View Full Version : Bleach Dub Cast Announced

The English voice actors have been announced on Bleach Portal. Check it out now!
Edit: WTF the same actress is Rukia and Yuzu. I guess I'm going to still hate Orihime since she is being voiced by the annoying voice actress of Mamimi in FLCL.

sigh* i hate these dub versions.......
At first, I was skeptic that this would be an anime gone wrong thanks to America. But man am I impressed. They actually got Vash to do Ichigo =D I'm suprised about Orihime's, because I never pictured her with that kind of voice that that Seyuii(sp?) is famouse for. Everyone else looks pretty good, but I have no other major comments... I can't wait =D

Holy NO.
Rukia's VA is the ***** that voiced SOPHIA from Star Ocean: TTEOT!?!?!
There are bad things, there are unholy things and then there's Michelle Ruff.
I'm going to cry.
They snagged Wendee Lee for Tatsuki. Tatsuki's pwn. But she isn't the LEADING CHARACTER. =O Wendee Lee would've made a great Rukia, in my opinion. Her voice is deep enough, while Miss ****ingcowboybebopcashier voiced Dubby!Chii. Yeah. 'Cause we ALL know Rukia should sound like Chii. Viz needs to BURN. I'm not even sure if Viz is the company dubbing it, and I don't care; a few of the VAs are pretty good (like Ichigo's), but I'll be whining about Rukia for a while. ;_;
Whew good cast. And the guy from Power Rwngers is Ichigo's VO

I like Ichigos voice actor. The one that worries me the most is Isshins VA, cuz hes not in hardly anything that ive seen, exept for a badguyy in hellsing and from that he doesnt seem to fit well. Plus i mean if they screw Isshin up that woulf just ruin the whole dub for me.

Johnny Yong Bosch doing Ichigo makes me sad, because Johnny is a flaming enormous asshole with an ego far larger than mine.
Seriously, the guy acts like he's god's gift to mankind, even though he's just a petty VOICE ACTOR. In fact, he acts like he's better than the other VAs from what I hear.
Ah well, beats having Richard Cox as Ichigo, eh?
Also, there's no official voices for the other characters yet. Vic Mig(...god I forgot how to spell his name. Micogna? Micnogna?) DOES voice Hitsugaya I'd laugh my ass off. I'd sooner see him voice Kon (seriously, spazz out Dub Ed Elric's voice a bit and you got a killer Kon)

Hello! :)
I feel rather confident that this will turn out to be a solid dub. Now as to the VA for Isshin I have heard him in a longer part. He was in R.O.D. The TV as the agent for the writer. I can tell you that he can deliver a very good performance. So I am not worried. Look into R.O.D. to hear him. I am looking forward to seeing who else gets a part.

Woah. I just read this right now (aaagh! Why didn't I check earlier?!).
I'm not sure what all the voices sound like, but it seems that the overall product may turn out better than is expected. (Well, no matter how good or bad the dubbed edition will turn out, I'm still going to stick with the raw version.)
+KuSaKaBe+
07-23-2006, 02:52 PM
The VA cast is pretty good, although I wish that Wendee Lee did the voice of Rukia though it's fine that shes doing Tatsuki. The dub is going to be pretty good I'm guessing.

ANGER.
I think I JINXED it.
I told my friend the other day "I don't care who they get, as long as they don't get Johnny for Ichigo"
SO who do they get?
JOHNNY.
Johnny can't change his voice!
Vash sounds the same as Renton!!!!!!
I liked him as Vash, but Vash =/= Ichigo.
Not. At. All.
AiddonValentine
07-23-2006, 03:05 PM
The only actor I'm skeptical about is Isshin's, but I liked the Hellsing dub so I'll see what he can do. Particularly I think Bosch was a bit unexpected for Ichigo, but Vash could get pretty pissed off plus Bosch can do other voices (Kiba from Wolf's Rain for example).
Michelle Ruff as Rukia was a bit of a surprise, but Ruff also has a lot of roles under her belt so she has tons of experience. Particularly one voice of hers that would fit Rukia is Miranda from Grandia 3 who had a personality almost exactly like Rukia's. Stephanie Sheh as Orihime is a surprise since she's done more staff work than voice acting, though I think her Alfina voice from Grandia 3 would fit well with Orihime. Wendee Lee as Tatsuki should be simple for her, though I wish she'd get a bigger role such as Rangiku or Yoruichi. If she just does Black Rose from .hack she should be fine.
Now Ishida surprised the living hell out of me. This is Keitaro from Love Hina, the man who got the Naru-punch hundreds of times! However, he does have experience and has done some less goofbally roles before plus most characters in Bleach have both a serious and a really weird side to them so I don't have any anxiety from that casting decision anymore.

i cant imagine them in English... no offense but BIG SUB fan here!!!!!! dub only kills the anime.....
yeah it does, well maybe johnny will do as good of a job on as he did with trigun.
Amen to that! I'm a little afraid of his latest work doing Renton, but Vash ftw! As for Rukia, I've never seen that VA's work, so I wouldn't know...
The guy who's Kurasaki Ichigo who also played Renton is meh =\ They really messed up Eureka SeveN with the dubs. And The girl who played Talho/Sakura sucked badly....

Only time i've ever been completely satisfied with the english dub was with DBZ and Cowboy Bebop (Superb!). I don't know about getting the black ranger for Ichigo but he didn't do so bad on trigun. Let's just wait till september and see how he does, he might suprise us. Oh, and I just hope they change the soundtrack. the openings and closings are awesome but the in-show tracks really suck. (If you wanna see some action..gotta be the center OF ATRACTION!)
Shizor
07-23-2006, 06:22 PM
This is so weird.
Jonny was my favorite power ranger back in the day.
Anyways, from the demos of the VA's I listened too it seems like the english dub is shaping up to be better than I had expected.
Nicole

Naturally, it's all going to sound weird to us as we're used to the Japanese voices, as I'm sure many people have mentioned before...
I'll watch it and if I can't get used to it after a few episodes, when I normally get used to dubbed anime after watching subbed, then I won't watch it anymore.
Er... I would've liked to see either Wendee Lee or Kelly Sheridan (Hitomi from Escaflowne, Sango from Inuyasha) for Rukia and Richard Cox for Ichigo, but I guess that's how the cookie crumbles. =(

Really, people, to those who are freaking out over this,
It could be much worse, you know. A company like 4Kids could've gotten their paws on the anime and released it on toonami, Miguzi (whatever the name is or kids WB, edited the hell out of it, and made it a kiddie show.
I'm relieved it's being aired on Adult Swim, and on there, I doubt it's going to be edited out THAT much. Even if the voices may sound different.
gdo01
07-23-2006, 10:11 PM
How did this kill the anime? Gundam Seed somehow spawned a sequel despite the dub. Gundam Seed Destiny failed because it couln't keep up with the ratings that Gundam Seed and FMA had racked up. Zatch Bell was on Cartoon Network which had to edit stuff out.
Many of the animes I watch now, I had first seen dubbed then I seeked out the originals. All the animes that Adult Swim has shown have not had much of a difference between the originals and dub especially their work with later animes like FLCL and Paranoia Agent. Those two were very faithful to their original work and I even prefered Haruko's voice from the dub to the original.
One thing I will agree on is to abandon all hope once 4Kids, Fox Kids, or Nick gets the show.

07-23-2006, 10:45 PM
Yeah, leaving everything in subs is so elitist and dull. I particularly have respect for most of the dubbing companies, their staff, and voice actors. All the voice actors they've announced for the cast of Bleach thus far have quite a bit of experience as VA's and have done some good work in the past. Most of them also have wide voice ranges so it shouldn't be hard for them to get their characters. I usually withstand the first few episodes of a series if the dub isn't so good because their actors are just getting into their characters and need a bit of time to adapt.

07-23-2006, 10:56 PM
Johnny was fantastic as Kaneda in his version of Akira. But I really didn't care for him as Vash. Although I doubt if anyone could have been able to keep up with the pace set by the original actor. So, yeah, I'm pretty disappointed with their choice for Ichigo. I just don't think he'll be as badass as the original guy.
I'll admit some of the newer anime dubs are alot better than the ones they were making 8 or 10 years ago. (I'm a bit of an oldschool anime fan) But generally speaking, their acting could be a lot better. Look at the acting in some non-anime cartoons such as Batman and Spawn. As for the arguement that it's tough to match voices to lip movements: if you look closely at most japanese anime, they often don't even care to match voices to lip movements in their own shows!
Maybe I'm just really picky, but I don't see why all dubs can't strive to meet the standards set by performences like that of the Cowboy Bebop cast.
(p.s. yes I know Wendee Lee is in this too. She's a great actress. : D)
Sorry, I just noticed your post AiddonValentine, but I REALLY don't like the notion that perfering subs over dubs is elitist. This is not a personal attack, just something I've noticed in other anime forums. Maybe some jerk was lording his love of subs over people who liked dubs better. I don't know. But not everyone who like subs better act that way. I just don't want my right to only watch subs be stepped on by someone who likes dubs, that's all.
ok, i'll step down from my little soap box. :)

Preference of subs is one thing and I'll leave it at that, but completely condemning dubs is absolutely elitist. I'll admit I'll disregard any hope for a show if it gets licensed by 4Kids but I'll at least give it a try with companies such as Viz, Bandai, Geneon, Funimation, and ADV. Dubs nowadays are getting more liberal and as such are getting much better than back in the mid-nineties.
I'll wait and see with Bosch since he can do badass or at least hard-edged (I mean, Kaneda in Akira and Kiba in Wolf's Rain). I just think some fans are asking for far too much with dubs at times.

I see what you're saying now. Yeah, it's not really fair to say that all dubs must be bad because they are dubs, even before they are heard. Like, the Naruto dub was pretty well done in general. I also think it's safe to say that we will never see an anime get butchered the way One Piece was. That's gotta be way too costly for companies.
I guess I'm still pretty excited about Bleach getting released though. I only started to watch it recently and really got into it after they went to the Soul Society. I wonder who will play Gin and Renji?

I think of dubs as a fun little side-adventure, a novelty at best.
Subs are my mainstay, but I really do love dubs because I love to see how they stack up to the original.
Just me...I love to shock my system by inducing change. I better never get married ^.^

Also guys, you gotta realize that the first episode alone won't show how good or bad the dub will be (unless it's blatantly terrible). Ok we get your point, you don't like dubs. Thats all well and good but to keep on going on about it (and this includes all others who do too) is just plain annoying.
And for another point to people who say it kills the anime can you please explain in what way. It's not like the japanese writers just stop because the english dub was bad. It's not like the japanese people will stop watching it because the english dub is bad. And because you are so stuck on the concept that you hate the dub its not going to ruin your time watching the sub'ed version. So in what way possible could it kill it????
So in point, if you don't like dub's thats fine, just say it once then leave this thread because your post in here just become a waste of space and a waste of time for the people reading the fourm.

I mean no offense, but to those who have complained about dubs, I must ask this question:
have you done any of the following:
-worked on a play/movie
-attempted to make a dub of any anime/movie/etc. even a joke one
those who can say 'yes' to at least one of those things will understand why I personally don't whine about dubs (unless they are EXTREMELY bad, and i haven't seen many anime that bad since the days of AnimEigo)
gdo01
07-25-2006, 08:53 PM
Dubs have become increasingly better as time goes on. Have you guys seen the dubs for those 80s animes? Ugh!!
Anyway, completely ruling out dubs is in the long run is worse than anything dubs can do to an anime. If people stop watching dubs then there is no incentive to make dubs better. Eventually dubs stop being made, animes lose popularity with the average USA person, fansub groups decline due to no demand, and finally fansubs die except for hardcore otakus in the USA.
If it wasn't for dubs I would have never gotten into anime and I'm pretty sure most of you can relate with that. So by dismissing dubs you are killing any hope of anime keeping its popularity into the next generation.
AiddonValentine
07-25-2006, 09:53 PM
yeah, plus anime is a sub-culture and I say the more people who get into it the better. For a person to start out on fansubs is rare and not enough to keep a fanbase up. Casting aside dubs is just a half-assed way to sound cool or whatever; for the love of god people, we're nerds, so what's the point in sounding cool when by the majority we're considered weird????
chibo
07-25-2006, 10:36 PM
aiddonvalentine hits the nail right on the head. Casting aside dubs is a half assed way to look cool. Kids like to be part of something "underground" and if it ain't underground it aint kewl. hence when bleach is becoming dubbed it's no longer underground but mainstream. most younger people HATE mainstream...simple as that. the only way for english dubs to become better is with experienced VO's. If you had your way then english dubs would continue to trickle out and they would continue to have terrible VO actors. Use your head. quit trying to come off as cool and accept your just a geek/nerd trying to pose. embrace it and support a damned english dub that is trying to spread the greatness of Bleach across the U.S. and other countries....

Like, the Naruto dub was pretty well done in general.
You are a crazy, crazy person.
I like what I've heard of that Bosch guy or whatever his name is. He doesn't sound bad, and he seems like he can act, and apparently he can scream exactly like the Japanese actor who plays Ichigo, but he doesn't seemt to have a nearly deep-enough voice for the part.
We'll see.

Seriously though. Can anyone honestly say with a straight face that the Cowboy Bebop dub sucked? Or the Fullmetal Alchemist one? Hell, what about Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex's?
If any of you hate these, you'll pretty much hate all dubs on the grounds that they're dubs. It's stupid to not give -ANY- dubs credit. They really have improved over the years for the most part. I grew up watching Saban's butchering of DBZ, FUNimation's earlier dubs, and god knows what else. Aside from 4kids, almost every studio's made a vast improvement since those days. It's elitist to disregard dubs on the grounds that they're dubs. Particularly most of the Bleach cast who have been announced so far have done at least good to excellent work. I particularly think that anyone who claims that they didn't start out on dubs is telling a white lie; it's a load of crap if you ask me. I've said before that we who are posting are 100% geeks. By the majority of society we are considered weird and sometimes even hated because we're into a sub-culture. Just get over the fact that you're a nerd and stop trying to act cool with the whole "dubs-suck-elitist" thing because it's actually quite sad.

Heh, I couldn't stand it. It sounded to me like everyone was about to cry or something and could barely maintain the somewhat suitable voices they'd come up with. Oh sure there's been a lot worse, but that's one anime I'm making sure to always watch in Japanese.
Edit: WTF the same actress is Rukia and Yuzu. I guess I'm going to still hate Orihime since she is being voiced by the annoying voice actress of Mamimi in FLCL.
Not true. Mamimi, if you couldn't tell, was actually voiced by the same person who did Haruko. That lady is not the person who will be voicing Orihime.
The best dubs I've probably experienced were probably Cowboy Bebop and FLCL (aside from the fact that all the female voices in the latter are played by the same woman). I don't know how Cowboy Bebop ended up so good, and I guess the FLCL director personally oversaw the creation of the dub so the voices matched.
By the way, anyone know of any easy way to hear something of the lady who will be voicing Rukia?

Go to her website, she has some demo audio files there:
http://voiceofmichelleruff.com/
Her voice spans through a lot of pitches. She can easily pull off the girly Rukia voice similar to Yuzu but reaching the deep Rukia voice will be harder for her but she can reach it.

You do realize that every single show 4kids (I almost wrote 4chan there.) butchered was already targetted towards that age range? It's thanks to tightassed conservatives dictating what kids should and shouldn't watch that we have the incredibly insulting, sterile standards for kids' programming. Kids, especially those between 6 and 12, are plenty capable of handling whatever those shows have to throw at them. Like I said a couple sentences back, it's insulting to their intelligence to have to do this.

I will admit the first anime I saw was Ronin Warriors and it was dubbed. It was on local television and I loved it. I was probably 11 years old at the time (early 90's) I was skipping through channels (cable was very expensive back then) and it came in snowy but still watchable. I remember that entire year I waited for christmas because I was to get Ryo's red and white figures, I also got sage, sai, and kento. and I still have them to this day. Due to me being biased that there was one old dub that was awesome.

Well i've seen all of their work and i will list their roles that i know of and post my opinion on whether they will do a good job:
Johnny Yong Bosch - Kurosaki Ichigo: He did Renton Thurston on Eureka Seven which i just watched an hour ago (adultswim.com) and i heard him as Lujon in Fullmetal Alchemist (Reunion of the Fallen) coincidentally because i just bought and watched the DVD with that episode on it, Vash the Stampede from Trigun, Haruto from Witch Hunter Robin, and lastly Kiba from Wolf's Rain. With so many big roles and a wide range of voices, i'm sure he'll nail Ichigo's voice.
Michelle Ruff - Kuchiki Rukia: She's done a lot of minor roles, but the ones i know of are Ayase Terada from s-cry-ed and Yurika Dojima from Which Hunter Robin. I think that she's perfect for Rukia, those voices suit her perfectly.
Derek Stephen Prince - Ishida Uuryu: He's done Shino Aburame (the really nerdy voice, they screwed up a lot of the voice actors on Naruto to the point where i refuse to watch it), he did Keitaro Urashima from Love Hina, Zazie the beast from Trigun (i can't recall which one he was), George Tatsunami from s-cry-ed (minor role in early episode), and several small roles on Rurouni Kenshin. I honestly can't say whether he'll do a good job. Shino's voice sucks for his character but that's not the voice actors fault, it's the people who decided to make Shino nerdy rather than mysterious and cool like he was meant to be. Keitaro's voice is a little too young and upbeat rather than Ishida's dark mood and serious attitude (with the occasional sewing thing LOL) George Tatsunami's voice was more grown up and sounded like your typical mentally unstable villain. Hopefully he will do a good job and find a good balance between his various voices.
Stephanie Sheh - Inoue Orihime: She did Eureka from Euraka Seven, Hyuuga Hinata from Naruto, and a minor role in IGPX (the recent Team Satomi one). You could not possibly find a better english voice for Orihime, with her history of young, shy voices she is perfect for the role.
I won't bother commenting on the casted voices for Ichigo's family and Tatsuki tough they are good their roles just aren't that big in the majority of the series. Altough Karin's voice actor Kate Higgins did Sakura in Naruto and Talho from Eureka Seven which wher both good and the way she did Sakura is perfect for Karin. I guess they haven't released who will do the voice acting for any characters that appear after episode 16 (as we all know is where ichigo pwns Renji then gets royally pwned by Byakuya)
Sorry to make such a long post but these voices will decide whether the series is a great success or a failiure. If you want to see the cast's full voice acting history and not just voices that i know and remember then use this link: Bleach Cast and Info on their history (http://www.bleachportal.net/)

Wait a sec. Are you telling me that One Piece wasn't always a complete pile of $hit?! I know that there's over 200 episodes because one of my friends on YouTube uploads them, so i doubt that i would watch it even if it was ok. I would have to disagree there. Scott McNeil (using the tone for Kouga from inuyasha) would kick major ass for Renji. Unfortunately he's off in Canada, and not in LA if I remember right.
And I dunno about the other voices, but you can bet Steven Blum/David Lucas will be in it. That guy's in damn near everything (and maybe Lex Lang too. He and Lucas seem to work together a lot)

I would have to say a lot could work out with his voice. However, I'd love to have him as Zaraki since he doesn't play enough crazy roles in my opinion. Alucard's baritone octave and attitude are the perfect fit.

It's just that after watching a series for a long time, u get used to the voices. If they get a different voice cast for English, it'll be like totally different characters... That's why I've never enjoyed watching an English version of any anime.

Hmm, I have read that news post already and have never heard of any of those voice actors, simply because I rarely watched dubbed animes[not purposely though].
I'm not that against dubbing since I have only watched the dubbed version of Pokemon and Fruits Basket[and etc.] and after watching both for a while and then watching the Japanese ones, I find it uncomfortable, so I think the dubbing on both were not bad. All I can do is wait for the dubbed version to be out and see how it goes, but usually I think I would go with the first one I have seen or heard, so I most likely will prefer subbed Bleach over it.

As an aspiring voice actor... let me tell you this. To give a compelling perfomance using just your voice is really hard. Unless you've ever taken an acting class, or actually read a script and tried to sound believable, you have to give the English VAs a break. Sure you can act your butt off, but then you have to.. match... lip..flap. It's a stupid american concept. Notice a lot of the times, the lip flap doesn't match up perfectly on the subs. The Japanese don't care about this crap cause they are focused more on the story and the animation in general. It's a proven fact done by hours of market research, that american audiences are distracted when voices and lip flap don't exactly match up. Now, think of trying to say something you wanted to say to someone all your life, and say it. Now try and say it and throw a pause in there where it doesn't belong. Feel how awkward that was? This is what a voice actor must deal with. When the characters lips stop moving, it could be in mid sentence. This is why there needs to be a reason provided by the actor for this pause. That's when VOs become believable.
Give it a try and watch it. You already know what's going to happen anyway. :whatevah:

Blum seems too serious to do Renji. I imagine Blum as closer to Byakuya then to Renji. Ukitake would be a good match for Blum who has the seriousness but caring voice at the same time.
I think finding a good voice for Renji is going to be the hardest part for the dubbers. His Japanese voice is truly unique and I haven't heard anyone sound anywhere close to it but I'm confident that Adult Swim will not put a crap dub on their programming. They haven't in the last year and all the crap dubs they have shown were first shown on other stations.
