Astronomers find distant, fluffy planet

WASHINGTON - The largest planet ever found orbiting another star is so puffy it would float on water, astronomers said Thursday. The newly discovered planet, dubbed HAT-P-1, is both the largest and least dense of the nearly 200 worlds astronomers have found outside our own solar system.

HAT-P-1 orbits one of a pair of stars in the constellation Lacerta, about 450 light-years from Earth.

"This new planet, if you could imagine putting it in a cosmic water glass, it would float," said Robert Noyes, a research astrophysicist with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The planet, a gas giant, is probably a puffed up ball of hydrogen and helium.

HAT-P-1 is an oddball planet, since it orbits its parent star at just one-twentieth of the distance that separates Earth from our own sun. While Earth takes a year to orbit the sun, the newly found planet whips around its star once every 4.5 days.

Astronomers believe HAT-P-1 may belong to an entirely new class of planets, along with a second, smaller distant world that's also puffier than theories would have predicted, Noyes said.

Astronomers used a network of telescopes in Arizona and Hawaii to discover the planet. Its parent star is too faint to see with the naked eye but can be spied with binoculars.

What are your thoughts?

Want to see this fluff ball in the ocean..and if we do someday create a ship that can reach this planet...won't we just go through it?

Is there any gravity on this planet? or can it just be considered a bubble from the left over gasses of the star that has been captured in it's orbit

Want to see this fluff ball in the ocean..
if it's a planet, it wont fit here on earth

and i dont think it's planet... prolly just mojacko who lost his way in the space... ^^

lol... I dunno about that puffy planet, maybe it's real o like what azumi-san said..... just mojacko.... or totoro!!!^^

but if the astonomers can really give evidence about this then it's probably cool...but it would be cooler if they could get aliens...if it's true...XD

Wow.. it actually sounds like a pretty cute planet. =)

Acctually if the planet didn't have gravity then it wouldn't be able to hold on to all its gasses. Also Saturn is less dense than water so it too would be able float on water.

indeed..

But this must mean that it must be pretty dense in it's centre to produce a gravity field to keep together.

umm yes it would have a dense core

It would probably be impossible to get through the atmosphere if we ever got there. Anything that goes into it will probably get squished.

It's probably just one really big dense cloud.

It's kinda cute. I wanna just hop in it and hope I can float and stuff.

One problem is that it's super hot so my skin gets vaporized. :(
