Symbols show as ?, what do I need?

What symbols? Is it a website? Or everything? More specific please.

Like... Japanese characters, a few other things, just show up as ????.

Oh... You need to install Japanese on your operating system. If you're running on Windows XP then you need to do the following:

Start Menu ---> Control Panel ---> Regional and Language Options ---> Languages ---> *tick the option that says "Install files for East Asian languages"* and voila! You should have it installed. You might need your Windows CD for that.

In my case however it kinda installed it automatically when I tried viewing a Japanese site. It just prompted me to install it and I accepted. Next thing you know, its working :).

thats why language packs are optional. they use up space.
