Who was that and what do you think happened to him or her?

It can't be Nemu, she was created by Mayuri, the current 12th squad captain, unless she was created during Urahara's time as captain, but I can't see Nemu ranking higher than Mayuri if she was vice-captain for Urahara.

An unsolvable Bleach mystery, perhaps? :eek13:

mayuri was the vice when urahara was the captain, and when he left mayuri became the captain and nemu became his vice captain

right ... thinking the same... Yoruichi said that Urahara were a captain (I think it was in chapter 130).. and I think Mayuri should have been the Vize-Captain.... after Urahara left and Nemu was created he became Captain and Nemu vize-Captain.

It makes sense. If you think of it this way, it's just like the rankings in the army or navy. When one leader leaves, like the lieutenant for example, then the sub-lieutenant takes over as the lieutenant. So, I'm guessing the shinigami divisions are similar to that as well.

So the same should apply to Zaraki Kenpachi and 11th division. However. Zaraki was a commoner and he killed the captain so he became the captain and promoted the midget (Yachiru) as his vice-captain.
My point is you do not have to be the vice-captain to be promoted. Tousen had explanied the rules, either of the three could have happened after Urahara was exiled.
