hi evry1...here i'm talking about our 5 senses....now i heard that if one or more of our our 5 senses fail the other ones strenghten....and i wanna know how u ppl think of this topic..do u believe dat if one of our senses fail da others strenghten??if yes or no ,say y...

- i believe yes...becuz maybe da energy used for dat sense maybe be transfferd to the other senses which makes the other senses a bit stronger dan usual stronger and more active..

i say yes, becuase the sense that you lose is a downfall. Dundo, you look at it more spiritually im guessing, im going to look at it at a more scientific view. when a person is born without a leg, per se, they adapt to it and walk on one leg, adapting to their diabilities. Same goes for losing a sense. Your body adapts, increasing the sensitivity to the other senses.

2 things
1) ur far less likely to concentrate when there is noise in the background
2) paraplegics on average have much stronger arms than normal people.

Yea..
Do you know all the energy used for sight?
If one loses sight, then all that energy that was beign used on that will be going to another.. Same thing with all the senses..

there is no such thing as energy.
however for example if u lose ur vision u will have to relay on ur ears, but u are not gonna hear better than before

Well, I don't know, but I've heard of blind people whos Touch and Hearing get better once they lost their sight.

Yeah, they get stronger, but I have no idea about what you peaple are talking about when you talk about the "energy" normally used for sight being used for other purposes. It's simple, your senses are already stronger then you think, your brain just filters out information it doesnt think it needs, if your eyes can tell you you just walked into a large room, you dont need your other senses to tell you that also. We did an experiment in one of my classes last year, we were blindfloded and we were lead around by a partner, after a few minutes it was amazing how much more sensitive my other senses had become. Just from feeling the pressure of the air around me I could tell if we were in a small room or a large one, my hearing was much better, I could hear footsteps from around a corner that my partner couldnt. So yeah, they get stronger, infact there is tons of documented evidence for this, I dont really see how this is a debate.

just though i would like to say that scientists now believe we have a 6th sense. i can't remember what it's called but basically it says that even with your eyes shut or whatever your body instinctively knows were all your body parts are.
to test it close your eyes and run your hand in front of your face without touching it. you will find that even though you can't see were your hand is or how far you have moved around and even if you are dizzy you will still be able to stop your hand before you touch any part of your body.

any way yes i do believe that your senses get stronger when you lose another but only for certain senses. your hearing get better when you lose your sight becasue the part of your brain for hearing is next to the part for sight and so absobs into the sight part making itself bigger and stronger. it dosn't however work if you lose your sense of taste you don't then get better hearing.

This is by far a debate to be even discussed =/. Its pretty much a closed case with the scientific evidence supporting the fact that when one of your 5 senses is hindered the others are 'enhanced' in a sense.

i actually didnt know which place to put it in so i just pickd one at random and chose debate

Don't do that again please. The debates subforum is reserved to serious topics and discussions, this thread BARELY passes as a debate (in my opinion anyway) if another mod finds it not worthy being in this section then expect it to be closed or moved.

i agrEE! but anyway, imma still throw my opinion in.

as far as "enery usage" is concerned, i dont think that's the reason for strengthened senses. more like adaptation..

Yes, our other senses strengthen. This is because we are forced to use them more. For instance, if you put a blindfold on and walk around for an our, you begin to hear things you've never heard before and my actually be able to smell more and feel the different textures and contures of the ground and stuff around you. Taste increases and you may enjoy your favorite foods more.

I've known a couple of people who were deaf or blind. These people seemed to have an uncanny knack for knowing exactly what's going on around them, even if they couldn't see or hear it.

I'm not sure if this has to do with the body adjusting, or the mind concentrating on this different aspects.

yep your other senses get better if one fails because you need to rely more on the remaining senses.

Your neurons take on different tasks if they stop beeing used in a certain way. For instance, there has been reports on 'ghost-limbs', in cases like the guy who lost his forearm, but continued to feel that lost fingers thru his face, cuz the facial neurons are close to the hand neurons in the brain, and then the neighboring hand neurons took on the job of feeling the face, causing the confusion in senses. His face got more sensitive cuz he had now more neurons working on that, and the same happens w/ your senses.

Well for our day to day needs our senses are good enough. That said our senses are probably way inferior then those of our prehistoric ancestors. Also note that we are ill equiped in comparison to most animals (some of which have other senses as well) when it comes to senses, strength and speed.

And yes when our sight is impeded in any way our other senses become sharper. Have you ever noticed that during night time you can smell and hear better?

If you practise your sense they do improve as the brain uses more energy to deal with the extra information you are trying to recieve.

Cheers,

R.P.

the loss of one sence does not transfer energy to other sences.

what is happening is we as people are dependant on our sences regardless of how many we use.

when we have 5 sences working our brian uses the relevant information from all five sences (and as was said by an earlier poster) dismisses excess info.

remove one sence like hearing you will not be recieving sound cues which enhance your perifery so being deaf will naturaly make your brain pay more attention to your periferal vision to make up for the lack of sound cues that used to do the same the sence of feeling cues will also increase because without sound you have a blind area behind you, being able to feel motion behind you will also fill the role hearing did.

its not a matter of the sences being stronger or getting more energy.

its that your brain uses more cues that were previously ignored from the other sences to cover the missing sence.

it's not really a debate, because it's more of a factual thing. things like this are mostly known already. but it's really interesting to think about and talk about. i had my opinions, but i didnt ever set mind on it until this thread. i learned much, also!

Well, I agree than losing one sense can strengthen another, but my reason is different. I think if you lose a sense like your sight you might work to use the other senses more and work your way through the rest of your life. you might practice more on hearing and your smelling to go to where you are. You will use all your senses and sooner or later, they will strengthen more and more until it was better than before and that is because you have been trying hard to make use of them to replace your sight.

I guess my my idea of how losing one strength can strengthen another is kind of off topic from what some of you guys are saying >_<

i disagree..well not totaly but my aunt lost her sight at 15..now she can hear the slightest noise and can even tell what person is coming in the room just by there footfalls...now her hearing may have not gotten any"better" since she was 15..but losing one sense definitely makes u more n sync with ur other ones

Indeed the loss of one sense increases the other senses......It's a way to readapt and it's scientificaly proven......

I think that our other senses do strengthen. Look at bllind people they can't see but they rely on touch and smell and taste. Some can smell thing so far away that someone with working eyes couldn't smell or see. And same with touch.
