Everywhere, the world is full of conventions :
- Women MUST wax their legs.
- Men MUSN't wear dresses without being considerated as gay (wich is not something bad, but if it's false...).
- You MUST be "normal" (wearing normal clothes, having a normal face, normal interests...
- Etc...
If you are not conventionnal, people think that you're a weirdo.
If women HAVE to wax their legs, why dare men musn't do it ?! Don't we have equal rights ?! The same for dresses... It's quite beautiful, so why can't men wear it ? Woman can wear pants, isn't it ? I really think that conventions sucks.
But what about you ? Do you think conventions are good ?

Believe me it used to be a lot worse. In the past, even as recently as the 40's or early 50's, everyone dressed pretty much the same, and there was immense peer pressure to do so.
Today we have a belief in individualism, and many people choose to adopt their own style...

In my opinion, everyone has their own individualism and should be able to express it in any way they feel like. The only thing is, is that people are discriminative when they see something which isn't "normal". But what is exactly "normal"?
Some conventions aren't as responded to as others are. For example, waxing your legs might not be as 'strongly responded' as wearing a skirt (for men). Not to mention that in Scotland, men do wear kilts, which resemble skirts in a way...
imagine a world where creationists feared true, hairy woman who looked like sapiens more than homo sapiens, hairy men who looked like baboons, woman who smoke more crack than men, men who wears gothic tresses to your house party, chicks no longer loving to love men, instead, their started loving beastiality, we started humping in farms and openly on the street, people no longer going to banks to work on weekdays, but instead it is open on a sunday, when everyone else is working till late and no one ever visits the bank.
Oh my? Individuality is overated, the only good thing to apply it is fashion sense, and design sense, to apply it over things so trivial as the first post mentioned is only.... ignorance of the greater good.

I don't think that it's bad to do it, but I think that if WOMEN have to do it, MEN should too !
I don't mean to inverse, cause it would be another world with other conventions. I just want conventions to dissapear. People should do these stuffs because they want to, not because the others want to.

i agree with devildude, these convensions are there for a reason, its to stop the world turning screwed up completly, this world does allow for individuality, just not stupidity. People can do what they like, its what we consider morally correct that stops it from becoming chaotically disturbed. Its what differs us from animals.
well, as far as I know, there is actually very little of that trivial matter that mattered, I mean, would people view you lesser if you are hairy? I have pals who loved hairy girls, and of course, I prefer my leg hair to be there, no one is forcing girls to shave, I just don't like it.

indeed its just what is considered morally correct in the average society

Of course conventions appear everywhere we go but as to what is conventional varies in every country. Indeed it was far worse in the past and it's good that we live in this time of day even though we still have conventions. People should accept you for who you are but sometimes we just have to be culturally sensitive when we go to other countries

I really hate convensions, that's y I'm an anarchist ^^ I think today we cannot expect 2 have any convensions, seeing how the world is becoming connected, and how it would b crazy 2 expect everyone 2 follow same rules, while under so diferent circunstances.

the reason so many rules of conduct exist beyond the actual laws is because its human nature to want a certain level of security in their lives.
conformity gives the illusion of security.
for you because you fit in and for the other because they show a level of following the rules making them approachable/trustworthy (this is why the biggest thieves wear suits) an old lady is far more likely to cross the street if she See's a guy with very long hair and dirty clothing than she would a man in a suit but between the two the suit might con her of all her savings when the long hair will maybe ask for some change.

i agree with your 'old lady' thing, because people judge others from what they wear, or how they look, its just natural. If a person wears something ugly, you might think 'whoa, that guy's poor!' even if you don't know them. They might be rich, but humans naturally judge others from their appearance.

Imo.. You don't have to do it, wax your legs.. If you can live with ppl calling you weirdo. It does suck. The world can be pretty sick..

lol. thats kinda funny. neways...
think about what your saying. everything is free. u do have the right to dress however u want. and yes ppl might think your weird. but thats because they are free to think like that. personally, my friend *who is a guy*, waxes his legs. and thats cool. of course, we're metro. but that just means i understand this subject even more. lol. when some1 says theyre gay, ppl look at them and say, "Oh, well i have to accept that" but when they hear I'm metro they look at me worse than if i wore a dress. and since I am on this metro subject, if a guy did wear a dress, he has no fashion sense at all. Why do you want to wear a dress in the first place? or is it just the principle of the matter?
No one knows what normal is, no one knows what unnormal is.
ppl cant draw a line and say this is normal and that TOTALLY doesnt hehe thats impossible since in other countries they have different cultures, norms and values so it would be differnt in each and other place T_T' so thats crap. Those convension is a C$%#& A&# W^#%@ if you ask me cuz PPl should do what ever they want ^^

I'm a woman, but I don't wax my legs. It hurts. It's horrible. I did it only once in my life and I don't want to do it ever again.

I don't think that people should do whatever they want, because (and i mean no offence) a lot of people are stupid. Conventions do suck, but they are a part of human nature, so there isn't much to be done about them as a whole. We can change some of them, for example just ten years ago facial piercings and tattoos were unacceptable by "normal" people, now however they are considered a norm by many, of course i can only say this on behalf of my community. Anywho, i agree with dragoneyes that conventions have to do with people's personal comfort level.
Oh and i'd like to say that i wish guys did shave or wax ... i'm not a big fan of body hair.
I know the feeling...I'm what many consider a "freak" or "weirdo"...
But, I express myself as an individual, not as somoeone else. This isn't even thinking for yourself. Peer pressure shouldn't matter...unless you really care, but then that's not good either.

There are some conventions like why women dressing like men is alright (like in a suit) and men in a skirt is not acceptable, but this is just one of the very odd ones.
Conventions are there for a reason and many has a purposeful reason, for example:why do u have to pee in the toilet and that kinda stuff and not like a dog? Conventions are mostly purposeful, for example:be polite to other people. ¬Most¬ has a reason behind it and mostly purposeful but some are rather useless and a nonsense.
Why do you have to wear clothes when you walk on the street? it is not a convention, it is just that because everyone is doing and they think that it is right and what other people should do, in a way this is peer pressure on other people around them. The peer pressure makes them want to be "normal" and be like others around them so they dont stand out and look as if they are "weird".
:D Then of course with the convention that you dont pee on the rug is that because then you dont make the room stink and that you dont have to clean up after.

Meh, I ceised to care what others think after I lost friends and Girl friends over it. I play tons of video games, watch tons of anime, dress sloppy, have sloppy hair, swear when I want, ect, ect.
I think everyone needs to just chill and talk to ppl, insted of worrying so much about everything.

I have never been to a convention before but i plan on going to one and dress up as Yuuna. I heard that there are guys wearing Sailor Moon outfits and there are old geezers in short shorts. In a way conventions sounds very disturbing, but i still want to go!
