“Oh… You’re here” he said in a lifeless voice
“Yeah… She said
He took a moment to glance in her direction. Her eyes were closed. It looked like she had been crying, he tried to speak, but the words wouldn’t come out. It was like he was
grasping around in the darkness for the words to describe how he felt.
“Did you think this is how it would happen?” she said stealing the thoughts from his head.
“I… Just didn’t think about it…” he said.
“You didn’t…?”
“I didn’t …”
There was a pause, a long silence and she turned.
She deliberately looked him in the eye.
“I didn’t imagine the end to be like this, so sudden…” She said
“Why do we talk about this now?” he said.
"When else?" she said.
She turned away again.
“It’s just…we could have done so much more… now…It’s all… ” she trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid.
Another silence drifted into the air, so loud to the ears.
“This isn’t how it should have been…” he said in a frustrated tone “Isn’t there more than this?”
Again the silence continued… the question left unanswered.
“What was your last thought?” she asked softly.
“Regret… It was always regret…” he said just as softly.
“Mine… was that I didn’t fulfill my promise to my sister, that id take her to the park that day…I guess you remember the smaller things” she said
“I guess…” he murmured
He stood there staring at the ground.
“I didn’t have it…” he suddenly burst out. “I didn’t have the ring…” his voice cracking with emotion.
"The car... "he shuddered under the weight of guilt "I lost control... I didnt even remember the ring.. It was our day.."
"Do you think that man who cut the lane... do you think he even cared?" he said.. A little angry at himself as much as the man.
"I dont know..." she said distantly.
She then turned around, tears suddenly in her eyes. As if remembering…
“It happened two days ago… 6 months of anticipation… and then…It was just there… so small.. it fell out.. still and lifeless” she said softly “I’m sorry…”
The man opened his hand and gasped. And at the same time she came forward...
They embraced. A ghost of a smile crossed his face...
As he slipped the ring on her finger.. and a tear streaked down her face.
"Thank you" she whispered.
Suddenly they were both gone.
The onlooker didn’t need to know.
“Maybe it’s the harder things… that makes life.. more worthwhile” the onlooker mumbled softly to himself.
"Its taken so easily... even for me it is hard to watch the pain.. and try and forget that duty belongs first, always.. and forever"
And he was gone.
