Although he answered the question from Komamaru directly the lack of clarity in his answer doesn't really specify what his motives are. Sounded like a bunch of rhetorical nonsense which pretty much translated to "Whatever I do is right." Does anyone else have any opinions on why Tousen, who was probably the least likely to join up with Aizen and the Menos as well as betraying everyone who counted on him, would do it?

He probably thinks Aizen is capable of starting a brand-new world without crimes and violence because of Aizen's great power. So the "clouds will disperse from the sky"

i think that tousen is tricking aizen and will betray him like the boss in metal gear solid 3.

^I doubt it. Of all the Captains, Tousen was the one who would have been able to repel Aizen's hypnosis. If he wanted to avoid all this trouble, he could have just spread the word about Aizen and everyone could have ganged up on him then.

I kinda agree with Zanga's theory. It seems like Tousen believes that what Aizen's doing is right. That combined with his inability protect someone he cared about would point to him wanting a world where there is absolute control. It's also possible that he did a "Sasuke." Getting more powerful no matter what the cost etc =p

Maybe Aizen promised him to change everything so that in the end there will be no more deaths. He said somethign he walks the path with less bloodsheet , kinda funny if you think about all what Aizen did to hinamori and hitsuga , also Ichigo and Renji and so on.

And if you know the Manga its even more "funny" , because his suggested plans definatly have nothing to do with "less" bloodsheed.

In many ways you look at Aizen, he is a better leader than Yamato.

The 13 Gotei is messed up, in Tousen's point of view. They allow trechery and killing of each other to get to be captains. Such as Zaraki killing of old captain to succeed him.

Then there is the internal fights between each other.

Aizen probably seem like the stronger authority than Yamato is. Yamato like other shinigamis just follow orders and they are pawns, while Aizen made that statement before, he wish to be the new order or God above Soul Society.

Tousen thinks this is the right way, just like what the Nazi's think is right.

"This is the easiest way with the least amount of blood spilled."

Tousen said that (well, something like that).

yamato, is indeed a crappy leader but he hass some real respect everybody(excapt the Aizan gang) listens to him so there's a real Hierachy also between the captians there's a real difference. Tousen wants peace at least he says so, I think it's just crap, in the flashback you see someone important to him dead/die. Later you sy animallookingcaptian by that grave, Just after the dead in the flashback he suddenly decides to become shinigami. so my conclusion, revenge, power therefore he joined Aizen. Or maybe he wants no more blood to be spilled and therefore he's going to destroy everthing( at least then there cannot by spilled any more=P XD)

Tousen has an impractical view of human nature - you have to balance everyone's selfishness and instincts of self-preservation against one another or things will fly to pieces.

Power corrupts...it really *is* true - thats why communism fails, because at the end of the day, someone is still controlling the machine.

I hope Tousen does turn against Aizen or at least against the boorish members of the arrancar. Tousen always seem to be against the violent and impulsive people he meets (Kenpachi, Grimmjow, and probably the husband of Tousen's friend). It's ironic since Tousen's former best friend in Soul Society, Komamura, is somewhat boorish too.

I believe that Tousen will eventually realize the path with least bloodshed is not with Aizen or he will mutate his philosophy to something thats basically self-preservation at all costs (least bloodshed for Tousen). I hoping for the former but after the downer I got from knowing he was a traitor, I wouldn't rule out the latter.

Tousen should just beat the crap out of Aizen=P Since others wouldn't stand much of a chance because of the hypnosis!

Tousen eyes reflect the path of least bloodshed. In other words we make a big sacrifice, betraying the shinigamis, destroying karakura and because of that we become the rulers and then from there on we make it so no one ever suffers again.

Its simplistic and if it works it truly would be the path of least bloodshed because in the end he will have prevented much more death than he caused.

heh tousens should quit while he's at it....because soon their gunna attack the innocents and he'll have to backout...

It doesnt matter if they attack innocents. As long as he will eventually be able to overly compensate for their deaths thats fine.

He saw that the former 11th division captain get killed by Zaraki. He disagreed with some of soul societies methods, like challenging captains 1 on 1 for the captaincy.

My Guess:

His reason for leaving is kind of vague. Basically, his path of justice is the one with the least blood shed. Perhaps, Tousen left Soul Society to prevent a massive blood shed. Maybe, Aizen forced him. The only path with the least blood shed was to join Aizen.

In the manga, the person who killed his friend was her own husband.

"Her husband killed her. He killed a comrade over an argument, and then he killed his wife for scolding him about it."
