Hope born anew
It took me quite a time to find her and when I finally did, she was soaking wet.
She was so lost in her own little world that she failed to notice how the heavy stream of raindrops suddenly came to a stop as I brought the umbrella easily over her petite form. I felt the big raindrops starting to make the back of my shirt wet but I really did not care. She worried me more right now.
I saw the all too familiar look on her pale face, that pained expression and the distant gleam in her beautiful eyes. I knew she was once again trapped in her past memories. The dark shadows veiling her face, the sadness so deep it made her still bleed on the inside. Even though I saw she was not shedding tears I knew that her heart had to be weeping.
“You shouldn’t be standing in this kind of a weather dressed like that”, I scolded while frowning, hiding well the worry I felt for her.
She did not reply for a while, merely kept staring towards the city not really seeing any of it, though.
“I hate the rain”, she said softly after a moment of silence, broken only by the ever falling raindrops hitting the umbrella over our heads.
“Yeah”, I grunted in response, “me too.”
And I knew that my face had to bear the same shadows as hers, that the same pain could be heard in my voice, that I had the same distant look in my own eyes while gazing at the city below.
And as we both were lost in our memories, in our own reasons why to hate the rain, the thick veils of dark clouds cracked open and the golden rays of sun fell beautifully amongst the heavy raindrops.
The sight filled me with wonder and I saw from the corner of my eye how she raised her head, taking in the dance of silver and gold.
The sun made our shadows flee and created new ones instead. I watched the dark shadow cast onto the ground. There it seemed as if I was embracing her, as if under the same umbrella we had become one.
That sight made it somehow feel a little warmer, inside.
“Look”, I said, pointing at the sky. “A rainbow.”
The new wonder made her eyes shine ever so slightly as she stared at it like it would be the first one she had ever seen – well, I didn’t really know, maybe it was.
“It’s beautiful”, she breathed out quietly.
“Yup”, I agreed, although my eyes were on her instead of the phenomenon displayed on the sky. I leaned closer and set my hand on her slim shoulder. She semi-turned around and looked at me.
“Let’s go home”, I simply said.
In our shadows I continued to embrace her. I wish I could have done that for real... Well, for now, even this was enough.
“Yeah. Let’s go home”, she agreed. And then she smiled.
It was by no means a happy smile for her pain and sadness were still clearly showing in the depths of her beautiful eyes. But her smile was a genuine smile, I knew that it came straight from her broken heart. And that’s why I think it was the most beautiful smile I’d ever seen.
I turned around and started to walk back home, she followed me close behind.
And as we walked through the rain I realised it.
Sure there would be rain. But the sun would shine again every time after it rained. Who knew? Maybe there would even be a rainbow in the end.
As she hesitantly stepped to my side, as her small fingers intertwined with mine, I felt that maybe I myself could finally smile again.
Our shadows followed us but we paid no heed to them anymore.
It had rained already for so long. For us both. But somehow I had the feeling that it would cease soon. The sun would break through from the hold of the dark clouds…
Together we’d see the rainbow.
The End
