View Full Version : What do you think of the Soccer World cup 2010 in South Africa?
I come from South Africa where the cup is being held in 4 years time and I tell you, there is no way we will be ready! Our transport sucks and our crime rates are through the roof! I mean the bad guys have more rights then the actual people!
I just want to know if their is anyone else feels the same way as I that S.A should lose the priveledge to host the cup...for all our safties.
If I insulted any other people that come from S.A let me appoligise now but this is how I feel.

Well, if South Africa is as crappy as you say, I won't be flying out for the world cup in 4 years. I wanted to go to the next one but I wouldn't feel confortable going if crime was that bad. Is there no safe or suitable venue in all of SA?

You honestly think this topic is suitable for a debate? Well... I'm sorry to tell you that it doesn't really fit here...

And in answer to your query... The other candidates for WC 2010 included Egypt and trust me, whatever be the level of crime and poverty you have in South Africa, we have worked hard to beat that. I'm an Egyptian so I would know ;).

You should not call football soccer it should be called football all over the world The majority of American football you use your hands. England Have no chance of winning 2010 too hot LOL

I think the safest venue is going to be in Bloemfontein...nothing goes on there. Cape Town, Durban (The coastal towns) are pretty rough and Pretoria and Johannesburg are really bad spots, the cities are really...I can't describe how bad it is. I'm just sending warning now, learn to use a gun or take it away from a person. The people here are vicious!

Hmm... I don't really know. Hopefully the South African government will make some changes and improve the country, its still 4 years away right?

Finally another one that can speak afrikaans, ek's nie alleen nie! Dude before we carry on I'm a chick, I come from PTA but my parents made me move to Bloemfontein. As for Jaaging them weg...been there done that, got the knife to prove it and a cop warning. I got warned for protecting myself, what crap place is this! We should talk to...PM soon.
Thunderbolt...have you ever been to South Africa? The goverment does...let me not use that language...nothing! Our so called Vice president is standing on the door of his own corruption case. We have one of the highest aids epidemics in the world, our rape figures are unspeakable! I don't want to chase you people off, it's just a friendly warning. I hope the crime will drop but you know the saying: Believe in a miricle and you're half way there...the other half has been stolen...

No I've never been to South Africa, so I can't really say. So your saying that there is no hope? Well, anything can happen, if you say your country is filled with corruption, then hosting the 2010 Soccer World Cup is a bad idea.
I don't think the country deserves it...that's all, I hope it inproves because it's a beatiful country and shouldn't be allowed to go to waste. I really hope it changes but if it doesn't I'm gone...I can get a job anywhere in the world with Forensic Entomology...I'd probably make more money here though...

I think you won't have to worrie about what damage you'll bring to use, IMO its the other way around.
I'm gonna be going, my Dad lives over they're so I'll be able to stay at his.
Meh Pretoria's probably the best place to have it, saying that its probably got the lowest crime rate, Durban would be retarded because it has the highest, although Cape Town would be cool.
And its 4 years, alot happens in that time things could change for the better, yu got to be opptamisitc,

In my opinion I want the world Cup to be in Africa, And i trully want a african country to win it. It could be one of the biggest surprises yet to occur in the history of soccer.
well and obviously i woundn't mind either if the world cup was to take place in the US. For personal reason of course :redbiggri ... get to see the games would be without a doubt my life's dream come true.
I think its cool. Maybe itt will be more even crowd aadvantage or something. But honestly maybe Ill go get to see you and some other homies ;)

Well, for all safety reasons, it probably is a bad idea to host the World Cup in South Africa because of the crime rate there. Even if they boost security, I'm quite sure some fist fights and outbreaks will happen.
But the World Cup is in 4 years, and things can change. I mean now earth's Ozone layer is healing. Things change. So happy thoughts people! Happy thoughts!

Geez, Lex, whose side are you on?
Coming from South Africa as well, I'd like to take a totally different stance.
Yes, we have a bad crime rate. Yes, the infrastructure is still lacking. But we WILL be ready. Several stadiums are already ahead of schedule, they're working on fixing up all our roads and creating newer and better ones. Stick around, this place is going to be absolutely friggin AWESOME come 2010.
Security is being beefed up already, more stuff is happening, and according to statistics crime is on the decrease.

The cup's going to take place in every province, including Durban. I don't know where you get your information from, but Durban's crime rate's not that high. Johannesburg is probably the worst, and trust me, Pretoria's not much better.
But either way, things are improving. Don't listen to guys like Lex who want out of the country asap. See the good about this place. It's a great country. I love it.

Well my info was a tad bit old as its from a couple of years ago.
Well my Dad lives in jo'burg although I have heard of crimes going on there I've never seen them tbh, guess I'm lucky.

I like the country and all but it's not a place where I plan to spend the rest of my life...and anyway I'm a GIRL!!!!I have alot more to lose when it comes to crime. See how you like it to be attacked in your own home...I was lucky, they didn't expect me to fight back with a knife. And I got the warning for protecting my life! I am just warning people, not scaring off, they can do what they like.

I don't think right now is the time to debate this... I don't currently think that the infrastructure is right for us to host the world cup, but I will admit the steps I'm seeing being taken to improve are indeed vast and many! I was surprised to see a prtable police station a few blocks away from me the other day, and police are trying to improve crime awareness... I do think that our transport is a problem, but apparently busses are in for upgrades, and the new Taxi system is set to be initiated as early as September.
On the presidential and governmential issues... we still have yet another election coming up before 2010, so that may surprise us with the outcome.
There may be hope yet...
Okay fine I admit there have been some improvements and there might be some hope for us yet. I'll be holding thumbs for it!

I believe that everything will work out in time, because the fifa also wants the worldcup to be held in South Africa and therefore they will help where they can. Besides I think that the worldcup will have a huge positive influence on South Africa. :winking56

Suzuka... South Africa will have a huge positive effect on the world, just watch. ^_^ That's what I believe anyways.
And Lex, I'm a girl too. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences, but so have I. Me and my cousins Claire and Tracie were sexually abused by my older cousin when we were seven and five respectively. I'm more inclined to be more wary of those I know.
My brother-in-law, Brett, was also in an armed robbery a few weeks ago. He and my sister have a three-month-old baby boy and totally rely on Brett's income at the moment. You think that doesn't scare the crap out of me? My friend committed suicide because his friend was murdered, I've seen the little children who've been raped.
But you know what - it happens in the States as well, and Claire, who now lives in the UK, says that she felt safer here in Joburg at night.
If you only choose to see that bad in the world, then of course you're going to be anti. Me, I like to see the good, and in my eyes, the good being done here is outweighing the bad. Have you seen what the Joburg CBD looks like recently? Blue IQ is totally reviving Newtown, the Market Theatre is becoming more and more popular. They've turned the Cradle of Humankind into a fantastic touristy education spot that I watched them build and it's absolutely beautiful.
We're going to be OK. Simple.
And also... if we show pride in our country and what we've achieved in the past decade and a bit, then we encourage other South Africans to do the same. By becoming proud of who we are, as a nation, we then inspire the rest of the world to be proud that we are a part of it. I'm proud of my world. I couldn't survive anywhere else. I couldn't survive without biltong and pap en vleis and braai's on any day of the week. I'd die without our sun, our air, our culture, our people.
And Lex? Kinda off topic here but... You want to do forensic entymology? Did you by any chance follow the Donovan Moodley case? The guy who murdered that Leigh Mathews girl? That case was almost entirely solved by forensic entymologists. I think your career choice is friggin AWESOME. I'd have gone into forensics if I'd taken science to matric. :D

I think the World Cup will be a good opportunity to straighten some things out, I mean, the security has always been extremely tight at the WC, and lots of things have to be top notch. I don't think they would have chosen South Africa if they couldn't get things done properly, even if the situation is as bad as you portray it.

That's some pretty harsh pre-judged comments. But anyhow, i personally think it's something new and out of the monotony. No one woould have expected something like that. After Japan/Korea, Germany, now South Africa. Don't know in what shape that country is to play in but im sure in these 4 years they'll have their hands busy. Any nation deserves the right to be the host of the worlds biggest stage, la danza final, il massimo istadio. Time will tell, and we will wait.

Lex it's just so hard to imagine u as a chick with the ovrload of Kenpachi i see whenever i read ur post!! LOL!
but yeah, i see wat u mean - bein a girl in that kinda place would be more frightening.
but i don't care that the WC is in SA - as long as the players are fine and they can all play good football (and Aus deosn't get jibbed!!!) then I'll be happy. Besides, the players will stay in hotels anyway...and the ppl travelling there should be prepared beforehand...!
@vejitto3: meh...african countries are good, so u can never say they were rigged...nigeria cained it in 98...

Nice to see someone who is patriotic about their country!! Every country has it's problems... but every country has it's positive aspects as well. And to embrace both is true patriotism... the way forward-so to speak..
And it's attitudes like Saeth's that will help the country become sustainable before the world cup..
I've been to S.A before and my god.. it's a beautiful country. The weather is amazing, picturesque and the landscapes are like golf-courses... green and serene. The culture is vibrant and full of history and the people are lively. Although i got robbed at gunpoint... twice. The pop music and culture is something of true envy throughout...i miss those night clubs (club esp in Pretoria- damn! fine women!) and one word...H20!! the best and biggest outdoor party to be seen on the face of this earth! The women! i have never seen so many beautiful women at one place!! Been there twice!!(and oh my goodness... best weed second from amsterdam! but that's beside the point) I am going to South Africa for the World Cup and it's going to be one of the best holidays on my life- i can already say that!
I was born and raised in Switzerland, but my parents are from Kenya and I am proud that an African country has been granted the responsibility of hosting one of the most global and celebrative events in the world.
Remember, people didn't want the world cup in Germany because of the alarming rate of which support for the NPD was rising... who are labeled as nazi-sympathizers.
I have no doubt that South Africa will overcome it's racial inadvertency and crime rate to show the world the beauty and buoyancy of Africa...
to all critics... just wait!! you'll see!!
