United on the desert
He mutely stared at her. There she was, in the endless desert of Hueco Mundo, the plain cloak draped over her shoulders, the shrill wind tossing around her raven locks and her tiny hand wrapped around Sode no Shirayuki’s hilt. Ichigo could barely grasp what she was yelling for he still had hard time realising that she actually was there, standing just before him.
Not a hallucination nor a mirage, neither an illusion. Absently he brushed the blood from under his nose and observed his now crimson tinted fingers. The blood was for real. She did punch me. The punch had been for real. She did punch me. She was for real.
A strange warmness started to spread all over him as the realisation finally dawned on him. She was for real. Rukia was here, now crouched down onto his level. She was here in front of him for real.
“Why didn’t you wait until I got back”, he heard her yell. He recognised an emotion flashing in her blue eyes and understood her anger.
The message was faintly lingering in the air around her, only for him to hear.
“Why didn’t you wait for me? I was worried...”
“... Well, I wasn’t sure if you would come back”, Ichigo replied, watching closely at the upset expression on Rukia’s face.
“I would have definitely come back!”
Those words took him by surprise.
“No matter what price I would have had to pay!!”
Ichigo’s mouth fell slightly open. Had she truly indented to say this much?
“I would have definitely come back, no matter price I would have had to pay.. I would have returned by your side.”
“Renji and I, the both of us were planning to do so from the start!” her voice quieted down, softened.
“Why didn’t you wait until then...!”
Ichigo noted that her eyes were downcast.
“Why didn’t you believe in us...?”
He heard her unspoken words again.
“Why didn’t you believe in me..?”
He felt bad as he saw the glint of pain in her eyes.
She suddenly lifted her gaze and stared him straight to the eye. Years later he could have sworn he saw a faint glimmer of tear in the corner of her eye – of course, Rukia never had admitted that when asked.
“We are... companions, aren’t we, Ichigo...”
His brown eyes widened at her words. Rukia looked back at him her eyes waiting. Waiting anxiously for his answer. Idly he noted that her cloak was fluttering in the wind.
“...Yeah... You’re right.” he finally said.
The warm smile that graced Rukia’s lips as she heard his reply, filled Ichigo’s heart with deep affection.
The petite female shinigami straightened herself. The usual half-scowl sharpened her features again as she huffed.
Looking back at him over her shoulder she said:
“As long as you understand do not make me do something so ridiculous again!”
She started to walk away from him.
“Let’s go, We don’t have the whole day! We’re going to save Inoue!”
Still sitting on the ground, watching her back as she briskly walked onward a smile spread on his lips. He couldn’t tell how but he could feel the depth of her emotions. Another display of gratitude drifted through the air to him, words never said out loud and still he could hear them.
“Thank you, Ichigo.”
“No. Thank you, Rukia.”
“Remember that I will always return to you.”
“Return to my side where you belong.”
“Because we are a team, Ichigo...”
“Because we are a team, Rukia, you and I...”
“. . . I’ll always be there for you.”
Renji saw the mysterious glow in Rukia’s eyes but said nothing. He supposed this was only one of those things he wouldn’t understand.
Ishida noted the wide smile driving away the shadows from Ichigo’s face and wondered just what had made the young shinigami so happy.
And the two shinigami’s, re-united on the desert both felt content, both understood one another’s feelings perfectly.
Both remembered the unspoken promises they made on that day.
