View Full Version : Vietnam Veteran reception...

Back during the Vietnam War, the credibility gap that was created caused much tension between the government and the public, to the point where there were violent protests against the war. The soldiers who returned when the U.S. pulled out of the war were greeted as they landed, but only by friends and family. It's not their fault that they were forced into the war either by draft, or by orders. The people who came to hate the war were originally supporters of it as they too were afraid of the spread of Communism. Why should the soldiers who faced hell in a war that the public originally supported be treated like they were the bad guys? I know that there were atrocities committed by the U.S, but does the public have to be so cold to the soldiers who fought for them? The government was the cause. They passed the resolution that gave the power to send the troops into Vietnam. It should have been the gov't that received the cold shoulder not the troops.

Hmm... Well, you may say that the government needs to be cold shouldered for their actions, but really, there's nothing you can do about it. And I agree with lightshinigami when she (I think she's a she) says that people would rather take the "easy way out". You have to remember though, this happens all the time, not just in the war of vietnam.

i remember in my world history class, my teacher talked to us about vietnam. the guys who came back got spit on and were called traitors. i feel that was unfair. these people were risking their lives. they were just following orders. we are in the same situation in iraq.

Same of you but...
"We are wasting billions and billions on this war, people, soldiers dying... When we could be feeding and educating them..."

Mm, I agree with you all, but I agree with Ichigo k when he says we should be using that money for education for a better future, not war. I AM quite disgusted with how the vetrens were treated though.
