Have any of you guys noticed the difference in the length of the sleeves on the Captains for the Shinigami?
Why the length differences? Like, for instance, to name a few: Ukitake, Shunsui, and Maiyuri all have long sleeved captain robes but Hitsugaya, Byakuya and even Soi Fong have shorter sleeves. I'm confused.
I think it might be a stake of how long the captains have been serving or their rank. Just curious. Does anyone know or is this something we haven't figured out quite yet in the series?

I think it's the style that the captain chooses, really. Byakuya's also has a cut on the bottom of his, too, I think.

Their probably passed down from captain to captain until their too worn out too wear anymore and they make another. Note Zaraki killing the previous 11th captain and taking his robe.

It's just the style of what the captain wants.
There's really no real connection to why their robes are different. It might express their character, seeing that Zaraki's is all torn up, but I don't know how it would explain the others.

It's been said that all of the captains with long sleeves have been there for a while (at least 100 years judging by Kurotsuchi). For example; Yamamoto, Kyouraku, and Ukitake were the among the first to become captains and all have long sleeves. Byakuya, Gin, and Hitsugaya were among the most recent to become captain and all have no sleeves. Aizen and Unohana both have sleeves so I'm imagining they were early members but not as early as Ukitake and Kyouraku. As for Kenpachi, the fillers showed that Tousen was already a captain when Kenpachi killed the former captain so I guess Kenpachi is also a recent addition.
Two odd situations are Soi Fong and Tousen. Soi Fong and Kurotsuchi should have become captains at around the same time when Urahara and Yorouichi left. I think the reason behind this is that Soi Fong had to earn her 2nd division captaincy rather than inherit it like the leadership of the Covert Ops since Yoruichi was not a captain.
Tousen and Komamura presumably became captains fairly closely but Tousen has sleeves and Komamura doesn't. The only explanation is that Tousen was a shinigami for a while before Komamura joined.

About Kenpachi, he took his robes from the captain he killed, so maybe the sleeves were lost in the fight so he just kept it that way? I don't think it's about how long you are there to be honest. Maybe people just have the sleeves to give themselves the feeling of being more experienced (or they might just be cold?)

I heard that those without sleeves just leave it that way for better movement, but i agree with gdo01.

I personally think this is proof that for at least these 6 captains it reflects seniority.

I think it has to do with the time/placement captains have served under their divisions, respectively. i.e Kyouraku/Ukkitake/unohana with the long sleaves and byakuya, hitsugaya, kenpachi, gin, with the shorter sleaves. Again this is all based on assumption

yeah, i've read it somewhere that the younger captains (or captains are new to the position) have their robes with no sleeves (e.g. kenpachi, gin, hitsugaya, byakuya) whereas older captains (captains who have been in their position for a longer time) have full sleeves (e.g. ukitake, shunsui, aizen, unohana)

it's all a matter of style... If you look closer there are a lot of differences between them all, like the way they carry their Zanpakutou or their waistbands. Each one has their own personality, so it would make sense that they each dress acording to their preference...
It's most probably of their personal style.

I think its just their style. When you go to a shop you choose the trouser you like best so i think thats the same things.
i think white robes with black represent the captains while the black robed shinigami represent the vice captain and squad members. some of the white robed captains are not the same because each individual has a unique sense of style, lol. ;)

No ncessarily... of course some of the Captain Haori's desings it is style, but since there seems to be a pattern regarding regarding the sleeves, I stick to my idea that the sleeves reperesnt seniority.
Those Captains nominated less than 100 years ago (Byakuya, Gin) all have short sleeves, while the seniormost Captains (Aizen, Yamamoto, Ukitake, Shunsui) all have long sleeves. With the exception of Kenpachi, I believe that long sleevd robes identify the more senior Captains.

Personally I think it's all about the style, but I have to agree with gdo01. There could be a possibility that it all depends on how long a Captain has served in Soul Society...gdo01 gave enough proof for me to believe that notion. But It's nice to think that each Captain has his/her own stly of wearing their Captains' clothes. I mean, don't they all look good in their own robes?

Hell yeah! Makes good sense.
And i think Kenpachi's sleeve is torn off since it was the robe of the previous captain so as to indicate he is new

ok... i think its jst their style.. i mean if they are pass on, then... why does Hitsugaya's fit him so well? or imagine Komamoru handing his robe down to Hitsugaya or vice versa?
and also in teh fight between Yuroichi and Soifon, Soifon lets go of robe and let it blew away... surely if they are SO hard to earn, she wouldnt have let go of it jst like that...
+ Kenpachi took the previous captain's robe in the battle field jst to show that he is now a captain... the robe was also cut where Kenpachi cut him and it was stain with blood...

Wow, I actually never thought that it would represent something. I've always thought it was style, but you never know. It is a cool/interesting coincidence.
