Kenshin made me always look towards the future and not give up because other people could be suffering much more than me.
Street Fighter II V the series is kick ass in music as well and always gets me pumped to do almost anything.
in addition to those, I'd like to add Fullmetal Alchemist, need to work hard to get things you want! and Hunter X Hunter.... the kindness of Gon

What makes a show popular? That's easy - it's the advertising it gets, from fans trying to spread the love.
What makes a show likeable? For me it would have to be the characters, I must love the characters before I love a show. Even if it does get reptitive I would still watch it. It's the reason I still watch Naruto every week, that show owns - filler or not.
I'm confused by this because isn't popularity usually measured by the amount of fans that an anime has? Its like saying an anime is popular because its popular right?
If you mean advertising type promos and information like on sites such as Anime web Turnpike or Anime News Network then I must agree. Like the big studio movies that get lots of trailer spots on TV and in theatres to build up hype about the movie so people will go and watch.
Popularity is how widely known and adored a series is. But, when I say "fanbase", I mean all the things that are incorporated with fans (i.e. clubs, sites, webrings, etc). For example, "pop music" or popular music is a collective genre of music that gets the most air time and most people recognize it.
There are some who don't like Pop, and it's only really popular because a vast bulk of people do.
So..some stinky shows have stinky fans or the opposite--maybe you like it or loathe that specific series--either way, if the quantity of fans is large, it's popular.

Firstly, its whether or not you want to give the manga or anime a chance. i mean no matter how good an anime sounds, or how much popularity it has, it depends on yourself.
Secondly, after giving it a chance, now what you gonna do is to leave the rest up to the manga or anime to impress you. i mean, no matter what the title is, even a normal title like YuYu Hakusho in which i don't even know what that means, after i gave it a chance and started watching it, i got hooked, by the storyline, the plot, the fighting scenes and most importantly the creativity of the show.
in one of the earlier posts i saw, one person mentioned that you have to like the main character to like an anime, i would like to disagree on that. i don't like Ichigo, i don't like Naruto, i don't like Inuyasha, i don't like Gon (no offense, i'm talking about the character names here, not the anime titles) they are all main characters of these popular anime like Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha and Hunter X Hunter. but i don't hate the anime, in fact i love to watch these anime. Take Hunter X Hunter for example, i keep on watching it not to see the main character, but to see the great story development and also my favourite characters like Hisoka and Kuroro etc. at the same time hoping that one day someone will kick Gon in the ass, same for Bleach, i continue to watch it to see Gin, Aizen etc. hoping that one day they would kick Ichigo in the ass (of course in the end Ichigo will win)

I was always under the impression that ninja's did all of the Samurai's dirty work, all of the stuff that would disgrace a samuri's honour a ninja would do eg. assasination etc.
Samurai's also carried out assasinations. If it was for the good of the country, a samurai would not hesitate to cut down a man who stood in the way of peace..(i.e Kenshin)

Not in the good of a counrty; more like, If your master told you to do anything, you would it without question.
Even if he told you to take your own life, you would do it without thinking twice.
And no, The ninja didnt do the samurai's dirty work (Lol) most of them were hired against the samurai. thats why its been always very controuversial, ninja vs. samurai. even though some lords did hire ninjas to carry out missions and deliver messages and work with the samurai.
but assassinations and shiet like that was mostly done by the ninja. Even tho a samurai who was a merc. for hire would be sent to do any type of job. That was his specialty, if he needed to kill someone, protect someone, deliver a messager w/e. Best example of a samurai like such, would be Kenshin

wow, it's good to see that there are other people out there with a good head on their shoulders. i've thought of that as well. though it's sad that "morals" have gone down nowadays, you can't deny the fact how far we, as humanity, has come in the past century. i talked with a buddy of mine a few days ago about this actually.
if you look at world war II and world war I, those were big wars led by a crazy dictator. and thought they're not extinct nowadays, i don't think people are massly blind to follow them as they are nowadays (though there are radical muslims, there are in fact, many muslims that totally disagree with all the fighting, who are peace loving and respect all other religions)... but then again, you have iran and all them other countries that just act like they're triffling, ya know? i mean, if you want nuclear capabilites for power, then more power to ya, but if you're acting suspicious, then what the hell are we supposed to do? and all because of what? because they want isreal. i think you know, but muslims have been fighting over the "holy land" for a long time, they think that it's rightfully theirs. and to me, that seems really damn immature. ya know? get the hell over it, someone else is living on that land. God still loves you even if you're standing somewhere else... sheesh... now they want to raise ruckus and the US thinks they're the world police trying to get their hands on everyone else's business...
okay, i've digressed yet again.
but i agree, people have lost that "loving feelin" for others. and though i disagree how the war is being run, i will never regret what i've done here, even if its just a little... i guess its like ichigo, in a way. you can't just protect your family, you have to want to protect everyone you can... and when i came here i thought "well, i'll do it for my friends and my family"... but now, it's changed. when i saw those kids fighting over pens and paper, it really breaks my heart how us in america can take for granted lots of things... now, i do it for the people of afghanistan. some people back home dont' give two shits about these people, but now that i'm here, i will care, do what i can, and pray for them, because to a lot of these folks, we've changed their lives a lot for the better and they are so optimistic about their future... we wouldn't want to wreck it all over again.
though i'm a Christian (not religious and dogmatic, more spiritual) i am studying buddhism, mainly zen, and have actually adopted some of the beliefs. the good thing about buddhism is, it has no "god", just rules that you strive to follow... or something like that, so i can practice along with my Christianity..
well, sorry for the book guys. :face82:

Kenpachi (Bleach) - courageous and strong. I like his bad@ss, fearless attitude. His rietsu seems to have no boundaries.
Saber (Fate Stay Night) - Cute, Elegant, and Strong. I love how she talks.
Mai (Mai-Hime) - loyal to her brother, emotionally strong, kind and caring.
Nina (Mai-Otome) - she's cute and you gotta love her "weakness". I like her cold attitude, and when she opens up, she even cuter.

I used the search function and browsed the Anime/Manga pages a few times but I didn't see anything regarding this anime, which surprises me...usually I'm not the first person to post on a topic. I guess there's a first time for everything.
It's along the lines of a drama/romance/ecchi.
Highschool girls, art, and more drama then you can shake a stick at. I suggest you check it out. Giving a brief synopsis would almost ruin the first few episodes, so I'll keep it short.
The story revolves around Hiroki and his younger cousin Elis. Hiroki is an apprentice at the same Highschool that Elis goes to, and is also the art club supervisor. Everything else evolves on it's own. The plot consists of love and conflict.
I will warn you though: the first few episodes are repetative, but it starts to mix up a bit.
Enjoy :)

my favourite characters, lets see
NOT IN ORDER
1) Ichimaru Gin (Bleach) - always hiding his real motive and emotions behind that grin and that amount of confidence he have, he's gonna be the character man
2) Shishio Makoto (Rurouni Kenshin) - one of the true badasses out there in anime, knows how to make use of his own comrades to gain something for himself
3) Hisoka (Hunter X Hunter) - a real unpredictable character, will even cut off his own hand in a battle for the fun of it. loves battle and has the over confidence when fighting which demoralize the opponents
4) Kuroro Lucifer (Hunter X Hunter) - another one of the true badass out there, however compared with Shishio, this guy puts his comrades first before him, other than that, he is a real ruthless character who would kill you before you know it
5) Orochimaru (Naruto) - another crazy character like Hisoka, but still only top 2nd in the crazy character list. snakes and summoning as his strong attacks, you can't hate this character
6) Senshui (Yu Yu Hakusho) - an extremely strong character who don't even put others in his eyes, has very unpredicted nature as he has 7 personalities inside him altogether, and his calmness just makes him one hell cool character

So anyway, I just saw the movie last night and I have a few questions:
How the heck is Gracia in the non-alchemy world? I don't remember her dying in the series...
How is it that Hughes is an adult in the alternate world even though he died relatively recently in the series? So people are sent back and forth between the worlds, but don't necessarily start out as children? Why is that? Wouldn't people notice the personality shifts?
I don't know if anyone is even looking here anymore, but if you have any insights about this, I would really appreciate it!!

haha exactly...but there are some good scenes once in a while. I just don't like it when they run past each other and then u see the hero gettin hurt and ur like o shit he lost while the other guy is smiling but then all of a sudden the guy stops smiling and falls over dead. hahaha
How can you NOT like a fight scene like that?
Any samurai fight scene that lasts more then 1 slash of swords (1 swing) is a shamefull battle.
Ur quote, usually happens and thats it, one blow and its over and done with. And u guys were left expecting a kick ass battle.
Well in samurai fighting it is not like such.
Samurai devoted their fighting skills to be able to kill in one blow.
Have you seen the Kenshin Ova?
Kenshin @ the begging used to go through bodygaurd sin one blow, one after another in a sequence, it looks kick ass in your eyes cuzz he is stebbing one in the gut and then flying past him to stab another in the throat and opeining his skull, then flying past to another and slashing his body in half, whatnot.
But if it was one oponent against kenshin, it would just have been, one slash and the fight is over. Leaving you expecting more.
Thats how a true samurai fight is.
They devoted their skills into killing an oponent with one blow.
This is the best example I can find of the code of living for the samurai:
"One sword, One Cut and Victory.
I live without a mind, Emptyness is the blade I wield.
Dishonor to my land becomes dishonor to me.
Their is no such thing as failure, only death or success.
True peace is found when one seeks nothingness"

I heard some people say that they are making a second series of Fullmetal Alchemist and is this true? If so, I hope it would be good, but both Al and Ed staying at "our world" would be difficult for them.
I was disappointed at the ending, but overall this movie wasn't too bad.

I want to see how they deal with WW2. A lot of the people they're traveling with are the ones that the Nazis targetted for extermination. Hell, by the time the second war starts up they will be middle-aged though. It would be interesting if the war begins earlier because of their presence.

I lack cartoon network. However, Hayao Miyazaki is a great anime movie director, and I can say to all and sundry that his work is excellent :) . I wonder if Laputa Castle in the Sky will be shown. It's the first film from Studio Ghibli, and it's excellent IMO.

Gutts/Guts (Berserk) - Sheer badass. Thats all that can really be said about him.
Sunabouzu (Sunabouzu) - Ah, Sunabouzu. He's a hero you love to hate, and hate to love. Totally selfish sleazeball, but somewhere deep inside that corrupted adulterous heart a good guy. Still, it's good to see a hero who isn't a goody two shoes pretty boy.
Sanosuke (Rurouni Kenshin) - An all around good guy. Defender of the weak, sticking up for whats right. And hell, even though he isn't that strong he never gave up and still threw swings for his friends, even against Shishiou when he knew he stood no chance.
Greed (Fullmetal Alchemist) - He was pretty awesome in his own right. Greedy, yes. But not to a dangerous extent. And the fact that he wasn't a villain but more like an anti-hero made him even cooler.

Ya know, for people who read this thread and like realistic/accurate "samurai" manga, I'd definately reccomend Kozure Okami (also known as Lone Wolf and Cub) There's even movies of it as well. Unsure which came first, but either way, they're both pretty historically accurate if I remember correctly.

Spirited Away, Mononoke Hime, Castle In The Sky and Nausicaa are all being shown.
No one has to worry about Cartoon Network cutting the movies up either. They showed Spirited Away on that fridays thing and it still showed Haku coughing up blood and everything. Besides, it's friggin Miyazaki. Cutting anything out of his movies is a sin =p

no, it's just his drawing style. the characters might sometimes look the same, but that's just how it is with Miyazaki-san.
kinda like Akira Toriyama's drawing style. the characters that he designed for the new dragon quest games resembles the appearance of the characters from dragonball z.
same with Rumiko Takahashi too. the appearances of the characters from ranma and inuyasha are kinda similiar too.

Lone Wolf and Cub is a REALLY old series. Most of the tv shows and movies are in black and white! I think the manga came out first though. Another good samurai TV show is Zatoichi, the legend of the blind masseuse (spelling?). It's neat cause Zatoichi's walking stick is actually a sword. I've only seen a couple shows, again it's old but they are making new movies as well.

Miyazaki's films are like movie masterpieces made by Steven Spielberg: timeless and awe inspiring. I remember watching my first Miyazaki film, Nausicaa, and just loving the characters and the story.
If they are showing at least some of the movies in Japanese with subtitles then I might be interested. Then again, the Disney subs are absolutely horrible and unacceptable because they are just the english dialogue text with closed caption sound descriptions.

Ooooooh ya! That is another killer, literally, movie from back in the day. Seven samurai is the masterwork of Akira Kurosawa in all of its black and white samurai fighting glory. If you watch the duel scene it looks exactly like the samurai fight scenes we've been describing in this thread. Its a long movie though, 207 minutes, but so worth the time.

Personally i believe it's all about character's and storyline, however i have heard some disturbing rumours about Anime's and Manga's from Japan containing subliminal mind messaging. Freaky.
I don't think that its subliminal messaging as in brainwashing people but I do think that anime has unique qualities that make people want to watch. All of the reasons mentioned in this thread are the very qualities that make people want to watch more anime. It's the same reasons people watch TV shows or movies but anime is different from these because it is animated. There's a certain freedom that comes with being able to draw a character rather than trying to get someone to act a character.
Anime is also a fairly new thing to most people outside of Japan so the exotic factor helps to some extent.

So... After watching Black Cat 18 I have to say this anime is getting damn good. A few weeks ago I used to download the anime and watch it because I got used to it, but now things are getting interesting enough to make me wait with anticipation for the next episode. Train, Sven, and Eve have joined a group of sweepers lead by a Chrono Number to get rid of the Apostles of Stars. In the meantime the Chronos are attacking simultaneously using the sweeper alliance as a decoy.
The fights we've seen so far are Eve Vs Leon (the wind kid), and that card master chrono number Vs the fat gravity dude (Yeah I can't remember their names :/ ).
Next episode we should be seeing Sven and Preta Ghoul fighting (yes he's back!), along with a cat fight between Echnida and Chrono Number 1 ^^

i'll second that.
when i saw the ad for it and the preview i was like "oh, here we go again, another movie of white supremacy. they want to take everything from us!" ( the Japanese)
but i watched it and it totally changed my opinion. it's a beautiful masterpiece that i would say accurately portrays what bushido and what being a samurai is all about. people tend to think we're crazy and suicidal (because of seppaku and the kamikaze), but it's more along the lines of very rigid and blind faith and loyalty, which i think is wrong, but respectable. the motivation for seppaku was not just because of dishonor, but more along the lines of "if victory was not achieved, loss=death", and to them, it was simple as that and they didn't question it.
whoo... digressed a lot yet again

well said...
i think you know already, but anime was main entertainment in japan because it's expensive to pay actors and sets, etc. so they just drew stuff because of the economy and stuff after the war. so it blossomed into this. for us, it's normal for adults to watch anime... i think it'll take a little more while for people in the western world to accept anime as a normal form of entertainment (ask any adult that they won't think that watching animation is really mature... then again, a lot of adults are immature. i'm see it in the army everyday. adults are kids that are just bigger, pretty much, ha)

and 2; why the hell does everyone has to adopt the ways of Vash the Stampede? I won't kill you instead live and suffer. Yeah sweet, a'righ, sure I will? That would be my answer. Next time I post I'll make a list of anime that has the same concept. With this non-killing, bounty hunter parody.

Raxephon was alright to me, however, it was kind of hard to really follow the storyline. I mean, giant robots piloted by people singing. I did only watch a little bit of it, however, but it just seemed.....weird to me.

pokemon,hands down.
Exactly. Pure shit, not even worth my time. Though I admit I use to be a fan of that retarded crap.
And I don't like:
Howl's Moving Castle: Sorry it didn't interest me at all, it was weird.
FLCL: Boring.... and I didn't find it funny at all.
Dragonball Z was alright, just didn't like the long storylines, which was annoying.
And I didn't like Azumanga Daioh for some reason, didn't interest me, though I did have some laughs, not not much.

Hello! :)
I don't have any that I would call bad. I try to only go to stories that attract me.
I have to say that I like Rahxephon. It is a rather complex story but I find the use of music and mech to be an interesting mixture.
Witch Hunter Robin is a story that take some time to build but it is neat to me too.
Zatch Bell is a little strange and may not be to many people's liking but I find it to be fun.
I would say to keep an open mind on Rahxephon and Witch Hunter Robin.

naruto blows. dont get me wrong i have watched all episodes up til now and have read the manga since just before the timeskip so you cant say i dont know what i am on about.
character development is nonexistant
plot has been "rescue sasuke" for god knows how long
naruto is a one trick pony who only uses kage bunshin and rasengan.
due to lack of character development everybody grinds on your nerves.
and omg naruto is annoying.

This is a more of a love-hate anime for me...
The artwork and "fan-service" is awesome in this anime. But the story is a bit disappointing... I guess the main reason is that the anime got cancelled, so it stops in the middle.

Yes, it's an amazing anime. Although, the live action is much better.
I saw the first 2 episodes of the live action. It was pretty good, but i wouldn't put it to much higher then the anime. But i was suprised ot hear that when the final season of the series was first aired, it was the most watched episode in Japan's history.
As for the series, fighting is very minimal. Their are a couple scene's of people gettign beat up, but no ninja/samurai super power stuff.

GTO is not fighting, It's comedy. It' about Eikichi Onizuka, 22 years old and very single. Highschool dropout, ex-motorcycle gang leader, hornball, 2nd degree black belt in karate turned into a teacher.
He wants to become the greatest Teacher in Japan, even if the whole world is against him. He wants to help his students with their everyday problems and teach them a leasson in life.
Every episode teaches you a valuable lesson which can be applied in the real world. It is by far the best anime I have ever seen.

And Onizuka originally becomes a teacher to hook up with High School girls, along with become the greatest teacher. threw a turn of events, he cant acomplish the first one.

ff12 on PC?
ff7 was fantastic because it was the first one in 3d and of the good storyline, but in terms of gameplay and storyline i would have to say FF6 made it for me. the specifics are not as memorable to me but everytime i think of ff6 it leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling. ff7 was good but it fell short in terms of story compared to ff6
it doesnt seem like you have played ff1-6 because of your polling option -_-
and those people who say ff8 had a good story are so very wrong. it was decent at best, but not great. i have played ff4-8 and i can honestly say that the stories of ff4 and 6 are better than 8.
I could never play 1-6 after playing 7,8 & 9 - the fact that they were 2D were too distracting for me to be able to get involved in them. I think FFVIII is the best cos of amazing storyline, the best ending, great characters and smooth gameplay. The system for FFVIII with junctions and GFs was also the best imo.
FFVII was also very good, just not as good as VIII. FFIX - I didn't like having the characters in set roles, that kinda messed up the 'Role Playing' bit for me - I like to be able to customise my characters.

Ever since 10, square enix went away from role playing and tried different styles X-2 was mission based and XI was online based where there was no decent story. FF XII has been announced to go back to its roots like 1 - 10.
Im voting 7 because overall its the best story to me and theres so many little things you can do and i like how you can do so many things like final attack and 4 x slash which you cant do in any of the other games.
Btw has anybody played 3? i own 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,10-2 but never seen 3 for sale ever i know it was on the snes ages ago but i dont think it was ever released later on. Some people say 3 is the same as 6...
One last thing sorry but this not go in games section as opposed to anime/manga?

FF3 US is FF6 JAP. FF3 JAP was on the NES.
i cant believe that some of you cant play a 2D FF game -_-, just because it is in 2D doesnt make it bad. i started playing the 2D FFs before i played FF7 and 8 and i think they built up FF to what they are today. the summon system and job class system was made in previous FFs and just altered to fit the newer games.
if squareenix made a 2D FF today and you guys dont play it, it would be very disappointing since FF was never meant to be a graphics intensive game, its focus was always on the storyline and gameplay.

Ya, i may have gone overboard. But i do have a deep seated hatred for this game. And there is nothing at all i liked about it. Heck it took me a year, and 5 different times playig nto beggining over just gather the willpower to brign myself threw the Fire Cavern and that first city were you run fro mthe robot.

Hehe,FF8 was just hell, every so often there's a boss that requires about 300 tries to beat.
I remember,me and a friend of mine always race to beat it first. Well,we both got stuck at the Edea battle in the Garden Wars. Then I got through and 2 days later,he beat it aswel. Then came 2 months of fighting Adel and so forth.
In conclusion, the game was a pain. Not to mention that if you just junction 99 ultima's to Strenght and then do Lionheart, you pretty much feck up everything around you.

hey hey.. -___-
i like 8. heck it. i actually voted for 8 after reading ur posts. lol :)
it was the first rpg/ps game that i ever played so its really sentimental to me. i know its not the best in terms of gameplay that they had but look on the bright side they had ffx-2 too. like come on... changing costume? >_< heheh
anyway based on my observations. i've realised that those that love ffviii love it to the core and those that hate ffviii hate it to the core. pretty extreme i would say. :) and just making a generalization here: majority of those that hate it to the core played ffvii before hence they feel that ffviii was really bad.
and raven returns: if you're having trouble defeating your bosses then its most probably cos you haven't been levelling up enough or you chose a wrong strategy to fight them with. :p
anyway anybody who has actually played more than 1 ff game would realise that each individual gameplay makes the game unique so its not fair that you compare ffviii.
lol. its 6 in the morning and my brain has stopped working. i shall come back later to discuss this again. heheh seeya all.
