Programs for subbing?

Well recently I and one other friend have decided to do subbing, not ordinary subbing or dubbing. any programs recommended?

Substation Alpha for creating subtitle files, and Virtual Dub from putting it together to make a new avi file. I know theres other programs, but thats all I've needed.
