Currently attending San Diego State University. I'm a senior (4th year) majoring in Electrical Engineering (computer hardware emphasis), and will be graduating next spring.

For my freshman year, I went to Auburn University in Alabama. I kinda wanted to stay there, but circumstances didn't allow it =\

i guess i'm the only one at SUNY Purchase then... *sigh* i see you are about to attend a high school... don't worry... it'll go by ... kinda slow... but the pace will pick up by junior year... don't slack off until your a senior... and don't let those seniors push you around.... cuz they probably won't anyway but whatever...

those of you about to attend college... don't mess up your first year... and don't drink yourselves silly... there's nothing sexy or cool about it... and if your dorming... pray to whoever you pray that you don't end up with a barfing 4 foot tall chick whose always askin for a cigarette and can't stop drinking and throwing up on the chairs... in the dorm.... and hope she doesn't call herself crack monkey.... oh good lord what a horrible experience that was (for my friend.. hah! cuz i don't dorm! mmmm the feel of my own bed... so great..) and good luck to all!! it's kinda fun when your not with crappy ppl!

I'm a freshman down here at The Univiersity of New Mexico, Albuquerque and i'm unofficially an Archeaology Major, because i can't enter the college of Arts and Sciences until my second semester sophmore year. it's a weird rule that is in the books down here. But this is our little secret, okay, i've already specialized my brain for being an Archeaologist. Secondly dorms are cool you should see what type of benefits you get with them here there are a lot of benefits to living in dorms, and besides i can just roll out of bed and be to any of my classes in five minutes. The dorms also gave me a good springboard for meeting new friends. Since i'm a non-res as far as UNM is concerned so i needed to gain a new pool of friends completely. i'm in for at least 12-13 years of school to become a good Archeaologist, so i'm in for the long haul to all the people out there about to graduate this year congradulations and good luck in the working world.

Since I don't know what I want to do career-wise, I'm not sure what college I want to go to :/ But someone has reccommended The Naval Academy, West Point, etc. to me since they are good schools I could study at.
I'm thinking of either pursuing a career in writing or psychology. For like 8 years I wanted to study Veterinary medicine, but I changed my mind.

Right, the person mentioned West Point, The Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy.
And I could do service in another way besides fighting, plus they would pay for my college (correct?) which is why I'm interested.
I think I'd do writing more as a hobby than do it as a career.

not everyone is meant for engineering. That's why the engineer drop out rate is so high...so many people that have no business being in there are taking it. Heads up to all you freshies/HS seniors - if you suck at or hate math, critical thinking, physical sciences, and ambiguous concepts, save yourself the trouble and don't go into engineering.

Me...I'm going into the engineering field. Either pharmecutical or water filtration. *shrugs*

hmmm...those don't sound like fields that utilize engineers. Unless you're going into something like Industrial Engineering...which is business management with a fancy name...or Environmental Engineering...which is a fancy name for geography...

i've seen reports that engineers get a pretty good salary...so don't know why they would leave for money.
Work load...Oh I can definitly understand that. LOL *looks at the stack of books he has to go through this weekend*

Engineers make 30k starting and up. The higher demand engineering fields like computer/electrical (my field), aerospace, civil make much more. Chemical starts at 50k average. Computer/electrical are 45k starting average. That easily rises after the probation period/entry level. AFter studying engineering for 4 years now, I notice that people definitely leave because of the work load. It's funny though...they don't leave because the can't handle it - they leave because they didn't put enough effort into handling it. In my VHDL and embedded systems programming class, only half the class shows up for regular class time. The other half shows up only during tests and wonder why they fail so badly. People that are in engineering need to realize that it's heavy workload and will require large sacrifices. It could even mean you won't have much of a social life outside of classes. But that's how it is. :rolleye09

BTW Bastaldo...I saw your sig with bankaibeauty. She's my friend in real life...i just saw her tonght. :redbiggri

Nichigosan, the average starting salary of a Civil Engineer I is about 50k, which is pretty decent. I do think Civil/Structual Engineers get paid the most though. The mean salary of a Civil Engineer V(10 year experience) is about 100k according to salary.com. Considering you only need a Bs to work as an engineer, it's a damn good career choice.

I've seen Chemical get the most actually...and chemical is one of the most brutal on work loads. That's why, in my school at least, we dont have many Che's. I doubt a lot of people want to take 3-4 classes in organic chemistry and another 3-4 in heat transfer. lol

Well, I don't think I "suck at or hate math, critical thinking, physical sciences, and ambiguous concepts," I just don't want to have a career in engineering. That's a very generous estimation. I know a few professional engineers (including my dad who has a BS in Electrical and an MS in Computer), and the average is lower than that. Civil isn't as high as electrical, computer, or chemical because it's not as in demand as the others. The biggest engineering department in most schools is CIvil....because it's easier to understand and the work load is less than comp, elec, or chemical. I've taken a few civil eng courses for engineering electives, and I breezed over all of them. The concepts are so visual...not like electrical - what i'm taking now. it's harder to visualize electrons propagating through a transistor than to visualize the effective forces on a skyscraper.

I have to agree with him. Most of those "Starting Salariers" u c are just what they project MIGHT be in the future. Normally what really happens is those numbers tend to be off. I'm still trying to deciede if that is because they try to con people into engineering or not. *shrugs* Us Digital Media Majors actually have a kickass starting salary, but noooooo. Noone ever notices us...

The salary really depends on the employer. My uncle is a structual engineer and his company doesn't take anyone that doesn't have a Ms into senior engineering.

Like I said before...that's cuz they're not in demand. Electrical, Computer, and chemical get hired once they graduate. I have an internship last summer with a government defense contractor that said they'll hire me once I get out. I believe them too, cuz they just hired a computer engineer friend of mine that just graduated at the beginning of this year.

Yeah, it does depend on the employer, but i'm talking about averages. :musak:

Never considered it in my life. I can't stand seeing people bleed. I did consider going to veterinary school though. For some weird reason, I can sit with a dog getting operated on (I used to work at a vet), but i can't do it for humans.

if your considering medical school.. also consider how long you have to go to school for... it's a very very long time... hence why i gave up trying to be a Psychiatrist... too much medical schooling.. and i wouldn't trust me with medications or surgeries... i'm waaaayyy too clumsy... so also take things like that into consideration... not the clumsiness part... but the life of a person or medication to give out and stuff... but good luck to you!

I can relate. I can remember just yesterday walking in to high school on orientation day, being the newbie freshman and now in afew months I'm going to start school as a sophomore, and in a few years my now sophomore friends will start college, then I'll start college, then my sister will graduate college.... x.x I'd feel a bit more secure though if I actually knew what I wanted to do with my life.
My friend wants to be an engineer, maybe I should reccomend some of the colleges you guys go to. But first I should ask what kind of engineer he plans to be.

Its a two year program with a parcticum at the end of it. But it's only a two month one so not to long. But I think after I finish this major I would like to pick up the courses needed to also have the English Horsmanship major as well. I can get my Level 1 Coaching through that. Then that would be only maybe one - one and a half more years.

What career path did you take and why did you choose it? Do you like it? And how is it financially rewarding to you in the future in general and individually for yourself?

- I'm currently majoring in the Dental Technology, as it is a medical field, I believe it will benefit me as the vast population of baby boomers now passing the age of 65, I believe this will be one of the areas to benefit from it, as how there will be greater demands for dentures and other dental needs.

-Also there is a great demand for dental technicians as there are some work being sent overseas due to the shortage.

-I also find it very fun and rewarding because of the work involved in making teeth, it is also in some ways an art and I find it very enjoyable.

While I am in college, I also train pretty extensively in martial arts and would like to become a mixed martial arts fighter, or open my own martial arts school when I get older. I don't really enjoy school in general, so it's not fun for me working for this degree, but I need it so I have to.

As of right now I'm a Psychology major as I've mentioned in passing quite a few times. And while I'll most likely stick with Psych as my major and end up getting a job in clinical psychology I'd much rather be writing. I'll most likely go for my doctorate's in either major I stick with so I can teach on a campus and still have time for my writing either way.

I'm a "Pre-Accounting" Major with plans on changing it but I'm not sure what to change it too. I go to Kent State University one of the branches.
