First of all, the definition of anime is Japanese animation, there can't possibly be American anime, only cartoons.

I'm pretty sure it's much cheaper for studios to license anime that are already made then to create their own, and try to make things right. Countries and people all have their own niches. Wow old skool animes. The ones that made get out of bed early in the weekends was The Robotech (or Macross for some) saga. But thats really old skool for most I think.
Other anime I liked to watch was Macron-1, Voltron (the original series), Saber Rider and the starsherrifs ummmm even Ulysses was one among them.

This anime is awesome! Its weird how it changes moods so quickly. They can change from a girl stabbing herself in the head multiple times 2 going 2 something cute like a picnic. Its a very weird anime but I luv the horror in it >:-) It doesn't start off very well but as Diablo said after episode 4 it hooks on. Its a great anime. 10/10 for me too ^^

There have been some pretty good American made cartoons.

The problem is that they all got taken off the air.

The ones that they make now are, for the most part, rather childish. There are a few exceptions( but don't ask me to name any).

If somebody really wanted too, they could produce quality cartoons in the U.S.

The problem is it requires effort. Nobody wats to put out actual effort. So they just license other people's stuff and make money by distribution.

Actually, if you want to get technical, most all animation is done in Korea and sent back to the US for voice acting and editing and all of that good stuff.

and amusingly enough, G.I. Joe was an anime. I wonder why there was an anime about the american army? I know it had something with do with Srgt. Slaughter being a global wrestling icon, and japan loved wrestling at the time.

But what I think american cartoons are missing is the Warner Brothers Animation that ISN'T superhero cartoons. Stuff like Looney Tunes, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, ect. There's no real zany antics coming from them anymore. No anvils falling on peoples' heads, no wacky chase scenes, nothing D: and this makes Nitros sad D:

There is a difference between importing Korean kids to draw our cartoons, and having our stuff drawn over there.

As for why no American "anime"-esque cartoons? becuase the consumer base is not large enough to merit the cost of producing a adult aimed full anime series in America. While a regualar kiddy cartoon, we have millions of kids who will watch ceremonialy.

If Anime interest continues to expand across the culture at it's current rate, you may start seeing some in a few years. But dont plan for anything anytime soon.

I would personally love to have an American Anime, because i dont know a whole lot about Japanese culture, i miss out of alot of the jokes based around it. I would love to have some based on American Culture i can get.

There is nothing wrong with American animation. The American animation has evolved to more teen oriented. They definately are trying to adapt to the anime craze. Instead of jumping on the bandwagon, I see them trying to maintain a unique art style. My favorite being Teen Titans... the art is good and the storyline is pretty deep. The art is pretty unique... it blends anime with cartoon. Another nice American Anime is The Batman.

I'll start something. Everything was going smoothe until the end o.O The end was weird. And someone explain to me about the Adam thing.

The end is the 'real' story of Evangelion coming out onto the surface. That is, the exploration into human ego, the nature of interaction between people and the true definition of freedom and happiness.

For the 1st 24 eps, that story was told by mixing SHinji's inner feelings with the mecha-action and secret orgainsations like NERV, to show the hypocrisy of humans and how their morals degrading, leading to the next generation (people like SHinji) to become afraid of hurt, and retreat from the outer world of interaction and relationships. That's reflective of the Japanese Otaku teenagers that's becoming an issue in Japan.

But most people missed that. They thought this was a Gundam type anime and focused on "how strong the AT field was", or "how good their weapons are", when in actual fact the AT field represents the barrier that separates human minds from one another, making it impossible to predict the thoughts of others. ANd that, is Shinji's greatest fear: the unknown nature of the minds of others, and the thought of being hated and not knowing it.
It's also about Shinji's relationship with women. You can notice that in the instrumentality, only Rei, Asuka, and Misato are involved in the core of the intrumentality and when they approach Shinji's mind, it's an interaction that occurs between SHinji and the main females of his life.
Rei: an ultra-ego
Misato: as a motherly figure (guardian)
Asuka: as a lover/partner

The last two episodes were the ultimate resolution in Shinji's mind itself, relising how he wants to live in a world where other people actually exist, and what truly makes him happy.

Instrumentality was a device that was used to initiate Shinji's mental journey, also implied throughout the series as the "path to godhood" as Shinji ultimately decides whether he wants to change the world, or leave it as it is.

I'm sorry that was very poorly written....i have a more detailed and sophisticated essay about this somewhere.....

In the end SHinji decided to accept the present world that he lives in, not the instumentality. The instrumentality started without Shinji's consent. (I get a feeling that everyone was killed then their souls were gathered around to do this project...otherwise it's not possible...)

It was a project to give Shinji the power to change the human world, thus it was referred to as "the pathway to god" by Gendo.
Shinji accomplished the project by overcoming his own fears of others and accepts the present state of the world (the world where there are other people). He could've chosen to continue to exist in an empty world with only himself in it so that he wouldn't get hurt by emotions...if he wanted to.

So, the people are congratulating him for coming out of the project a happy person...and overcoming (kind of) his paranoia of other people.

That's my interpretation, you might get something a little different from another fans...but those interpretations may also be correct.

Lilith was there because she was Adam's first wife...and the "forbidden fusion" between Adam and Lilith was because Lilith wasn't Adam's real wife, Eve was, so basically, Hideaki Anno named the other angel Lilith just to symbolise the forbibben nature of their re-union...so if you dont understand that...it's okay, because in the end, they are just two angels named Adam and Lilith ... but Eve doesnt exist in Evangelion really....

Nice interpretation. I agree with it for the most part. loved the last couple episodes in which they use instrumentality. Nice little concept. The end movie imo wasnt really the climax but a good finisher. Shinji has already accepted his morals and is now ready to let people in emotionally. Im not to sure about the whole lilith-adam-eve thing only because I havent done any research on lilith and all the different interpretations that their are in different religions. I thought both adam and eve came from lilith? Im probably wrong though.

also, they did find lilith as the same time as adam since I believe it was stated in the anime.

O and bout the characters, because of the project thingy, all the at fields like deactivated or something like that and because it was gone, all the humans werent able to retain their forms since yea, the AT was and that is why u saw all the crosses in the air. i dont think it was stated in the anime when they found lilith, but it was stated that they found Lance of Longinus during the gigantic falling Angel episode. Why I thought they found lilith at the same time was because...if lilith wasnt there already...WHYYYY would the angels come? The angel's main goal is to merge with Lilith and make 3rd impact anyways...

Oh speaking of the movie...there are two popular theories that i want to flame.

Theory: After instrumentality (3rd impact) was dstopped, we see only Shinji and Asuka on the beach. Everybody else is dead, Shinji and Asuka are the new Adam and Eve who are to re-born the whole world.

NO! This is one of the few interpretations that don't work.
It was clearly stated by Yui that anyone who wishes to come back can.
Therefore Asuka is here. Asuka was skewered by the Lance of Longinus, which would make it impossible for her not to have died. So Asuka, one of the people we know for SURE has the will to keep living, came back from death.
Now they are waiting for other people to want to come back...they're only the first ones.

Theory 2: Asuka's eyes are brown. That means she's the fusion of Misato herself and Rei.

I respect ur prefrence to the Alternate ending, but as said earlier...The original ending was NOT anti-climax...it was the climatic ending for the REAL story that was going on in Evangelion, and it certainly wasnt blunt because it was all made very clear that this was all but SHinji's mental journey.

By standards of, my apologies for the cliche, action packed and "Big-Bangedness". It did have impact upon the original series, however, the flash aspect of it made it seem short and somewhat shallow. What I mean by that is that I watched the ending with everyone applauding and then it cut out........ I thought that wasn't the end, but it was. It just seemed like they ended the original on kind of a random interval.

@Rockreaper: The anime series wasn't just about the Eva's and the Angels. The original story's ending was very climactic and had great depth in it because the story was more based on Shinji's mental journey and the mental instability of the human teenager and how these traumatic events surrounding the EVA's and thier dark impacts on the main charectors. So the original ending was climatic and had grea depth in it because it didn't just focus on the Evas and the angels but more about Shinji finally recognizing his role in existing. It was a very touching ending, not violentc or flashy like most animes would finish off. :/

Ok,l et's see what I can come up with, as I have a difficult time with anime that go into human psyche... I have yrouble understanding them. Ah well, guess I'm more into "entertainment" anime than "let's anylise the human brains" anime...

Ok, so first and foremost, yes this was never a Gundam like anime, as the AT field is meant to seperate humans from one another (I understood that only because the 18th angel, whatshisname, Kaoru?) stated that. So ok, humans use the AT field as defence to set their minds away from others, as they fear intrusion. Yay. Now question 1: why do angels have AT fields also?

Ok, this was the first question, now for the neext thought: Asuka had a bad time with her Eva unit as she lost her... what? will to fight? To show off? Because Shinji bested her. Yay. But that wasn't even the theme of the story, the theme was exploration into the human psyce and analising the problematism of loneliness (mental one, as in setting yourself apart from other humans due to severe mental problems (Shinji was an idiot for the whole series. Yay)). So questiong 2: what is Asuka's loss of will to fight (I'll be refering to it as such since it's easiest to understand) has to do with the entire series?

I haven't had any sleep for the last two days, sorry if I wrote something badly...

Angel's have AT fields also because they are living beings with a mind and soul just like humans. And AT field is the light of the souls. As stated by Kaworu. But the thing is...the Angel's know the true meaning behind the AT fields and humans only think its some defence weapon.

Asuka's loss of "will to fight/ show off" is symbolic of the typical young people who were sucessful all their lives, and have met their first obstacle. and its a natural reaction for them to dont know what to do, and give up.

Evangelion goes into all sorts of different people's minds....outgoing people, selfless people, hypocritical people, people who like to show off, people who have big boobs....etc...
So Her loss of will is a part of the theme of exploration into the nature of human mentality~ XD

Ah, I know what you mean about people who were sucessful and then met tehir first obstacle... Me, for example. Good thing I have them great friend who not only saved me from depression (actually WAS under a severe attack of depression for a month or two), so now I'm slowly returning to my old self... Asuka needs Shinji to do :| with her, then she'll become great once again (XD couldn't resist, sorry...). Asuka needs to get friendlier (as in friends, real friends) with Shinji, then they can help each other.

So basically, NGE follows Shinji's growth from a child incapable of acting on his own (he couldn't even refuse to continue piloting the Evas...), to someone capable of accepting the lies humans tell themselves... ok. But, what I just can't get is his father's role. That dude is a hypocrite, worries more about something he made by himself (Rei), than about his son... so why did he drag the whole world into his desire to die along his wife?

You know how i said EVA critises the lives of Otaku (people who are obsessed with anime) teenagers?

The father role is here to criticise yet another issue in modern Japanese society: the Father-son relationship... Shinji's relationship with his dad is just an exaggerated version of the problems with communication and mutual understanding that's occurring in families between the father and the son. Similarly with daughters and their mother.

Rei was a clone of Yui with the soul of Lilith embedded in her.
So Rei is almost the "rebirth" of his wife....and his ideal daughter. Because in ep 20, we hear his dad say "if it's a boy, Shinji. If its a girl, we'll call her Rei".

He doesn't want to die with his wife in 3rd impact. His original plans were that all humans will become one single being...all death and alive people's souls will be together...thus he wants to have some sort of wierd "reunion" with Yui, through the merging of all humans...

So what if it was made without budget? And if it was ture, so what if there was no intended storyline? The fact remains that a plot and meaning has reached an audience, whether it was intended or not.
Thus since the series' material allows people to analyse, it is material that is legitimately interpretable and has a level of depth that can be viewed, whether or not the creator originally intended it or not. Therefore your statement about over-analysing a piece of work is untrue.

It doesn't make us feel intelligent and it's not a dream to be intelligent just because we are analysing a piece of work that is meaningful to us.
On the contrary maybe it just makes those who are not picking up what we're seeing quite easily feel stupid. What we've done so far is far from what is called "analysis".

its a typical issue, its not onl in japan...i dont think~ let me brief you on it:

Some dads in japan are so hard on their sons (sons not daughters because they dont hav a penis) to the extent that the son hates the father, and sets out to prove himself somehow. The father who loves the son doesn't reveal his true feelings in fear of son slacking off.
Hence we got the Shinji-Gendo relationship.

Another one is:
Fathers are sometimes so work obsessed that they neglect their wives and daughter....and work work work work ~
Thus the daughter hates the dad for hurting mum's feelings.
Hence...the Misato- dad relationship

Lastly...there is the typical cases where The family is good....until one day...someone dies (mum...or dad)...then the normally dependant kid goes and turns around "I'm not gonna cry anymore!!!!" and turn into a complete adult....thus hating any new members of the family who come in (step-mums...etc)
and the memories of their parents' death remain a scar there, and they bury it in a spasm of energy and *****.
Thus u got Asuka- mother relationship.

You know, with every action, there is an equal and opposite (in this case powerful) reaction.

And my favorite episode is 12 when Kotori dies. Not to sound masochistic or anything, but she's probably my favorite character (And I'm probably the only one who thinks so), and that episode defines her. I also loved the last 3 episodes with the Arashi x Sorata arc. Plus it was just..epic. XD

I can't WAIT until the manga series ends. I just hope they do right by it (and decide how the hell they want it to end) instead of leading us on (with the movie and the anime..). =(

i didn't like the movie at all, but found the series very unique and overall good. Clamp almost always has excellent work, and this is one of my favorites. If you are interested, watch/read the movie/series/manga they all end differently, and have far branching stories (or will when the manga is finished)

Did Gendo intend to use a Rei-clone in the dummy plug to initiate instrumentality?
Actually I've never went into details about this particular concept....although i watched it 44 times....I never really talked about the dummy plug much except for its practical uses....

Let me watch some snippets before I answer you~

I don't think the dummy plug was anything to do with instrumentality...except for its role in preserving Rei FOR the instrumentality...

Dummy plug was invented to provide Rei with an infinite amount of bodies, so that if she dies, she her soul and memory can be tranferred into a new body. This is because Rei is THE key of gendo's plan to reunited with Yui through instrumentality.
Dummy plug was also used to provide "fake date" of the human ego...to "trick" the EVA into believing that there is a pilot in there.
And they used Rei's personality data which is the most convenient (since she'll just do what u say).

The dummy plug (the core actually) has been referred to as "the room of Guf" by Ritsuko. A biblical reference to the room where souls are kept. Ritsuko says "The room of Guf is empty". So saying...there are no more souls for more people (rei's) to be born...therefore all these naked rei bodies can go to hell rawwwrrr!!!!

I think the dummy plug is one of the more science fictional things in EVA~ and less symbolic and complicated than the others. Anno just put in the Room of Guf thing to foreshadow The End Of Evangelion I think....since souls were collected back and room of guf is filled up again and etc etc~ XD

remember that this is only my prespective...I might not be right on this one....and if i AM right...manyyy other interpretations may be right too~

Wow Eureka seveN has to be one of my favorites if not my favorite, duh bleach, Naruto, dbz nice fighting early stuff though, evangelion, and Cowboy bebop. For all of those who said one piece may God have mercy on your souls for that was the worst show i've ever seen.

i just wached Seed in on siting! starting to wach seed destiny now, but wing was best i was amazed, the only thing is that flley, i hate her!

but its very vell made, good story, good characters. its a good anime.

i watched them both quite a while ago but still one of my favorite mecha series behind eva i just liked that it was all about fighting racism and such good plot and charecters. also liked the art not as repetitive with scenes as gundam wing.
has any1 else seen the extra episode for seed destiny what did you think.
looking forward to the movie although i'm annoyed that it is different charecters again.

Kira in Seed Destiny is way better than that of Seed, he didnt cry as much, actually i dont think he cried at all, Shinn kinda took his place there. Wing is horrible, and both series had repetitive action scenes, I guess it is a good way to save money haa.

I watched both Seed and Destiny and I think that they are both great series. I have a couple comments to make in defense of the characters in Destiny:
I think that Shinn is not exactly a character substitute for Kira but rather a Dilandau manipulated puppet that was supposed to replace Kira in his Destiny plan. Kinda like Meer was supposed to be Lacus and Rey was supposed to be Rau and Lunamaria was a substitute for Athrun.
If you look at all the main characters in Destiny they have an alternate in Seeds main characters that has kinda the same role. Neo and Mu la Fraga are also two sides to the same person in Destiny hell even the Minerva is a wannabe Archangel. I felt that Destiny was all about easy replacements for something real.

Anime: Gunbuster: Top O Nerae!
Genre: Mecha, Sci-fi, Drama
Vintage: 1988

Earth is on it's last legs, fighting a war with an alien species that posesses superior fighting power, but humanity refuses to give up (naturally). Fighting robots with young pilots are the frontline fighters and the pilot training program is part of the highschool cirruiculum. Enter Noriko Takaya, daughter of a famous Space Captain and freshman class klutz and Kasumi Amano, the piloting genius of the senior class. So begins humanity's last struggle for survival in the universe.

This is a benchmark anime by Studio Gainax that preceded the popular Evangelion series. Noriko is not your typical Gundam pilot 'i'm good at this because i'm the main character' deal, we see how hard it is for her to become a pilot and believe in herself. The serious tone of the story is offset a little by the 'well endowed' female characters and the famous 'bath scene' but the reality of the situation never lets up. There are even short 'science lessons' to explain the mechanics of light speed travel, warping, black holes, and the aliens they are fighting. So much is packed into this 6 part OAV series that it is a must see for any mecha anime fan, over 14 for the 'bath scene.'

The animation might not be all crispy CG for you newbies and the last episode is in Black and White but I guarantee that you will not care about the color. The music is absolutely beautiful and composed by Kohei Tanaka of One Piece, Gundam 08th MS and Sakura Taisen fame.
