Yeah, I checked to see if this CONTROVERSIAL and very well DEBATABLE topic already has its thread. It does not. So, let us begin.
I am doing a research project and I must present a debatable topic with my own opinions in it. It would be very helpful to see opinions of our CB members! (am i genius or what?) Anyways, I have about 2 weeks to finish this, so let us see what I can gather up in 2 weeks of CB debate! It would help me much, and plus, it helps me open up my mind so it's easier to present and type my paper with an open mind!
Back to topic, if you don't know what EUTHANASIA is, it is the intentional taking of a life of another person through compassionate reasoning. Confused? Read on and you will get it. >>My initial opinion towards euthanasia is that I support it. My reasons to support it go well beyond theory and what others say. My family has experienced a chance of euthanasia already.
My brother-in-law's mother has been brain-dead for decades. She started losing it, mentally, ever since she lost her husband. Her husband died in war and she went crazy after that. Her kids took care of her for over 10 years. Since then, all she can do is sit there, say a few words once in a while, walk and eat with assistance, and sleep. When she does speak, it is all nonsense. But even these didn't last. After about 5 years of this, she completely stopped talking. She can no longer go to the restroom or eat voluntarily. She was a vegetable and completely brain dead, no longer aware of her surroundings, or maybe not even be conscious of anything for all we know. The liveliest thing she did at this point was stare into space and sleep. Her sons and daughters still wanted to take care of her. They did so for about 5 years.
My family broke relations with theirs because we had disagreements. My parents (in their 50s) argued that their mom's life was soon over, and that they should help her end it. As cruel as that might sound, it was true. Her being alive only caused so much burden for her children. My parents told them to put themselves into their mother's position. Would they want to live anymore if they were like that? Would they like to cause trouble for their children? Wouldn't they rather die than live like that, unable to react to your surroundings, unable to move, unable to interact with your kids? Those were my parents' arguements with them.
Their family, however, disagreed with my parents because the love their mother and couldn't bear to do anything that would harm her. They loved her and didn't want her to pass away. They despised and hated my parents for saying such thing because to them, their mother is right there with them everyday and even if she is like that, she is still with them. They don't want to let that go. Because of their hate towards my parents, my family and theirs stopped talking to each other, until 2 weeks ago. Two weeks ago, their mother passed away. We met at the funeral and dropped the past.
2 weeks later, I am doing a research on the topic of euthanasia. I agree with the practice of euthanasia for these reasons:
-The will of one's life is one's own decision
-Living without a will to live will only cause a burden to those in your life
-Life should not end with suffering
Yes, I am aware that some will argue, claiming euthasia is murder and suicide (assisted). I still support it.
