main stream audience with a large cast of characters, epic storylines and themes that don't push the envelope as much as some other anime.
Then again, the sheer amount of episodes is not really an absolute measurement of popularity nor is it a true measurement of 'quality'. DBZ for example is an absolute failure (IMHO)in terms of character and story development, but it's got over 200 eps. Trigun has only 26 eps and it kicks DBZ's ass in terms of story, characters and plot development.

character no doubt, their characteristic, the storyline..mysteries, and of course, there sure be a fave character eveyone will love, like ichigo and urahara is liked by many, so does kakashi and sasuke..

I think the genre also plays a role because Naruto and Bleach are both shounen action type shows. The addition of tragic character backgrounds and the great development of the characters come from the shoujo angst/slice of life anime. The good blend make for more interesting shows. DBZ being an example of a purely shounen anime based solely on action and Kare Kano or To Heart as purely shoujo anime based on characters and relationships.

I'm just wonderin.... animes such as bleach and naruto are very popular but wat is it dat makes it popular? wat is it dat makes the audience get hooked onto an anime?
I can't think of one anime that was ever actually considered "un-popular" (or atleast one that I was watching). Trigun, Bleach, Samurai Champloo, Inuyasha, Outlaw Star, Azumanga, Fate/Stay Night, and even DBZ.
In the area where I grew up, mostly through middle school, Cartoon Network was what most kids watched. So regardless of the anime title, it was anime, so it was automatically popular: everyone would be talking about the new DBZ episode during lunch.
But that was back when, I think, anime wasn't even close to it's peak of popularity. People weren't downloading the newest episodes via torrent, and I think in 7th and 8th grade no one knew what a forum was ;P. Also, people weren't reading mangas in the libraries or in lunch. This is all a totally different story in the present. And this is what makes anime's popular: word of mouth. If you see someone reading a manga about an anime you're never heard or, or hear a conversation about one you've never heard of, what are you going to do? Google it! (what else :P). So each person will like anime for their own reason and maybe influence others to follow.
Basically what I'm saying is that I've never come across an Anime that I didn't like. So I would automatically think that is was popular because people wouldn't tell me otherwise.
So the only thing I can tell you, is why I love watching anime: I wish I was them. I wish I had my own special powers and a sword or a servant. I've always wanted to be put in the main caracters shoes, but we all know that's impossible, so the closest thing to that was watching. So as long as the characters are doing something that I wish I could do, or are in a situation that I wish I was in, I like that anime.

A good storyline is essential.
Good drawings aren't that important anymore, there are just too many animes with good drawings but with a lousy plot. -_-

I think, you can agree or disagree, that the FIRST thing that catch the attention is
the TITLE.
You will be hooked with a title like ( im giving a false example) " Sword of cursed Samurai ". A STRANGE TITLE ( ex : BLEACH) or a SUGGESTIVE TITLE that you like because of your anime/manga style ( ex : DEATH NOTE ).
Then everything can kick back in , like animation level , storyline and main character 's popularity.
Seriously , the first thing that catch the eye is either the Title if you search an anime or the design if you find an image of an anime, then you search what it is.
Who will be interested in an anime named ( also fake example) " Little Kitty Adventure "
Agree or disagree ? :winking56

An anime is nothing without a fanbase, and through mass media sites or search engine bases like Animesuki or AnimeTurnPike, an anime will get recognized.
Of course, a Japanese anime will not be recognize if it is not understood, so translators and SUBBERS are the key to foreign fanbase success. Animation companies (of any country) should be so grateful that so many of their fans are bilingual and dedicated to spreading the love.
All that other junk like plot line, character development, artwork, soundtrack, and a title are only secondary to having a fanbase. Even stupid shows can become popular if they have stupid supporters, right?
Having a good, well rounded show with all the trimmings only attracts fans and loyal viewers. Making a show popular is having viewers (intelligent or not) coming back for every episode.

For me, I would say an anime that gets your attention. One that when you watch it, you can't turn away..you're pulled into it. Enough people get pulled into it, they start turning into fans of the show. Look at me for example, I didn't even know what Bleach was a couple of months ago, and now I am a huge fan of it.

What makes an anime good is the storyline and the plot. The character development is another essential element as well. The drawings aren't really important, I rather watch an anime with poor drawings with a good storyline and plot too it, take Samurai Champloo for instance, I admit the drawings isn't perfect, but at least it has a good plot and story to it.

I belive that it is the characters and their situation that makes a show popular. If those two things sucked, no one would watch it. I, like most of you, don't belive that art style has anything to do with it. There is this REALLY old show called Dororo that has the absolute worst art style I've ever seen. (Tezuka Osamu art style, god I hate it) But I know the plot and love the characters so I'm dying to see it. I haven't seen it yet, but I will as soon as I can. If the art stopped me, I would miss out on a really good show.
So I think that the characters and plot make anime popular. If they didn't have those going for them, there would be no fanbase.

I'm confused by this because isn't popularity usually measured by the amount of fans that an anime has? Its like saying an anime is popular because its popular right?
If you mean advertising type promos and information like on sites such as Anime web Turnpike or Anime News Network then I must agree. Like the big studio movies that get lots of trailer spots on TV and in theatres to build up hype about the movie so people will go and watch.

If you are into art, read the book, or are really into literary based stuff then this should be a blast for you.
BUT....
If you are looking for a NORMAL anime this is not for you.
The art is incredibly stylistic in terms of texture, motion, and color and not like any other anime art I've ever seen.
It took my eyes and brain a while to get used to the animation. The story was kinda slow for the first couple eps but it quickly got interesting. I haven't read the book and I watched a movie of it but this was much better than the movie.
Its not one of my personal favorites but a very good anime none the less. It seems like one of those anime you either like or can't stand to watch.
What made you buy it?

I've watched the movie too and I did cry a little during that plane scene but I doubt they are going to make another movie or TV show. It's been a while since the original series ended but if there aren't any more manga volumes to create the storyline then I don't think there's much hope of a continuation.
And we all know what happens to anime that deviates from the original manga (Naruto, Bleach, Rurouni Kenshin). They start to suck rocks with filler eps.

well after episode 61 there's no point to watch the series cuz they are not inspired from the manga.
If you loved the anime series you should read the manga cuz in the manga there's Jinchuu Arc (the most important arc of the Ruroken)
I entirely agree. After the Kyoto Arc there really is no storyline that makes sense and you should continue reading the manga for the Jinchuu arc. Otherwise when you reach Reflections you will have no idea what some of the fight scenes are from and what relevance they have to the story.
They kinda did what Bleach is doing now and just going off on a random tangent just to take up space.

Nausicaa is another great Ghibli movie that really says "Go Green!" like nothing else.
As for other anime it has to be:
Tokyo Godfathers-even when you hit rock bottom you can still start over.
Gunbuster - Showed me what it means to dedicate your 'life' to a greater cause and that death is a shortcut.
Princess Nine - made me wish I could play baseball.
nausicaa is great but i don't know about tokyo godfather (abit too disturbing). if you've seen grave of the fireflies, would you say it's better then nausicaa? i can't decide. eventhough grave of the fireflies is depressing it has awaken something inside of me.

for me its the character. good character expression (especially the vocal) and unique concept such as gods in bleach that is very closely linked to buddhist belief. anime that make us endlessly guess are the most addictive (DBZ) but some light hearted one are more satisfying.

Doremon? Lol or Digimon?
Its Doraemon, a children's anime about a little boy and his robot cat called Doraemon. Doraemon is supposed to be from the future so he and the little boy get in trouble with all of the gadgets the cat has. It's one of the longest running anime EVER with over 2,000 episodes that started in 1973. No it's not a typo Doraemon has over two thousand episodes and dozens of movies.
My friend from Japan said that her cranky old boss has the Doraemon theme song as a ringtone on his cell which went off while he was lecturing her. Ha ha ha ha. It totally killed his image.

i'd have to say that the dragon ball was my first, and that was when i was really young. i wasn't into anime yet, but what really got me into collecting anime was GTO. after that, i got evangelion, ghost in the shell, akira, and then it was all downhill from there. i think i have about close to 70-80 titles now... sad, sad... :eek13:

I have yet to watch Grave of the Fireflies, but when I first saw Nausicaa as the US released movie Warriors of the Wind, the strong character of the Princess moved me. It was dubbed and hacked up a bit but its evidence of a great story that can still reach an audience. So when I saw the original subbed version I could really understand the story and that Nausicaa just wanted to protect the future of the whole planet.

most inspiring... as in, personally? c'mon, you didn't just ask the us army E4 nihon-jin that... i'd give you the typical answer.
DBZ. when i was a kid, i was getting picked on a lot. so i watched some dbz, and i wanted to be the prince of saijins and kick those bullies asses... of course i was just a kid. but it got me in the habit of working out... now, running, weight lifting (and now being in the army) was the fruit of that. bakada!!
but i'd have to say GTO has inspired me greatly. i do, actually, want to teach english in japan and eventually move there. as well as learn how to ride a motorcycle (cars are expensive as hell to own there. i don't think i'd be able to afford it)
and ai yori aoshi is another secret personal favorite of mine... hey, i'm a sucker for romance since i'm the 20, soon to be 40, year old virgin (c'mon, i'm not an otaku, why don't girls like me?) it's just the kind of romance you know will never exist, but still warms you heart and soul like quaker oats... quaker oats people...

i should get a lot of replies for this :biggrinlo
let's see. me? I have a lot, but among those, i have chosen the "cream of the crop".
top of the list?: Saito Hajime (from rurouni kenshin, peacemaker kurogane, etc)... c'mon, the guy's actually a real person. he'd be proud to know that he still lives on as a badass even after he passed on... to some people, that is true immortality. but, i like him personally because (from the anime's i've seen and by historical account) he was a very staunch and just man who followed his beliefs even after the shinsen gumi were disbanded, being a police officer for the new government. no hard feelings eh? that's a true man there...
next is brandon heat: true grave himself from gungrave. quiet guy who you could trust. so much that even after death, he keeps his promise. says a lot about the guy. :toocool:
eikichi onizuka: ah yes, ex motorcycle gang leader turned middle school teacher from GTO. a man who cares about his students, was captain of the karate team in college, loves to have fun, sees what is most important in life, and most importantly, a VIRGIN. yes, i can relate so much. you're my hero GTO.
yoruichi: simply put, everything i want in a woman. wise, tanned skin and dark hair with piercing eyes, deadly in martial arts, humorous, quick and limber, and can turn into a cat... (that's just so cool... even if it was a duck, turning into an animal is cool)... so if any of you lovely ladies here meet two of the requirements above, pm me :biggrinki ... j/k
a few others: suzuka from outlaw star, ichimaru gin, urd from ah my goddess, kenji (180sx power!!) from initial d, jack hoffner in licensed by royalty, and others i can't think of right now..
uh, did someone else already start a thread like this? hit me if they did

Zoro (One Piece): This guy is just the kewlest character in existance. this Triple sword wielding guy has the best fights in manga and anime (although manga fights are better). This guy knows no fear, he was prepared to cut off his own feet to fight against Mr 3 in Little Garden. His kewlest fights were against Mihawk and Mr 1 though. Currently he is about to fight Kaku from CP9.
http://img15.imagecash.net/preview/551769142.jpg
Chloe (Noir): How could you not love a knife wielding assasin/lesbian? Purple hair and kewl clothing make for a nice character look. Shes a little insane inside the old brain but thats ok.

akabane from getbackers:he is just so brutal, but has this aura of coolness about him, plus he can be quite deadpan.
sanji:just funny as hell.plus i like his fighting style
the mighty damuramu from the dragonhalf OVA:
whats not funny about a selfobsessed knight who refers to himself in the 3rd person, cant die from getting a sword iin the head since his brains too small.
soifon:cute, cool and other things i cant put my finger on.
shunsui:ever since his entrance to chad,i loved the comedic style and calmness about him.his shikai is so damn cool as well.
mayah jingu from burn up:an ample chested, gun mad sniper is sexy in my books.

yeah it depends on the quality... better quality means bigger size. I have Samurai Champloo eps 1-23 in one DVD but the quality sucks!
I also have naruto 1-170 and bleach 1-70

the reason i don't like most samurai anime's is because the fight scenes arent very good. It's just like ching ching ching, a final draw, and one person falling apart after a few seconds.
the only samurai anime with good action is samurai champloo. The fight seens are crazy. Maybe ninja scroll too...
I find this interesting considering that your screen name is blade000. Anyway, just out of curiosity as to how you came to form this opinion, what other 'pure samurai' anime have you seen?
And in defense of one of my favorite genres of anime, Samurai Champloo's battle scenes are much the same "ching, ching, ching" -hero talks to enemy- "ching, ching, ching" - enemy gloats over hero's weakness- "ching, ching, ching" - someone falls bleeding to the ground. It's basically the only way a samurai battle is fought, right? Unless you count the baseball episode, ha ha ha! (^_^)

well i've seen all the rurouni kenshin series, samurai champloo, samurai deeper kyo, samurai 7, and ninja scroll. Well i guess i haven't seen that many...but even though the storylines on most of these aren't bad, they would be fukcing awesome with better fight scenes. Like how SC had good fight scenes, but the story writing could have been better. Don't u think?

I thought the storyline for Samurai Champloo was good. I didn't even care about the animation quality. The storyline and plot quality is all it matters to me. I could care less watching an anime with perfect animation with a weak and bad storyline.

Of course not every action scene can be top-quality-intense-shit,
but like someone else before me said, RK Episode 30 - Kenshin vs Saito is one hell of a fight
Or maybe you just don't like samurai

Samurai fighting is the escense behind any fighting oriented scenario in japanese art/work.
Anything and everything fighting oriented is based and has a specific resemblence to Fuedal Era Samurai. Why? Because they have been Japans greatest fighters/warriors.
what to expect from a Samurai fight is baisicaly a dance tha is portraied excelently and conjugates the escense of honor and pride. Thats why as a Samurai rarely would you see someone fight dirty or un-nobly. because that was what they lived for. Hence why death plays such a big role. Being shamed in fighting, as well as being brought To shame in any other sircumsatance meant hara-kiri. Disemboulment of onesself.
even in the great wars fought by the samurai; being injured the samurai would kill themselves before being killed by enemy hands.
Also, the samurai that did not serve the lord of their respective prefectures would be known as the Ronin, or masterless samurai. Usually taking jobs as mercs and bodyguards. When you see Rurouni Kenshin, Kenishin is a merc, a hired assassin and bodyguard. yet his skills are superb and his fighting style is so up to par that he is almost characterized as a Ninja, for his speed and viciouse approach.
All that being said, I personally look for gracefull fighting, respecting one another, even if it is yoru enemy. All the fundamentals of honor and pride with every clash of swords.
That truly is what makes it beautifull

unfortunely, yes there are only 13 episodes in the anime but there is also the extra one of "air: summer special" which is a extended version of a part in the real anime. There is also the AIR movie which is practically the anime but shorter and different animation

BLASPHEMY my name is samurai... he doesnt like me..
It's not that he doesn't like samurai, he's just looking for cool action scenes involving guys waving around swords in intense battle sequences. Story notwithstanding.
I agree very much with Rokusaburo and his explanation of the basics of 'bushido' or 'way of the samurai'. Being a samurai was less about fighting and more of a way of life. They were the upper-middle class of Japanese society much like the Knights and noble families of Europe. Most samurai were also trained in poetry, music, dance and other forms of art and were participants in Japan's high culture.
Ninja, on the other hand are portrayed as assasins and warriors of the shadows. Also known as Shinobi, ninjas were trained in the art of stealth and assasination. In Bleach the 2nd Division under Soi-fon are the ninja branch of the Gotei 13. Yoruichi is also of that division and you have to notice how their uniforms are different from the other divisions. They wear close fitting clothes that are easy to move around in, not baggy like the others. Their skills involve speed (Shunpo) and their attacks involve instant death (Soi-fon's Suzumebachi takes only two strikes to kill). In Kenshin, Shinomori Aoshi and Makimachi Misao are members of the Oniwabanshuu group of ninja.
The most famous ninja clan is the Iga clan that was led by Hattori Hanzo under the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Some of the martial arts found in Japan actually migrated over from China. You've heard of the Shaolin Monks right? Ya, Japan borrowed alot from China, including their writing system.
Actually, now that I think about it, Samurai Champloo didn't have much real samurai fighting. The fighting style of Mugen resembles more Brazilian capoeira than anything else. Jin kicked ass in the traditional samurai style of course.
I just remembered a samurai anime that has animation that is similar to SC. Darker colors, sharper character animation and totally patchy as far as continuity and quality. It's called 'The Hakkenden' and it's story is based on the Legend of the 8 Dog Warriors of the Satsuma clan. The story is more serious and the fight scenes are graphic and intense, you might like it. Also someone on this forum recommended Blade of the Immortal as a good samurai anime.

my mother watched that movie and cried her eyes out.
as a half filipino and half japanese (it's strange, i know. one grandparent on each side was Japanese, but i was raised all over the place) i know full well the beef between filipino's and japanese.
i think you know about manzanar, the concentration camp that he us put on japanese americans in the world war... i had grandfather and grandmother of my cousin there... that war was definetely tragic and being here reminds me of my roots and how much my blood has been in war.
perhaps i'm stupid, but i'm the only descendant since my grandfathers that have joined the military and went to war, none others, and i think that all of them are opposed to it. i might even go as far as to say that they were ashamed of me (the japanese now HATE american soldiers) and now that i've become part of this picture that they hate, i've been kind of disowned.
my mother send some pictures of me to my uncles and aunts and didn't get even a "we're praying for him"... no reply at all..
i've digressed again... sorry!
anyway, i agree with you. though it may be just an anime, i recommend it to a person who is open minded and likes drama movies. its a realistic look at what war looked like for people on the other side...

To K.ogawa.
its good to see that there are people who still remember the tragic of the war. i've been contemplating on human behaviour (mostly western people) and they seems to be unaware or disconcern for less fortunate people. it seems like society now days are losing a sense of morality (it seems like the good people are extincting). don't get me wrong i'm not asking people to be depress but just be aware of the morals and help others out.

How do ninja's play a role in japan? are they related to samurai in anyway? are they better than samurai?
The origin of ninja isn't clear, but it's said that might be around 6th century. In the 15th century, ninja flourished as spys who helped feudal lords and samurai warriors. There were mainly two styles of ninja: Koga ninja which is originated in Shiga prefecture and Iga ninja which is originated in Mie prefecture.
Ninja were usualy the lower class farmers/peseants and what not, that would train themselves in isolation and create clans.
Ninjutsu--"the art of stealth, the way of invisibility"*
Ninja--"the legendary spies and commandos feudal Japan"
Since the ninja rarely left any traces or documentations of their history and selldomly boasted about their actions and glory, little is known of their culture and thus it is made a legend.
Deadly combatants, assassins, and spies, the ninjas were the shadow warriors for hire during the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries in Japan, a period of eastern history rife with conflict. The philosophy of the ninja was to operate in the dark quiet, unseen and unnoticed. They could go where armored warriors could not, accomplish in secret what greater numbers could not in the open. Ninjas were consummate fighters, but they preferred deception to outright violence, charisma to belligerence, night to day.
Traditionally, ninjas were trained from birth. They learned to be preternaturally vigilant of the world around them. By five or six, children's play took the form of training exercises which taught balance and agility. They learned how to walk without making noise, to assume disguises that allowed them to blend in with a crowd, and to scamper across trees and roofs with ease. As they grew older, these future ninjas began hand-to-hand combat and eventually weapons training.
I truly can not say if either a samurai is better then a ninja, but, I do certainly prefer the Samurai over the Ninja.

1.) Samurai X trust and Betrayal
2.) Rurouni Kenshin (mostly fights toward end of arc)

5.) Ninja Scroll
6.) Basilisk
7.) Samurai Champloo (at certain parts)
8.) Peacemaker Kurogane
You obviously havent watched much samurai anime if the only one you can think of is Samurai Champloo which had decent fight scenes. If I were you I would also check out Afro Samurai coming out at the end of this year. It should blow your mind..

Tednfs, don't you mean prequel? The Dawn takes place in WW2 when Walter was still a teenager. It's a pretty good series. Alucard's appearance in this series is kind of weird though. I know he says that he chooses how to look, but it's kind of......feminine.
No one should use the anime to judge the new OAV or the manga. The former's animation is some of the best I've ever seen and everyone looks closer to how they are in the graphic novels. All of the characters have a lot more depth too and are far more interesting. They start laying on the back story and personal reasons for them in the later half of the series.
Alucard really is a tragic induvidual. When you hear his story, then you can understand why he is what he is and why the monster carries on with his existence. You also learn more about Anderson and what he wants he in the end. No, it's not for all non-Catholics and monsters to die either. He actually shows compassion to someone who disagrees to what he believes.
Hell, even Maxwell's personality seems justified later and is kind of depressing when you learn of it later in the story...
