Why do you suppose it is that when Ichigo and Renji use Bankai, their appearance changes?

Prolly the fact that the Bankai chooses how it wants to look/be?
Can't really post anythng valid... my Opinion would be since we have only seen captain bankai their clothe dont change because they are that, Captains... and ichigo and renji prolly for achieving bankai by alternate methods

I think its related to the control of reiatsu thing. Captains can control their reiatsu and I believe that they can control or suppress any outfit changes. Either that or Renji's and Ichigo's bankais are just unique.

I think it is just part of their Bankai. I find it doubtable that using different methods of obtaining your bankai will produce different bankai. Bankai is probably just an expression of the users reiatsu and their swords soul.
Although it is odd that ichigo and renji both did seem to use a different method to obtain their bankai, dont forget that renji had probably been working on it for much longer than Ichigo. Renji is at least as old as rukia who said she was alot older than ichigo.
Perhaps Renji actually did practice for 10 years to obtain his bankai? I cannot remember exactly what was said around the time he was obtaining it, although everyone did seem suprised he did get it.
Oh well.

Because the creators knew that Ichigo would look really stupid with a skinny ass sword and the shinigami outfit. Think about it.. It doesn't match.
I think that's the real reason why they did it. They did it to Renji because it looks cooler? There is no true anime explanation for that.

I just noticed that all the captain outfits make the wearer look bigger corresponding with the power of their huge bankais while Ichigo's outfit makes him look smaller in order to look faster.

um no. Byakuya quotes him on that saying "U fool, to be able to master every movement of your bankai u have to train for over 10 yers" right after he PWNS the shit out of Renji.

maybe ichigo and renji had clothes change because they dont have a white captain jacket....
maybe that's why byakuya and others captains dont change they're clothes
Just because they don't have a jacket? I don't think it should matter what you wear for your bankai to take effect, I think the creators just felt like making Ichigo and Renji unique and gave them another outfit.

they have costumes because they are superior and the costumes look kewl! i dont think its their reitsu i think its their strength
What I was going to say has already been said by

but I thought I'd elaborate on that anyway.
My theory is that the bankai seem to respond to the avatar the zanpakuto are shown to have - both Ichigo's and Renji's bankai have distinctive traits from their zanpakutous avatars (Ichigo's clothes resemble Zangetsu's coat and Renji's... fur collar? looks a bit like Zabimaru).
Compared to the other bankai's we have seen, I'm not sure if this theory holds up, however.
Byakuya's bankai involve the blade dissovling into tiny pieces/petals and I don't think we've been shoved how it's avatar looks (if it has any, which it probably should) and it seems to me like Hitsugaya's bankai become like an extention of himself (his right arm and back are covered in ice). Maybe his avartar shows itself as a being of ice?
As for the other bankai, I'll refrain judgment until I remember how they looked... ^^;
In short - my theory is that bankai represents, to some extent, the form of the avatar taken by the zanpakuto and how much it affects the wielder's appearance (nothing or apparently) is related to that form.
It could also be so that several years of experience enables the wielder to surpress the bankai state so no apparent different is seen on the wielder (for example - compare how the released bankais of Byakuya and Hitsugaya affects the wielder).

well in that perspective, you're right .. of course that's the animators and the team who decide it .. who else then ?
But .. in the perspective of anime .. I think that it has something to with the personal connection between the zanpaktou and the holder .. both are fighting together, and demand confidence from each other. I think that by wearing an outfit that resembles or reminds about the zanpaktou, symbolize the Co-operation between the zanpaktou and the holder.
In the captains' case, I have no idea (I wish Kubo Taito was a member of this site)
