Lunar Eclipse
Chapter 1

InuYasha sat staring up at the night sky, it was coming into the Lunar Month and he was getting worried. He always got a little strange just before it, but this time, he had a deep sense of foreboding.

Kagome, Miroku, Sango and Shippo were gathered around a fire in a small clearing next to a forest. Shippo munched into his food, he was hungry. Kagome sat staring at the sky, she was worried about InuYasha, he had gone away to collect firewood and hadn’t returned.

“Do you think he’s alright?” she asked not turning around to face them. Miroku and Sango looked at each other.

“Who? InuYasha?” Sango looked away and ate her food.

“I’m sure he’s capable of collecting firewood on his own.” Miroku said knowingly.

“But he’s been gone for almost an hour.”

“Well maybe he’s trying to find some quality firewood.” Kagome stood up and turned to them.

“But there’s a forest right next to us! Doesn’t anyone care about him but me?” she shouted. She marched into the forest to look for him. Miroku, Sango and Shippo exchanged glances.

“Boy Kagome lost it!”

“It’s alright; she’s just on edge because it’s almost InuYasha’s time to change…” Miroku looked at the sky.

“Well…I think that’s what it is…”

InuYasha was getting bored of sitting on the hillside; he got up and brushed himself off, making his way into the forest. He heard a high pitched scream as he entered the thick wood. ‘Kagome?” he thought worriedly.

“Kagome!” he shouted as he ran between the trees with ease. He soon came across a bundle on the forest floor; he ran to it and turned it over. It was a woman, not Kagome, but she looked hurt. She opened her eyes and stared at InuYasha, not in a frightened way, but curiously.

“Are you hurt?” He asked staring at the blood on her sleeve. She looked at him confused for a moment, and then fainted. ‘Damn it…’ He thought, and picked her up. ‘I’ll need to take her back to the campsite…Damn! Why do all these things happen when I’m about to turn!’ he grumbled and ran through the forest to the campsite. The group looked at him and the woman. Miroku’s eyes lit up as he placed her down.

“Oh what a beautiful woman! Is she badly hurt?” Sango growled at him, he could never just focus on one woman at a time.

“I think she has a wound on her arm, other than that she seems fine.” He looked around the campsite. He frowned.

“Um where’s Kagome?” Shippo looked up at him innocently.

“Um…she um…went into the uh….forest to….um…get you?”

“What?! You let her go in there on her own! Argh!” Shippo jumped out of the way and ran as InuYasha tried to step on him. ‘Grr there’s no time! I have to find her!’ He thought, ignoring Shippo. He ran into the forest screaming her name, trying to find her.
Kagome wasn’t frightened of the forest, she quite liked it, but she was having a hard time finding InuYasha. She heard someone calling her name, she turned around but it stopped, she continued, not really paying attention. She hadn’t been looking for more than 15 minutes when an angry InuYasha jumped in front of her. He grabbed her by the shoulder shaking her.

“What did you think you were doing? Going into the forest unarmed? Huh? Not even knowing the way back! Are you being crazy?” he yelled still shaking her. She looked down, InuYasha heard her sniffle, he felt a wave of guilt, not that be was going to show it though.

“I was coming to get you, to make sure you were safe! You were gone an hour!”

“So freakin’ what? I’m gone days and you don’t worry as much!”

“Well it’s your time isn’t it!? You’re getting weaker! I just wanted you to be safe! Is that some kind of crime around here!?” tears formed in her eyes and ran softly down her cheeks. InuYasha felt guilty for shouting at her.

“Kagome I-”

“Save it!” she said wiping her tears, she ran past him.

“B-but! Hey! Kagome I-” She didn’t look back, but she shouted loud enough for him to hear.

“Sit boy!” Kagome didn’t stop running. The spectacular smash into a fallen tree echoed off the trees. InuYasha mumbled when the echoes had stopped, his face still in the ground.

“Mut nime norry….ugh…”

Kagome finally reached the campsite, but before she entered the opening, she straightened herself up and wiped her tears. She entered looked happy, and carrying some firewood. She saw the young woman and Miroku fussing over her. She had woken up now and Miroku wouldn’t shut up.

“Now are you sure you are in an okay condition to be sitting up?”

“Um, why yes thank you.”

“You are sure? I will begin to bandage your arm, I have some herbs that will numb the pain and then I will clean the wound.” She smiled at him while he busied himself and looked nervously at Sango, who was giggling. Kagome sat down beside Sango and Shippo.

“What did I miss?”

“Nothing much, InuYasha came back and gave us this woman, she must have fainted in the forest, then he came back and—”

“He tried to step on me!” Kagome patted his head.

“Don’t worry Shippo, I punished him.”

“Anyway, he came back and got all flustered because you went out into the forest to look for him, then he ran off, haven’t seen him since…” Shippo frowned looking up at Kagome.

“What do you mean ‘You punished him’?” just then, InuYasha came staggering through the trees into the clearing, and collapsed near Kagome.

“I punished him.” Shippo looked at him gritting his teeth.

“Ouch…” he said approaching InuYasha, he knocked on his head a few times. InuYasha moaned and punched him. Shippo jumped back and ran to Kagome. InuYasha crawled to a space beside Kagome and rested.

Miroku had finished bandaging the woman’s wound and was sitting smiling at her. He took her hands in his.

“Thank you so much kind monk.” She smiled bowing a little.

“It was my pleasure! But I have a serious question I wish to bequeath upon you…” She stared at him wide eyed. Kagome and Sango whispered to each other.

“Here he goes again, I knew it was coming.” Said Sango, frowning.

“Well I don’t expect any less, but you know I really thought that they were hitting it off, you know, without any butt rubbing and such.”

“Yeah so did I, oh well, I hope she slaps him.” InuYasha’s ears twitched and he turned round to see some hopeful action.

“Well, I was wondering, if you would consider bearing my child.” The woman looked dazed for a moment and then laughed. Miroku looked offended.

“I assure you, I am being deathly serious.” The woman coughed and blushed.

“Well I assure you, kind monk, that it is in your profession not to be involved in that art.” Miroku’s face fell and there was a bout of giggling from behind him. His head hung and he sat beside the woman.

“I can’t believe you would ask me such a thing when you don’t even know my name.” Miroku perked up a bit.

“How about if I asked you when I did know your name?” InuYasha sighed and made a disgusted face.

“Oh brother….” InuYasha said and turned over.

“He never gives up does he?” Shippo asked, not to anyone in general. Kagome sighed and put her hand on InuYasha’s head, stroking his hair gently. InuYasha smiled to himself. ‘She’s forgiving me eh? Uh…not that I needed forgiving! I didn’t do anything wrong…hmm….that’s nice.’ He nudged up against her hand, wanting her to give him more attention. She smiled and scratched behind his ear. He stretched out his leg, loving it. The young woman was staring at them both, smiling at them. Miroku followed her gaze. Then out of the blue she said,

“No.”

“Oh I see, well out of interest, what is your name?”

“Meko.” she said, her gaze never leaving InuYasha and Kagome. InuYasha was in ecstasy, she was scratching behind both his ears now. He sat up and nudged his head under her chin, she smiled and hugged him. InuYasha looked over at Meko and her stare, he narrowed his eyes, he was about to sit up, but her stare subsided and he snuggled back into Kagome.

“They are a lovely couple, aren’t they?” she whispered to Miroku. Miroku looked round at InuYasha and Kagome snuggled up together.

“Yes they are, well suited to each other too.” Miroku sighed. ‘I could only wish for a relationship like that, all I want is an heir for my family, then if I die, I know I can rest in peace.’ Meko looked at him, at his sad eyes, he was telling the truth but she couldn’t give him her children, she had her own circumstances to think about.

“I’m sure that a beautiful woman will come your way someday and she will bear you children, you are young monk, you have plenty of time, next time a woman comes your way take the time to get to know her, and then maybe you will have something that will last…” Everyone stopped and turned to look at Meko, a soft tear ran down her cheek, ‘Love’ was something that she could never have. Miroku smiled and put his hand on her shoulder.

“I’m sure the same will happen to you.” She nodded, knowing that it wasn’t true. She looked over at InuYasha and Kagome, they were sleeping, snuggled up in each other’s arms. She smiled at their happiness, glad that they had it.

“Well I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m exhausted.” Miroku said, and yawned, he lay down on the ground next to Sango and slept, Sango soon after. Shippo was nestled in between InuYasha and Kagome’s arms sleeping. Meko sighed and lay on the ground, it was close to sunrise, but she was so tired. She slept watching the sun come up, in company, she was happy.

When she awoke it was mid afternoon, most of the campsite had been cleared, she yawned and rubbed her eyes. InuYasha looked over at her. ‘Who is she? We know her name, but not her past….I wonder if she’s a thief of something?’ he yawned and stretched, then walked over to Kagome to investigate the situation of having no breakfast.

“I’m sure I packed it! Oh where is it!” Kagome was rummaging through her bag like a fiend.

“It’s okay Kagome. We can eat grass.” said InuYasha slyly. Kagome turned to face him while Shippo kept going through the bag.

“Shut up! Who asked for your opinion!” she turned away again and muttered under her breath. “Sit Boy.” InuYasha smashed into the ground, he moaned.

“Ow….” Kagome giggled and searched through her bag once again. She pulled out some packages.

“Ahh! Here they are!” The group dug into their meals happily. Except InuYasha who was sitting staring at the sky. Kagome touched his arm.

“What’s wrong?”

“Have we got anything to do today? Cause if we have, I want it over and done with.” He didn’t look at her.

“Well I don’t think so, I think if we stay here we’ll be okay.” InuYasha sighed closing his eyes.

“Good, I don’t want any trouble.” InuYasha opened his eyes, staring at the sky, the moon wasn’t coming out tonight. ‘I wish I could just stay human, or demon….I just want to be one or the other!’ InuYasha’s thoughts reflected in this body language, his fists were clenched and his teeth bore. Kagome picked up a rice cake.

“InuYasha?” InuYasha turned to face her, and she shoved the rice cake into his mouth. He bit the end bit off and held it. Shippo laughed delightedly.

“Haha! He look’s like a hamster!!” Kagome and Sango laughed at InuYasha with his bulging cheeks and innocent look. He munched some in his mouth and swallowed, but his cheeks were still bulging.

“Fee foved it in I mouf!” and pointed to Kagome, he started to choke, she laughed and rubbed his back. He spat the rest out, coughed and growled at her.

“Why’d ya do that?!” he shouted angrily. Kagome and he fought happily, while the others stood back and sighed. Meko, once all the fighting had stopped, approached the gang and bowed.

“I am sorry if I caused you any undue trouble, I will be on my way now, thank you for all your help.” She looked to Miroku.

“And thank you kind monk.” She smiled, bowed once more and walked out of the clearing. They said their goodbyes and went back to…well fighting. After a long restful day, InuYasha sat waiting for the sun to go down, Kagome sat beside him trying to comfort him. ‘I just want it over and done with, then I’ll go back to my normal half demon form and do everything I need to do till the next time.’ InuYasha sighed heavily, snuggling into Kagome’s shoulder, he missed his transformation, but he woke just before sunrise. His human feelings taking over, he kissed Kagome gently on the cheek while she slept, and shielded his eyes while the sun came up.

“Well at least it only happens once a month…” he said cuddling into Kagome. Waiting to change he opened his eyes, the sun was shining strongly on him, it had risen into the sky and he hadn’t changed. He stared at the sky, eyes wide in horror.

“Kagome? Kagome!!”
