Real Player and Windows Media work perfectly fine when I watch MPEG files. However when I watch avi files, for some reason it doesn't work - as in the error report thing comes up.

I tried downloading some codecs but it doesn't seem to affect anything. I'm not sure how long this has occured for, but last week avi files worked relatively fine.

Can anyone help?

have you tried winamp to play .AVI's?

real player has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.....<<<this error?

LMAO finally opened the program to check what might be your problem and got the same error message because I cut off real players ability to connect to the net.(the second my firewall cut it off the error occured)
looks like their built in spy-ware doesn't like us telling them to piss off!
now for a different problem what to do with this ladybug that's walking on my keyboard?its making typing difficult

Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

^^That's the message thing that comes up.

Edit:

So I installed Winamp, and still no difference. Winamp just shuts down automatically. I've also tried windows media classic, and still no progress. ):

You probably have some corrupt codecs on your computer. I don't have any problems whatsoever, if AVI files crash on every player you try, then its most likely a codec error. I suggest you uninstall every video codec and update them with the latest version.

Ah well.. I've used windows Media player for .avi files before, but I found that VLC media player works just fine, so I'm using that now..

Edit: After using windows media player for a while i got the same error message, then I switched to VLC media player. Btw VLC media player is free.

Thanks guys, I'll try those out.

Edit:

Omg, N0s! I really do love you.

Thanks heaps. Really.

Turns out VLC media Player works. I'm still worried about what's up with Real Player and Windows Media, but I can live now. :D

Cheers again.

Edit 2:

I tried an avi file with Windows Media and Real Player and now they seem to be working fine now. Hallelujah for VLC. Thanks again.

If you prefer WMP, perhaps the problem was with the codecs... Here you can find all the codecs that have been released:

sounds like VLC loaded the new codecs already.

whenever you install a new player it comes with its own default codecs on some players they will replace any similar codecs with their own this would explain the other players working again.
