Bleach Terms

As many know, some things were translated into the english form (such as reaitsu to spiritual pressure) and some weren't. I myself purchase the licenced manga so I thought it might be informal to let you know what to hear later in the series.

Shinigami = Soul Reaper
Zanpaktou = Zanpaktou
Reaitsu = Spiritual Pressure
Kidou (sp?) = Kidou
Bakudo = Baduko
Hollow = Hollow
Plus = Whole (get it, hollow...whole? HAHAHAHA! :face82: )
Konso = Konso

Mod Soul = Mod Konpaku
Squad = Company
Captian/Taicho = Captian
Vice-Captian/Fuku-Taicho = Assistant Captian
Gotei 13 = 13 Protection Companies (not sure, I'll hafta re-check)
Zanpaktou's Name = Same thing
Zanpaktou's Command = English Version
Shikai = Shikai
Bankai = Bankai
Shihakusho = Shihakusho (A Soul Reaper's uniform)
Orihime's Commands = Same thing (I'm only assuming this. It has the Japanese in the manga with a parenthesis translation. Wait for episode 13)
Seireitei = Seireitei
Rukongai = Rukongai

I'm pretty sure I'm missing some terms so feel free to nudge me if I did and I'll go looking for it. I'll update the thread as the dub continues/as more manga volumes come out.

Thats the problem with people who don't like dubs. On the one hand, there will be those who say they should keep Japanese words like shinigami and gotei 13 but at the same time they hate the fact that voice actors can't properly pronounce Japanese words that were kept. You can't have it both ways so no matter what a dub does, the dubbers choice in these situations will never satisfy people closed to any modification of their sacred anime.

My comments were not directed towards you. You seem reasonable and you probaably agree that changes that make the voice actors more comfortable will make the dub better. The problem is that if they had changed those words to English, less reasonable people would have complained about changing Japanese words they had become familiar with (like the whole shinigami/death god/soul reaper debate).

I'm really on the fence on the issue since to me the issue is really about which word (be it English or Japanese) is easier to pronounce for an average American. Words like kido, shinigami, shikai, and bankai can easily be said correctly by even the worst English pronouncers. On the other hand words like zanpakutou are cumbersome if you don't know the language or don't regularly hear or say the word. A mix of Japanese and English is best but only if the Japanese words being kept are easy to pronounce.

well, if we really want to be western here... i think i can explain it..

a squad of men consists of 8 men...
a company of men consists of 100+supporting personnel (think Century)...

this is how the western military works, if you want me to go into details, post here...

A company, consisting of around one or two hundred men, is led by an officer with the rank of captain.

Haha. Naming it "13 protection companies" makes it sound like some bodyguard for-hire business.

Sereitei is larger than you'd think. Each gate (from another gate) takes several days to reach (eg. from the West gate to the East gate), as stated by Yoruichi.

I'm glad to see a decent amount of the terminology preserved from the port from Japanese to English, though.
Might obtain the pilot have a looksy.

I do have one question: How are the kidou and bakudo spells pronounced? (eg. "Bakudou no Ichi; Sai")

The first page clearly shows that shikai and bankai have been kept in the VIZ translations. Any move to change this would be beyond stupid since shikai and bankai are so much easier to pronounce and write than initial release and final release.

Remember, that they have to maintain synchronicity with the lip movements. Though, there have been instances, where people talk in the Japanese version where the lips don't move at all (and I mean, at all, not just flapped a couple of times and stopped) ...

Its not really that bad.

While I am kind of disapointed about some of the things (E.G Vice captain to assistant captain. Squad to company).

However these are minor details that I will probobly get used to. I'm still happy at the way the dub has turned out and I hope it continues to impress me.

Zanpakuto is pronounced "zan-pa-ku-to" or "zan-pak-to" if you want to sound a bit more casual. Gotei = "go-tay", shinigami = "shi-ni-ga-mi" or "shin-gami" for a more relaxed sound. OH MY GOD IT'S MELTING MY MIND!

The main things to remember in Japanese is that "suke" is usually pronounced "ski" and that "tsu" isn't "teh-soo" but one flowing syllable, like "ryu" which isn't "rye-oo" or "ree-oo", but actually "yoo" with a "r" at the start... again as one syllable.

On the other hand, English is a lot less logical, I mean "Squad" is pronounced "skwad", and if you pronounced it phonetically, it'd be "sqwoo-add". It's probably why so many Americans spell "tongue" as "tounge"... Tongue looks like it should be pronounced "ton-gyew", but then again "tounge" would be "ta-ow-nge"... The phonetic spelling would be "tung" but that just looks like a caveman's name or something...

(Very nice lesson) Anyways to tell you the truth I just read the information on this website and learn about the show.What I'm trying to say is I really never seen bleach until the dubb.I just use the language I'm uses too and stick with it.Until I learn japanese then I will watch the japanese version.

Well it's fair enough if the US dub was the first one you heard. I mean, a lot of people hate the Evangelion dub, but I watched the entire series and the movie with the American voices, and to me that is just how they sound. I couldn't get used to the Japanese voices after that.

Hopefully VIZ will realize that those long names sound as stupid as we think they are. I really hope that they don't incorporate those long, dumb names and stay true to Bleach as we have.

The only real complaint I have is that they could've provided definitions for all of the terms that they left untranslated. Pretty much any unknowing viewer is gonna be left in the dark as to the meanings of those terms. It kinda stinks if you think about it.
