So.. It's my first post here ever! *drumroll* And what is it about? Fanfiction, that's right. >_> Yup. So me.
Anyways, I came up with this idea, inspired by a talk I had with my beta, and I dedicate this little ficlet to her. Notice that it's the firt time ever this fic is seen ANYWHERE. So this is not only about me making debut here in CB, but also for "The nightly wanderings" showing up in internet for the very first time.
The last thing before we start... Don't bite me too hard, please. ^^;
The nightly wanderings
He couldn’t fall asleep. Her soft steady breathing annoyed him greatly, it seemed to mock his awakened state. Oh, she could very well sleep soundly and peacefully – unlike he, apparently.
She was lying on her mattress in a curled up position, snuggling a bunny-plushie she had got from Ichigo on her birthday and dressed in a light lilac yukata.
The image reminded him so much about a carefree kindergarten kid that he couldn’t help but to smile to himself.
He got onto his feet. Maybe a little walking around would make him feel more sleepy.
He only wished that he would not bump into Byakuya… Although the captain had accepted their relationship he still didn’t want to meet his cold glare in the middle of the night. After all he was under Byakuya-taichou’s roof.
His feet made a soft padding sound as he walked on the soft wooden floor. A glass of water would be perfect just now. If only he could remember where the kitchen was again…
After wandering along the dark empty corridors for about half an hour, he finally managed to find what he was looking for – after all, he was no Zaraki. The cool water satisfied his thirst. Already he felt a lot better. Not near as restless as before. He ought to go back to Rukia’s room. Maybe now the sleep would come to claim him. He was reaching forward to the door when it suddenly slid open before him.
The two males gazed at each other in utter silence.
“What the…?”
“Ichigo?”
“Renji?”
“What the heck are you doing in Soul Society?!”
“What the heck are you doing at Rukia’s in the middle of the night!?”
Neither of them replied to each other’s questions, instead they chose to determinedly stare at the opposite walls, willing away the slight blush from their cheeks.
“So…”
“Uhhh…”
“If you don’t answer my question, I won’t answer yours”, Renji suggested.
“Deal”, Ichigo hastily agreed.
An awkward silence was broken when Renji startled with a small gasp.
The red-head turned wildly around.
“Renji, you’re here again? Oh, have you seen Ichigo? He wandered off…”
Renji made room in the doorway, revealing a seemingly sleepy Rukia.
“Oh there you are.” The tiny female flashed a smile and walked over to the orange-haired young man. Shamelessly she wrapped her arms around Ichigo’s body, snuggling close to his chest. Embarrassed Ichigo tried his best to ignore Renji’s widened eyed stare.
“Let’s go back to bed”, she whispered sleepily.
His blush darkened a bit.
And then they all startled when a cold voice drawled:
“Why is there a meeting in my kitchen in the middle of the night?”
“Byakuya!”
“Nii-sama…”
“Kuchiki-taichou!”
Kuchiki Byakuya stood calmly in the doorway, next to Renji, one eyebrow raised.
“I came just to get myself glass of water”, Renji hastily explained.
“And I was just about to go to bed after getting myself a glass of water”, Ichigo muttered.
“Ichigo was taking long so I came to drag him back to bed”, Rukia mumbled against the said young man’s chest.
Renji made a gagging sound at that.
“I see”, Byakuya said then.
Ichigo was busy exploring the floor with his gaze.
Silence drawled on.
“Renji.”
The red-haired vice-captain startled.
“You know I hate it when you make me wait.”
“I’m sorry, Kuchiki-taichou”, he stammered, blushing.
Ichigo’s mouth fell open.
‘What the - ?’
“Let’s go back.”
“Yeah.”
Byakuya turned around and walked away, Renji trailing his steps like a puppy.
“Good night, Nii-sama, Renji!” Rukia chirped after the two.
“Good night, Rukia”, Byakuya wished, not bothering to turn to look at his little sister.
“Try to get some sleep as well”, Renji muttered.
‘I know I won’t’, he added in his thoughts.
‘I know you won’t’, Byakuya thought smugly to himself, glancing at Renji from the corner of his eye.
Ichigo stared mutely after the pair.
What had that just now been? Maybe… Could it be that…
He paled.
No. He definitely did not want to know.
“Hypocrite”, Rukia muttered.
“Huh?”
The female shinigami tilted her head back so that she was able to study his face.
“Renji’s such a hypocrite. Telling us to get some sleep… Hmph. Like Nii-sama would let him sleep.”
Seeing the utterly shocked expression on Ichigo’s face Rukia smiled slightly.
“Don’t bother yourself over it too much”, she advised. “Just get used to seeing Renji around here.”
The tiny woman yawned and buried her face into the front of his t-shirt. She smiled to herself as she felt Ichigo’s strong arms being wrapped around her form.
Ichigo figured that he might as well embrace her now, when there no longer was any audience.
“Carry me”, Rukia breathed into his chest with another yawn.
“What, the mighty Kuchiki Rukia can’t walk herself?”
“Shut up, Ichigo. I’m tired. Besides, it’s romantic.”
Romantic. He did not understand women.
Ichigo grumbled to himself but picked up the tiny female none the less. Holding her tightly against his chest, he left the dark kitchen behind heading back to Rukia’s room.
