View Full Version : Teleportation Advancment
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/10/04/teleportation.reut/index.html
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Beaming people in "Star Trek" fashion is still in the realms of science fiction, but physicists in Denmark have teleported information from light to matter bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality.
Until now scientists have teleported similar objects such as light or single atoms over short distances from one spot to another in a split second.
But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter.
"It is one step further because for the first time it involves teleportation between light and matter, two different objects. One is the carrier of information and the other one is the storage medium," Polzik explained in an interview on Wednesday.
How sweet is this...I expect to not be walking anywhere within 10 to 20 years..

Indeed. This looks like a big step towards teleportation of people in the future. I wouldnt be suprised in 20 years what they will have accomplished.

I would, Star Trek form of teleportation is very unrealistic. Guest how many atoms are in a cup of coffee? Guest how many there is in a human body; there are just too many things that can go wrong for it to be practical. I don’t think it will ever be possible.

It would be awesome, and I'm sure I'd take advantage of it if/when it comes to be. But to be honest, I think I would wait until the technology had been out for a few years and perfected. That's something you REALLY don't want to have an accident with. (The Fly, anyone? ;p)

more like 10 years.... and with reference to the DOOM movie... parts of u might end up somewhere else during the teleportation

agreed, lacking a bit in detail. but i've heard about these sorts of things for a while and have maintained an interest.
This would be a dream - especially to all the lazy ppl out there
that include me XD lolz...

10 years if you’re being optimistic. Long after we’re dead if you’re being realistic.
No more waking up early in the morning to catch the bus, No more rushing to work, No more time wasted…a man can dream, a man can dream…
This could be used as a weapon if its "Wireless" :P. This is really dangerous technology xD.

its possible....its possible.....
I can do it..
And with this technology it probably wouldn't be practically usable for a long time...But as they say these are the first steps towards making it feasible technology...
And i wonder if the next internet hardware system will be made out of something like this...
NO LAG FTW!!!!

It would be something like that because you'd get the entire episode in one packet instead of many packets like you do at the moment through the web.

ahhh yes teleportation, the new way to make the American population even fatter.
CAn someone please explain to me what is meant in the quote of the article, because normally i can get these things but i didn't understand it in this case.
Basically before they've been able to transport something like a light beam or a single atom over distances..
But the break through that they've made now is that they can teleport more matter easily..So basically it's the beginnings of the whole technology it's where they'll base future research off of and will eventually one day teleport anything.

i doubt they'd allow norm pplz to utilise it tho.
The country that creates it will keep it, military purposes etc.

Of course, with technology advancing, anything is nearly possible. I wonder if there will be side effects with this new teleportation technology, they better test it out properly first before using it.
I'll love to use this kind of technology, it would make anybody's life much easier.

Thats true, but somehow even though the other country is gonna keep it as tightly as it can, the information will leak and every other 3rd world country that finds itself important will have one. I dont think its a good idea for the most part, Even if they worked on it for 10 or 20 years and was dubbed safe for transport, its not stable enough. To bring enough light and matter form one place to another safely is a difficult task and i think it will be too dangerous even if they perfected the art.
Sorry >> science guy here xD

Even though it may be first used for military applications it will eventually move into the civillian market. A lot of inovative technoligy has been formed for the military and then passed on to the public. I think that this breakthrough is amazing but... I dont think I would ever use on... I mean.. computers loose files all the time.. what is to stop them from loosing your data?!?! :S

well it would need to be one hell of a lot more tested before i'd be willing to zap to another location even if its in ten years or twenty that they manage man'd teleports it'll take years before they work the bugs out.
would you jump in a machine made by microsoft willing to bet there wont be a blue screen of death splatered with you all over it?

Lol no i would not buy a teleportation machine made by m@ for at least 2 years, i mean they got great software but its buggy especially at the beggining as it is well known.
@Ai thx thought it was something like that just it was worded weirdly.
@arrn well yea it'll be for military first, pretty much everything gunna be military first, like being able to download information into your brain, usefull on the battlefield and in training, lol just look at the first matrix, woot i know how to fly a helicopter. There are quite a few household items that went through the military first.
@thunderbolt is anyone else thinking the Fly here?

I just thought of something today in History class while the teacher was talking about the A-Bomb and Hiroshima in WWI. It you could teleport anything that would mean that warfare on the battle field would have a lot faster casualty rates. Think about it. You get there really fast due to teleportation then the enemy could teleport to you. Or something worse could happen. They could teleport nuclear bombs over contries in an instant and blwo them up. If you think of it that way then teleportation can take its time.....

But I think when they finally get to transporting human matter they will have researched it so much and done that many trials that it'll be safe. Not too mention the computer technology at that point will be...Ultra pwn.

Imagine. No more loading screen. "faints". But I agree. By the time its released it better be perfect cause if they screw up they will get sued out of all their money my the families who lost people. You could end up like the guy in the movie Tron. Stuck inside your computer. Although that would be cool sometimes. Then it would actually be first person shooting games. With unlimited lives lol. Anyways tchnlogy should be very very good in 20 years....
This will be amazing technology if used correctly but as some have said, it could be used for a weapon. Although I think that before they make it advanced enough to be used to teleport a weapon they will have discovered a shield to stop things teleporting through.

Flying would make a whole life a lot easier. We already invented flying machines right? I can see in the future that people are going to invent some kind of device that allows humans to fly, lets say, a jetpack for example. Of course, I'll assume that would be a lot easier than teleportation, without all that science and atom stuff.

Teleportation certainly sounds cool and interesting. But with every new technology invented, there'll always be a group of people misusing it. Look at the internet itself. So many computers are prone to virus attack even with the latest antivirus programmes installed. That's to say, no matter how safe the inventors think teleportation is, there will always be some setbacks.

Yeah. If the technology would fall into the wrong hands then It would pretty much be the end of the world. However, teleportation is teh pwn! No passports, no large cash for plane rides, no jet lag nor sea sickness.

Whoops, my mistake. Didn't read it properly.
Though flying humans is a good way of transportation though.
I dunno. Because flying we have to deal with attitude sickness and G-forces among other things.
I think that if teleportation becomes a viable means of teleportation between one sender and a reciever then it will be more comfortable and easier then flying.

I dont think that I would walk through a teleportaion machine, personally. But it has it's uses. Imagine, your sitting at your computer or game sytem for about 3 hours, you've become hungry. You look at the screen of your system, click a button and a round clylinder tray comes out. You press more buttons and bang you have a dinner or pizza appear right in front of your eye s. No more waiting. One second its not there, the next it is. Plus, maybe instant snail mail. lol.

Awesome thought there dude.
Yeah why not, use teleportation for things like food or deliveries.

:lol
Just like the simpsons episode where bart and a fly mix together.
But it should be useful technology to have. ~Star Trek style.
That would be nice...Just teleport things into space..
It would certainly make space travel a hell of a lot more cheaper and viable to do.
Most of the cost of space travel and most of the energy used is getting the shuttle and its occupants and a certain amount of weight out of the atmosphere.
With teleportation you could just zap everything up to the international space station..Build a spaceship in space easily then take off for mars.

lol, I just imagined one side sent a bomb to the other side.
I highly doubt that we will be able to do teleportation anytime soon. To teleport something you would have to destory the object at point A then create it again at point B. Then to carry the info over through some quantum physics mumble jumbo that no one except probably 10 people on the planet gets.
They're only able to do single atoms right now, but if you are going to be optimistic, then in about 50 years USP would be out of service and we'll be teleporting packages to each other.
Here's the link where I got my info from.
http://science.howstuffworks.com/teleportation.htm
Nice Azn.
I suppose a question to then ask would be that since it has to destroy an object at point A when it repears at Point B is it still the exact same object as before.
If i go through a teleporter when i come out the other side will i still be me or a carbon copy that doesn't have my original "Soul'
Munky
10-17-2006, 12:28 PM
lol, you might enter point A alive and come out point B dead. Your soul will be lost in the quantum physics mumbo jumbo state of matter thingy.
I wont be suprised when I'll be about 75 years old and still they were only able to teleport molecules instead of atoms >.<

too many disadvantages. one america would definitly get fatter. there's all ready too many fat people at my school. 2 easy weapons transport like Nukes, the Atom bomb and hydrogen bomb not to mention guns.
