OK, I have wonderd for a long time, what the exact point of Sport Video games are. Like (English) football games, Cricket Games, American Football Games. If you love the sport you do, then why do you need to sit at a controler pressing buttons to play it instead of going out there and spending less money on acutaly playing it?
Note: I am refering to sport simulation games. And these are sports that your average joe could play, not like Raceing games. Nor am I talking about things like Mario Tennis. Also this thread is NOT for insulting or flaming those who like sport video games. If you like them, good for you!
Anyway, what are the main resons that people play sport video games instead of going out and playing it themselves? Why do people like these sorts of games?

to tell the truth, the only reason i see for sport videogames is so that a person with absolutely no sport skill can still play a version of the sport without having to be good at it.

True I sopose. Would you say that sport games are for either;
1: The Lazy people who can't be botherd to play the real thing.
2: Unskilled people who can't play it well in r/l
3: Other people who might just want to see how well it compares to r/l.

I guess sports games are ok, I have actually enjoyed a few football games. I suck at just about any sport IRL, and could never really enjoy them, yet I enjoy some of them in video game form.
I guess its just the medium.

BO Revenge was great, and i play almost no raving games, but i play RPGs and stuff like that, so sports game arent my cup of tea
GAmes are ment to enjoy ppl its just that plain and simple ;)
cuz they wont make games to convince someone to act the thing they want you to do lol otherwise i can simply ask: What is the piont of a Role playing game?

The point of an RPG? To kill time, actually. Most rpgs have deep storylines and plots, which makes you think, and opens your mind. o.O And also, to give people with no signifigance whatsoever a chance to save the world and/or universe, and feel important. >.>
Sports games? Can you picture a football fanatic sitting down, playing pokemon? Maybe.. But most likely no.. As for me, I'm more of a hack'n'slash and rpg kinda guy.
And whats the point of games based on movies that are based on comics? You just blew off 20 bucks to see the damn thing, why blow off 50 more to see it again? Not to mention the 100s of dollars you spent buying the comics(if you're into that sorta thing). And most of the time, the games suck ***!

Games are made to sell, so if people continue to play them, they will continue to be made, thats their point.

U know games are kinnda good unless they become addictive like bleach and take all of your time

@Dread:Not rly...u either have hand eye or not...games just make u focus them...
As t the sports games, i play a few just to have something to play with other ppl. If i have friends over i cant have them playing fable or any of the rpgs, most action games too, with me...so i keep a few sports games around so that i can beat the living crap out of them in a game of football. It also is a good break from Halo and that shit 24/7.

I've never really liked sport games.. except for football, because then you get to tackle ppl.. so I don't know what the point is.. Money?, maybe..
well yea, i guess its basically for money... i mean, its good for the people who love the sport but for the producers im guessing its basically for the money

Not just for money, it's for people who specialises in these things instead of sales marketing and such. I think sports games also let people express themselves, ALSO entertaining others at the same time :D It brings the competitiveness out of everyone
lol You got an answer anyway, 7D$.. >_>
XD i noticed lmao

some people are not really gifted with skills to excel in sports....while some others are naturallg gifted...thats why there are good athletes with awesome skills...talent plus practice made them like that....anyway, back to the topic...some people are not naturally gifted with atheletic skills, and yet they have passion for that game...and so some resort to that kind of videogames so they could get the feel of what it is like to play the game...
or some people play it because they like that game...for instance, im very interested in watching NBA..and so aside from watching it on tv..or live..i also play NBA live(in ps2) because i like NBA...XD

Not exactly. I used to play sports game like NBA Live. But in real life I represent my school in the basketball team. I play NBA Live probably because sometimes I'm just lazy to go out and play. Also, I play it with some of my friends who can't play basketball well.
Another thing is probably because it is fun. It does brings us excitement when the game is ending and we are competing to win. This is usually seen in competitions, but I don't have competitions to play 24/7. Plus, I learned some of my techniques from the game players itself

To put it simply.let's just say you get injured and you can't play the game u like to play, then you can play a video game of it.lol.that way you still can play it, or you can just do it while your bored on a rainy day.

video sports games are another form of the old electronic chess games.
you just substitute the chess pieces for the sports teams and reduce the choice times to immediate and increase the possible moves.
people want to be able to pit two groups against each other to see if they can beat an opponent be it computer generated or another player yet chess just doesn't apeal to the modern kids.

I think that the point of sport games is so that the people who can't play well can enjoy the game, and the people that CAN play well can learn when they play. Also, PEOPLE NEED MONEY! and by selling these types of games, it can get fans to buy it, and the producers will earn money.
GAmes are ment to enjoy ppl its just that plain and simple ;)

(I do watch it on tv though :)) the games are just fun i guess, thats why i play them

This thread is slowly turning out to be a chat spam one. Please refrain from such actions if you do not want to be warned. Thank you :).
As to my opinion regarding this matter, I think that such games give the player a satisfaction that they can't get when physically playing the game. I mean its like meeting your favourite superstars in the game and performing all their signature moves without actually having to see them in reality. Some sports games allow the player to experience them virtually in areas where they aren't of public interest. Snowboarding for example is not popular in the Gulf, mainly because people there don't have snow all year, so they aren't really aware of the joy the sport brings :).
P.S. I don't like sport games btw :P.
EDIT: You know I just realized... Its quite similar to why people enjoy watching sports and may not enjoy playing the sport itself physically.

OK, in real life I hate skating. i find it incredebly lame and stupid. (No offense)
But I freaking love the Tony Hawk series for playstation.
I think the point of these games are to let people be able to do stuff they couldn't do in reality. Like me skating.

You don't always have the weather or say the time or people to get together 20 people to play a game of football, or even the physical ability. Others maybe don't want to get hurt in more dangerous sports like boxing or UFC. Other people like to immitate their heroes in any way possible, video games included. Others just find the strategy and challenge involved in a sports game to be fun. There's lots of reasons to play sports games and if you actually like the sport, they can be addictive.
