I like them both a lot, but if I had to choose I'd go for SW. Sw has Yoda! "get down do you?"

ZeroWind
06-14-2005, 03:28 PM
Well i too like both Star Wars and LOTR. But you can't rea;;y compare the two series. The thing about SW is that it mainly focused on Anikan or Luke and that was just about it. However the character development in LOTR focused on many more characters. In the end i would chose LOTR because the acting was good in all three and the acting was horrible in some SW like the "Noooo Nooo , You will die" by Palp.

Nova
06-14-2005, 03:56 PM
Ye, I agree with ZeroWind with the part that you can't really compare the two, though...I disagree that you picked LOTR ;)

I perfer Star Wars because I was never really interested in LORR, my Mother was, but I never was. I've watched the first two...after them I thought, "Well now, that was a total waste of time." Sowwy :(

Both SW and LOTR are great. Each have endless amounts of work put into them (depth, history, etc...) But I'd go for LOTR having read the books before seeing the movies, which made them even better to watch. Also didn't like the dramatic "Noooooooo!!" line at the end of Ep 3... thought it was a bit cheesy.

06-15-2005, 11:50 PM
I liked LOTR way better than Star Wars... Hmm, I'm not too sure why. I geuss it's because I like the classic star wars more... But now Yoda is more huggable ^_^

greenrider85
06-16-2005, 12:10 AM
i think the only good thing going for the new star wars is yoda..he is so cute.. other than that i don't like it.. the first one was boring made me sleepy.

yeah the old ones are so much better then the new ones for the star wars movies

greenrider85
06-16-2005, 12:27 AM
the acting isn't that great..

ningo
06-16-2005, 01:25 AM
The acting was never great; but the script for the new star wars is appauling; both the old star wars trilogy and LOTR are great; if i had to choose one out of those two, i would choose star wars; not to say LOTR isn't an amazing book and adaptation of book, merely that the original star wars(pre special edition) was an incredible set of films. If we are talking about whole set of satrwars films, or special editions of original trilogy, then LOTR takes the throne as best set of films.

books: LOTR - you can't beat the depth of story and the imagined languages

movies: Star Wars - the entire story is made for the movies originally, the action is as important as the plot... so of cos it works the best when it is shown in movies, instead of books... ^^

greenrider85
06-16-2005, 04:31 PM
i think it was cool that tolkien made his own languages out of his head.. i hear in some schools you can learn some of those languages.

Shocking. Just saw AFI's Tribute to George Lucas and I'm in my PRIME right now. <3

Star Wars saga > Lord of the Rings triology HANDS DOWN.

Without Star Wars, there wouoldn't even BE a Lord of the Rings! Granted both have great stories, but Star Wars is a classic! The definition of science fiction! You can't beat that!

Nope, Star Wars rocks the universe, even Middle Earth. :3

umm... i'm pretty sure tolkien wrote LOTR before star wars ever existed... also, the original idea for star wars was stolen from akira kurosawa's film the hidden fortress.

me? LOTR all the way, tolkien rules!

Still don't care, Seen all of them, like both.
Equality wins.
Though, simple seen: LOTR was grafically less impressive than SW, but I liked the story better. I do think that LOTR could have been better if the pace would been better. I just didn't like some gaps.
In SW I don't even TRY to count the gaps.
Music: definitly LOTR. SW-music is already soooo old.
It keeps being catchy though.
The dialogs in LOTR are waaay better as the dialogs in SW.
Don't misunderstand: SW is written great, but the actors just can't seem to get the feelings right.
LOTR is pretty good on this area.

In total I don't like making a judgement, both are great movies and I enjoyed both of them.

Well, friend. Tolkien published The Hobbit in the late 1930's, but the argument isn't about the novels, is it? Everyone else is arguing about the movies. And what I'm saying (and so did Peter Jackson) is that without George Lucas' development with graphics from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings wouldn't be the mass phenomeon it is.

And this is why, in my humble opinion, Star Wars kicks ass. More so than Lord of the Rings.

So, thus, the Lord of the Rings' films were inspired by Star Wars, just like the Hidden Fortress inspired Star Wars. Several movies are based off other movies. Inspiration is like air. Everybody breathes it in.

Has anyone read the books beyond the movies? I must admit that I absolutely love Lord of the rings. Books and Movies. its depth is great and development and plot are astounding. However, that being said, I’ve read almost the entire star wars expanded universe (being an uber nerd) cept the remaining newer young Jedi knights. The fact that you can expand on the movies into more developed plots, as well as deeper storylines and better sequencing These cant be compared on the same plain. If you are comparing any three star wars trilogy books or movies to any star wars three movies or books, you will find that Tolkien spent far more time and energy in his works than any of the simple trilogy. Yet star wars fans can go much deeper (even though lotr has unfinished tales, untold tales, the silmarilion, and the Christopher tolkien releases and analysis) and therefore star wars as an overall subject wins. (the best star wars trilogy btw is by tim Zahn… Sooo awesome)

I liked the LotR books, but not the movies. I thought there was way too much over acting. I've only seen the 3 new Star Wars movies, so I can't really say if it's a better series than LotR. Already knowing how the last three movies would play out without having seen the original 3 kind of ruined the series for me. Plus I didn't like the last 3. Lucas didn't really have to put forth any effort knowing millions of people (including me) would go see the movies anyway.

LOTR no question, I am a tolkien obsessive and love his books...

but the movie was a bit of a let down compared with the books but they where a hard match, although I still like the movie, but I read the books when I was 7 so I am a bit biased (sp?)

LOTR had better story and endings etc. they had more tec and had actual places even though SW places are amazing for using green screens constantly.

I like them both. Lord of the Rings is a great work of imagination and creativity, and it did influence the fantasy genre a lot (not supreme, but a lot). Star Wars is also a very creative story that really lets the imagination fly (hence the amount of books, video games, movies etc.)..

As for the movies.. eh, I suppose Star Wars take it for me. The LOTR movies are no doubt very good, but I like the subtle way SW makes me think.

But in any case, they are great stories.

Hello. I would say STARWARS is much better than lord of the rings:

VISUALS: Starwars beats it,
STORY LINE: Starwars HELLA beats it,
ACTING: Lord of the rings wins in this one, but who cares when you got such a great story?
MUSIC:..........Starwars!

"No, I am your father"... haha priceless.

Sahiden
07-26-2005, 05:06 PM
I'd go for LOTR really...
SW was great while it lasted. But the storyline really showed too many flaws and a lot of plot holes.
As a writer and storyseeker I really really have to say SW could have been 1000 times better written.
Sure SW is impressive at first, but it lacks the storyline and especially the acting talent of the actors to make the dialogs worth.
Objectivly seen, LOTR really is better.

I'm not dealing with the music as I really don't care for any music (however I recognise it's addition to the whole thing) nor do I like any particular kind of music. So I really don't know on this part.

They are both better than decent, but if you are talking about the older StarWars, that win, I think the old ones were MUCH better than the newer ones. If it is the newer ones, LotR wins. I don't know why I like the older starwars better, maybe because they focused more on plot and characters more than big explosions and spectacular fights.

That's true, it was in the old one when we heard the famous lines "I am your father" after all, yet even though the old ones are better I stick with LOTR.

07-31-2005, 08:37 PM
The were both done nearly perfectly. LOTR could've been more to the books but as it was it was awesome!!! And SW was really good and dark. Can't wait for the directors release for SWIII

well comparing lotr book to star wars is even impossible because tolkien really almost created a whole universe there, first reading it was so great.

the lotr movie can't keep up with theb ook but still its a whole masterpiece while star wars has up and downs.

LOTR hands down... Star Wars episode 4 on its own might stand as being better than LOTR, but by the time Star Wars ep 3 came out, I was bored out of my mind with that series. Of course, the LOTR books are simply on a higher level than either movie series.

last two lotr were the best, but then star wars is a classic!

think it would have to be star wars because i thought episode 3 was rather good, but then both the lotr were so good :? Ach ill have to side with the Scots guy as a main character and go star wars :P

btw, did anyone else notice how good the light saber fights were in episode 3 and then how bad they were in episode when obi wan fought darth again?

Starwars, just... awesome. It was the perfect film for young kids... a sci fi fairytale... the dashing knight and a princess... and the magic of the force... its a beautiful story. and also probably had most influence on my life... im not a star wars geek really... i like it,but dont have any merchandise.. i just love the magic. truly a masterpiece...

I would have to pick LOTR the books. i am a scarily massive fan of all things Tolkien. The sheer size of the work is enough to knock star wars off its pedastle. But then you put on top of that the imagination of the works, the research etc. that went into it, the fantastic music from the movies lol...yup, LOTR is a winner.

But i guess it really is personal choice in the end lol.
