this is a toughy. Moraly, i would say it is, definitely.
But some may argue that spending all that money on somebody that has wronged society. instead of using that money on him, y not feed the poor, or fix roads for those who have not caused trouble for society.

criminals arent worth the time and effort,
everyone makes conscious decisions, they chose theirs and have to suffer the consequences
however, i think that if society improves there will be less crime, so its better to fix the problem at its source

There are 3 purposes of jail.
1. To Deter
a: To Deter Society from doing the crime
b: to Deter the offender from doing the crime
2. To reheibilitate the person by making them a useful person in sociey
3. To keep society out of danger from the person in jail
Is it worth it?
Yes of corse, its better to have them in jail with a chance of making them useful then to have them running around doing crimes or just killing them(you can't just kill them all especially for smaller crimes. In Canada we don't even have the Death Penilty which is okay because I think the Death Penilty is wrong anyways).
ADDED:
For the people who just can't stop doing crime they get to be classified as a Dangerous Offender(meaning they show no signs of remourse or rehibilitation) and get a Indeterminate Sentence(Meaning are in jail until they are found to be able to be rehiliblitated(they get a chance every 10 yrs or something) or they stay in jail until they die). Remember when someone is sentenced to life in prision that menas they get 25yrs in prision not all their life.
Only a Indeterminate Sentence is when you are in till you die(or are determined to be able to be rehiliblitated later on at the times they check on you). And you can only get a Indeterminate Sentence if you are classified as a Dangerous Offender.

seriously can you succeed after going to jail
califorian stat 2/3 of inmates return
our prisons are eating away more money than our education system, there is a serious problem there
either up and anty the death penalty or make prison less desireable

Read what I added to my post above that should anwser some of your questions.
About eating up the money thing. Theres not much you can do you have to seperate criminals from society. Also if you can make a person a useful person(rehibilitate them) in society then its worth that money used.

meh, im not concern about rehabiliating criminals, its nice and all as long as it doesnt waste tax payers money
my concern is primarily on the conditions of prison, from wat i hear, they get great health care and some even get nice tv's with cable

True but its the Gov't that controls it not us so what can you do :\
While we control it in a way because law is suppose to reflect the majority opinion of society. I mean we personally(just 1 person) can't change it.

where are you from?
in cali we have the three strikes rule
3 felonies and its life in prison, i think that death is a better alternative but =/
the whole system in general cost too much, with all the court appeals and stuff
i blame all of socities on population, small population = less competition for jobs, less poverty, the government can better help the people stuff like that

it rarely is
a person is the way that person is.
your not god, so don't change it.
in SOME casses it might be worth it, but i'd be more like advising. not changing, thats something the person themselve must do
^agree, like many other things we have the power to change... but in the end forced or goodwill change can bring big pain or great joy. Lets gamble.
prison is on another level of change.. kinda like war.
