Online.. um do you mean free or just regular ones... anyway.
Well the two most common is of course:
Battlefield 2...
and Counter-strike Source
I've played CSS a little too much so I'm pretty fed up with it..

CS:SOURCE remains the big owning thing since other FPS came to compete with it.

IMO TO:Crossfire (google) is better than CS:Source (because its free :doindadom) but you need ut2004 to run it.

you can also try WarRock. It's a free online FPS with vechicles.

Well most FPS games can be online. Are you looking for one specifically for mutliplayer. Or just one that will give you a soild Online exprience.
Battle Feild 2 would be your best bet

In that sense Counter Strike: Source is also free, but you just need Half Life 2 to run it, check your bases before throwing facts around.
First off, what kind of computer is your brother running, no use in buying the most recent games if he wont be able to run them because of the system not being able to handle them. Secondly, how much money does he want to pay, take into account that he could pay 20-30$(usd) for half life, but then have access to the hundreds of modification that have been made for it, while this is the same with many, many other games, the half life series seems to have the most userfriendly interface for installing and playing 3rd party developed games. Also, what type of games does he like, does he like WWII themed games, vietnam, modern combat, or SciFi themed games, maybe he prefers the combat simulation games. In my suggestion you may want to go with either Half life or Half Life 2, being those two games will give you the best free selection of 3rd party developed games to choose from later on if he gets bored of a game.

CS 1.6.
End of story.
There is no other game.
HL mods > you.
And BF2 is so terrible. Especially online. Everyone's a dick, and it's virtually no fun at all.

anyways, call of duty 2 is a good wwII game, i loved it
i love counter-strike 1.6, ya its old school, but its still fun
quake and doom are nice too. the multiplayer is awesome
amercia's army is ok, unless ur bro is interested with army stuff. its basely about tactics and stuff

I started in CS 1.4 played for about 3 years then quit. 1.6 is a fun game. but the 1.6 community is probably the most arrogant, immature gaming community on the web. BF2 players are more older than the 1.6 players and will usually be a dick to you if you play with the cs mentality..I.E "I PwnZ j00 NubZ k thx bye"
One thing I hate about bf2 players young or old is that they are complete nut tards ingame....tking for a stupid jet,tank,chopper....5 guys waiting in line for a stupid jet while completely ignoring their team is just beyond me.....even after the enmy commander drops artillery on them 5 times they'll still form up on the jet respawns, hoping to get a jet =\ *sigh* im ranting now. Also once you play bf2 on maxed settings there is just no going back to 1.6 :(

Unless he is planning to get a really good laptop, I doubt he can run CS: Source or BF2 with decent quality. If it's ran in low quality, it isn't worth playing IMO.
I would recommend CS 1.6 since it's low requirements.
