I use google and yahoo, but their best for if you know what you want, eg. character or series etc. for random stocks that look cool you can always search for a Stock/Render site. Check for manga scans, only prob there is B/W only so it can limit your choice.

Even on other GFX sites. the only problem with some of these is like most things they want to part you from your hard earned cash!!!!

Technically a stock can be the focus character or item from any pic you like the look of, just means you have to cut it from it's background, while been time consuming its not too tough.

EDIT: What are you looking for in general and I'll check my Archives for you...

Plus he's both Anime and Manga, and a short one at that which mean most renders will be rare.

Alucard will be much easier however i don't personally have many because i dont like the quality of the Alucard in the Series, esp when the new OAV looks so much better but i'll see what i can dig up :D

I've really taken a lieking to using photo stocks.

There i put them in a seperate album on my photobucket and linked them to ur name in the roster. I think you have some great potential Hinata. you need to stop putting yourself down, Those sigs were quite good, (the KH2 one works very well) I can see your style starting to emerge in those sigs.

Now heres what i think you should start to brush up on:

Firstly find high quality stocks, the bigger the better this helps ensure crystal clear quality, as some of your sigs were 'fuzzy'. However it is understandable that sometimes you can't find a good quality stock of the character you're looking for.....

Next you dont always have to have a lot of the stock in view, the KH2 one is a good example of this as Sora is a bit too small in this sig, sure we can see all of him but hes a bit hard to make out. Try to get the stock as clear and large as you can in the sig, it wont matter if the top of a head or hand etc is missing if we can see the rest clearly.

and finally start making your backgrounds more exciting, use a bit of brushing and blending, put in a few C4D renders just to spice things up. try out gradients and colour balances too.

Now don't take thse pointers as gospel, try experimenting see what works with your style, check out the tut section and do a few tuts see if theres anything there you like and can add in to your own style...

Okay, heres the good news: Very good first attempt at a sig. Pretty much on par with my first effort..(wow that was soooo long ago) anyway just like my first attempt there a few things that need tweaking to make that into a excellent attempt so here goes....

Firstly it needs a border, although many will say that this is down to personal preferance i think it helps make the sig look solid and tidy.

Since you have such a solid difference between the stock and the background some additional blending is required, try selecting the stock, or select the area out side the stock then invert the selection so just the stock is selected next simply right click and select Feather try about 15 pixels and hey presto a simple bit of blending. (make sure you do this for all the stock layers, if it has no effect the increase the feathering size on the lower layers)

The text could use some work too, try right clicking the text layer and select blending effects, try stroke or outer glow and play around with the colours and settings. Once again many will say this is down to text style and preferance.

I' like the darkening of the stock works well but the quality is lacking but you sometime have to work with what you got!!

All in all a good attempt, well done!

It's a nice sig, however, the left side of the BG doesn't mesh well with the right side imo. You might try making the left side a darker/blacker. As it stands, the left side makes almost as much of a focal point at the render.

Personally I would say a little harsh Senpai-san, I was trying to maintain a comic-bookey feel to the sig and keep Alucard distinct from his background, but I'll try again.

And I was rushing so didn't have time to hand draw a border on!

That and other distractions.....but I shall strive to do better.....that was 320 x 115 pixels....would 400 x 120 be an easier size to work with anyone???

@Kichi: I wasn't been harsh, just a few points for you to try and as i said to hinata. any C&C you get aint gospel, in the end its ur sig and it's up to you as to how you want to to look.

BTW to do a border just make a new layer on the top and the select all in that layer (even tho its empty) then right click and select stroke i usually set it for inside, 1px, colour black.

As for size work with whatever size you find best, sometimes it depends on the stock size as well.

And once again good first attempt.

@shaeh:l yeah i see what you mean, i was trying fo a icy effect but it does distract a bit from the render, i'll try darkening it a bit.

I kind of like the darker, desaturated purple version, but people have told me the first looks better because it's more flamey. I have also been told that the orange/purple combination doesn't work too well. What do you guys think?

Maybe I could go with the second's look, but the first's colors?

An tricky situation to say the least Shaehl.

In my opinion, they're both great sigs, but a red highlighting to the purple in the darker sig would look cool....

So yeah i reckon combining the two (i.e. first one's colours on no. 2's style) would look great....just be careful not to make the flame look too bright....looks a bit garish to me..

Welcome to the team tanka!

now i'm thinking once we get a few more members of holding a sig comp to decide the co-owner spot, (since we need somone to run things if i'm indisposed for some reason... ie World of warcraft lol)

Anyway the sig there is looking good tanka, i'd add maybe a few c4d renders or light brushing which might add a final touch to what your doing, however i've never been one to interfere to much with other peeps sigs too much. just keep expirimenting with what you got til you find that 'X' factor that just clicks and makes you think "yeah that looks right"

Tanka, I think the problem is that you've blended the render (portions of it at least) to the point that it is indistinguishable from the BG. I'm not sure the method you used to blend, but you might consider duplicating the image, giving it a 4-8 point gaussian blur, inverting the colors and setting it to soft-light or overlay, maybe at a lowered opacity. That might help, but I use GIMP so I'm not sure how it will turn out on PS.

Regarding flow, I have trouble with that too, but I usualy duplicate the image, give it a motion blur and set to something like lighten only, or soft-light. In your case, the c4d creates the suggestion that the flow should be sort of spreading outward from the base of Ichigo's neck. I think the flare (or is that part of the c4d?) you have to the left of his neck detracts from this. Anyway, you might try duplicating the image, giving it a motion blur set to zoom, giving it a gaussian blur after that and setting to a layer mode that fits.

With the lighting, I would probably place graphic flares on a black layer set to screen, behind the render layer(s), at the base of Ichigo's neck and maybe a smaller one at his wrist. Give the a gaussian blur if necessary and/or brush black set to overlay ontop of them.

Anyway, those are just some suggestions, not sure exactly how effective they will be without trying them myself.

Thanks guys. I personally like V2 more as well, but sometimes people like the desaturated look. I'm feeling that it's lacking something though. Maybe something in the dark area on the left? Or some kind of motion blurred streaks coming from the flame/cloud behind his head? BTW, the squiggly light things aren't a c4d and I only used brushes to smudge.

The first thing that hits me about your sig is render quality. It looks grainy to me :S . Effects-wise though, I love it. Also, I think you should stick the text in the top left dark area instead of where it currently is to make it look less empty.

@RefrieD - Those sigs look decidely cute! Although I think I'm gonna have to stick my neck out here and say v2 is the better....dunno why just something grabs me about it more than the other two.

@Shaehl - I'm agreeing with RefrieD about the text location.....it sort of looks like an Artist's signature rather than advertising itself as YOUR signature. Larger and against the darker bg of the top left it would stand out better and imo enhance the sig.

But love the effects.....sort out the text and I think you've nailed it!

As far as I know, rep is like the replacement for post count. Supposedly, you get rep by doing or saying something that compells someone else click you "add rep" button. Although I'm not sure if that's the only way to get it, considering I have 16 and no one has given me any. It's possible that having a higher post, being in a division, having mod/admin status, having been here for a certain amount of time, also contributes to your rep. Of course, that's just speculation.

The only factors that your rep power are based on are how much rep you have received, how many posts you have, and how long you have been a CB member.

Obviously, C & C is expected and ultimately welcomed, but I hope this one has turned out a little better than my previous attempts!!

EDIT: I know it's still not brilliant.....but I just wanted to try and nail a nice diffuse but subtle blending into the background whilst keeping the sig simple.

Much more of an improvement!!! Excellent job, i can see you tried the feathering i mentioned, however it looks as tho you forgot to invert the selection on the stock? But by some lucky fluke.. its give you a nice warm glowing diffusion into the background rather then the background into the stock.

Looks like the next thing we need to do is get you some custom brushes for PS so you can have a go at doing some brushing in the background and over the stock to try that method of blending next.

That way you can find the techniques that you like plus if one you get good at doesn't for some reason work with the stock you got, and it'll happen sometimes. Then at least you'll have another method to fall back on.

Until then see that sketchy/pen effect in you Current sigs hair? Yeah? right to get that you do this:

1) Duplicate you stock
2) On the top copy, apply a Graphic Pen filter ( Filters/Sketch/Graphic Pen) Play round with the settings until you have either a majority black w/ white stokes or Majority white w/ black stokes (It can depend on stock)
3) Apply filter, then set that layer to screen or overlay (Once again depending on stock and which way your filter went, what you're after is the stock looks pretty much the same expect now i has vivid strokes. If the stokes are white or the main body of the stock is whitish try the other setting or redo the Filter. )
4) Adjust opacity to taste.

Thus you get those nice faint pen strokes. try it some time.

Actually tats i didn't use feathering....there is 3 layers below the solid one, each with a varying degree of gaussian blur!!

But thankyou, am gonna try and turn out a couple more in that style for now....see how I go....any suggestions as to a stock??

The sig is definately an improvement on your last one. You might try using BG colors that match or complement the render though.

Comments and critiques needed, I don't like how it looks fully, so tell me what is wrong.
Btw, the stock is just a render I picked from a pack, there are two stocks of Natsuki from Mai HiME on the sides clipping masked, and the background is a good picture of Le Louvre at night.

@Hinata: I like it a lot, but it seems really empty. Especially at the bottom. Cropping a bit off the bottom would do it good methinks.

@Kichi: Gaussian blur won't take you to that next level in gfx. I mean, it's better than having the render fully imposed, but it is definitely not as good as the lasso/feather, soft-brush eraser, or filters.


@the 1up sig: I knew the left side was too sharp... :S

Omg yeah, let DR in, he pwns, btw DR, nice new sig, I liek how the bg overlaps onto the stock a bit on the left, but the text could use a bit of a glow around it and put a 1px black border around the whole thing, it'd then be considerably good.

@Kichi: the gaussian blur worked on the ichigo sig but, it doesnt work for me on your rukia sig. In addition you need to start coming up with your own backgrounds a bit more. If you use another pic then at least try to use the gradient tool and try a bit of basic brushing with the defaults. To see what effect it has on the background.

And not to be too picky but i thinks the size is a bit too big height wise and the text is too large.

OK!! @ Hinata not bad, but you could make the stock stand out more it's a bit hard to see, try puting it on more then once / duplocating it (yea i got bad spelling what about it...lol), also try dif brush seting's.

i have got a fue tut's if you want to know how to brush pm me ok that goes for every one i also have tut's on how to use render's in your tag's, you are more then welcome to use them.

You can see there's not much work in it,improve the blending of the render,(if you tried kawaii then pic color out of the render) Text sucks different font different color differnet place! @DreadRaven - i see where you was going with it, but you should try this when you have your size for the tag i use 350x100 get your render paste go layers where it say's normal, change that to screen, then go image adjustments then levels and play with them abit till you get something you like, the render should be just for lighting not a bg, the bg should be one color can be more, and use brushes for the bg, i have got lots of tuts if you want one.

oh and the pic should be the first thing you put in, work around it that's what i do.

Okay, place got active quick! Right having caught up i dont see why we cant have a request thread. Thought its not a requirement that you take a request some of us are busy with other things such as work, etc. So I'll sent one up once we have a full roster or if i get a unamimous decision to start one now.

Tatsu- The sword effects look cool. However, you might want to darken the non-sword parts of the render some. You could also blend the edges of the hair into the the bg, for a shadowed look, I think the hair looks bad anyway. The blood elves text also detracts from the flow I think.

@ RefrieD: V2 mate. The darker background works well, you just need to tune up the reds a little touch and it's nailed.

@ Shaehl: The text seems to blur away a bit.....almost like an artist's signature. But it's a way better job than I could do - excellent work

@Dread Raven: Thanks for the C & C - tried putting a small lens flare in that corner but it didn't look right - drew the eye away from the lightning and Alucard.

As for the request thread, am gonna abstain from voting. I doubt I'll be good enough to handle requests any time soon, and as I only get a decent amount of practice time once a week, it wouldn't be wise if I'm the only one around to attempt it and bring the team rep down.

Oh and @ Tatsumaru - The Blood Elf sig rocks.....although some of the glows look a little garish to me, but thats my op!!

A good render is really a matter of taste and personal choice Kootje - aggron suggested www.boyis.com to me.....there's a few good one's there but not a lot.....

Advanced is the highest, Intermediate is the mid-rank, and beginner is the lowest. To go up simple prove yourself to the rest of the team if they all agree you've improved then you go up. or if you think you've been placed wrong,or should be promoted then state you case but once again its down to the rest of the team.

That Vince sig blends really well, maybe you can put a little more effects in the background, second sig can't read the text renders to small, and for blending maybe you can sit the layer where you have those black things in the corner to overlay

Yes that would be good you can also use layer mask, or duplicate a layer a few times and play along with the settings, Masking is in the tuts I put up in my last edit

To get it away, maybe lightly brush with a color that's in your sig then put the layer on overlay and mayb switch opacity, that way you'll still offset the stock and it's not just plain white

I like it a lot.....like DR said it flows nicely and has a nice overall vibe to it, although i would have lightened the text just a touch, but that's just me.

Yeah I screwed up, since stocks in the middle needed to place it on a side, couldnt move stock since the sigs build around it=/ better luck next time,
edit: well lighting it stops the flow and the blending, tried that

I can see your sig now Kootje. Much better than the Arcane Designs sig. This flows and the colors work. One thing I can suggest is not letting the text take so much away from the render. My eyes are torn between the text and the render when I look at the sig. Smaller text or blended more.

And about the temari sig, Ii'll post the .psd when I get the chance.

I think the lighting improved with the touch-ups you made for version 2. However, I think your brushing over the render is too pronounced. Either brush more for a better blended bg, or erase some of the brushing over the render.

I would have to say V3 Kootje....the pattern seems to wrench my eyes a little, whereas just the c4 seems to make the sig flow smoother....

Okay guys i put you at those ranks based on what you showed me at join up.

@hinata. your sigs at join up where beginner but you have improved, however you still could learn and use a few extra techniques before you turn out a Intermediate sig.

@Kootje your recent efforts have caught my eye and i agree a few more like that and i'll put you to intermediate myself.

@Yuurei RL sigs are tough but in you stated case sig theres to much negative space if you wanna see a advanced RL sig check out a GFXers in ONE designs, since most are advanced GFXers formally of Dreamscape Designs.

If you wanna go up a rank prove it to the team, as they say "put your money where your mouth is"

Finally if we have continued complaints bout rank i will abolish the system as i want this team to be about helping each over to grow to learn and cover new techniques together and to be a fun place to be. If ranks are gunna result in any hostility or unhappyness then they'll be abolished. They're mainly a guide for anyone looking at our team for either requests or to join.

EDIT: If need be i could put a rank between beginner and intermediate. should it be required.

I didn't want to go against our owner's decision, but since I saw Yuurei's sigs in the CnC forum I thought he(she?) should be advanced... His use of lighting is impeccable. Dang Yuurei. I want your talent! My lighting is crap most of the time.

right, sorry bout the harshness of the last post guys, but i dont wanna see the team fall apart because of something silly like ranks. In addition no member will be ever kicked from this team expect for one thing..... Inactivity over a extended period of time i.e 6 months.... even then they will be entered in the hall of fame list.

Now on a less serious note heres my latest offering:

I went for very subtle brushing on this one and very little BG too cos of those huge wings, but theres a C4d in there with a bit of a gradient. The tatoos and eyes i further picked out with white on a new layer and then gaussian blured and set to overlay to get the increased glow.

EDIT: In fact i think that the subtle brushing gives an almost misty effect, but thats just me.

@Kootje: About your final version, I think maybe just tone down the graphics pen line a bit? That's all I can say. You're getting a lot better.

@Tats: Well, the render isn't really blended well. It looks superimposed. Also, I think the render takes up wayy to much space. For that signature, work on depth in the background and lighting. It's dark everywhere. I like the eyes though :) .
