View Full Version : Aizen's VA checkin' in.........

Hey guys,
Wanted to drop by and say hi. I recently announced that I will be voicing Sosuke Aizen (debuts on episode 23). This past week, I was also cast as Ganju Shiba (debuts episode 22). I post on the forums over at Naruto fan (along with many of the other dub VAs) and when I got cast on Bleach, Bleachportal.net was the first site I went to.
I'm new to Bleach, as I just finished watching the first DVD that came out this week. As with Naruto, I have not seen the fansubs, and my schedule is too jam packed to catch up. But I thoroughly enjoyed what I've seen so far, and what I've been able to dub as well.
I know that getting the voice right is a main concern with fans. My voice for Aizen is similar to Karasu from Yu Yu Hakusho, without the creepy factor. Just deep, calm, collected. Ganju will be deeper, more brash, over the top. Think of a spinoff of Patrick Warburton, from the back of the throat.
I've only recorded once on each of these characters thus far, but rest assured, I want to do right by the fans. You guys make a job like mine possible. I'll be checking back here from time to time.
If ya wanna chat, I'm on AOL Instant Messenger a lot. My screenname is "kibavox". You can also check my Myspace (www.myspace.com/kylehebert).
Take care!

Wow! I think you're our first Eng. VA to post on our forums (tell Johnny to high-tail it over here)!! Welcome Mr. Hebert! ... Can I call you Kyle? ^_^
I really hope that you do a good job with Aizen. I loved you in DBZ, in fact, I was just watching DBZ: Wrath of the Dragon on Toonami last night, I'm sure you remember it. :)
Hope you have fun on our forums! Don't worry, we're very active. ^_^

Ah, Kyle's joined this board as well? I was amazed that so many voice actors jumped on the Narutofan boards when the show started, but I never bothered to register there. Glad to see you getting interested in your other shows, too.
I'm really anxious to be hearing your take on Aizen, even though you've explained it's somewhat similar to Karasu. And you also landed Ganjuu? That kind of role was something I'd originally figured Chris Sabat would do if Bleach were being done by FUNimation. He's like the Kuwabara of Bleach. I was actually hoping you'd land Ikkaku for a secondary character. But it's really cool for you to be getting all these good roles since you moved to California. For the second arc, at least, Ganjuu's a pretty prominent secondary character.
Anyways, congratulations on landing Aizen! You couldn't have asked for a better role.

Oh, yeah, one more thing I'd like to add. If you see Johnny, Derek, or Michael (Sorich), can you ask them if Ichigo and Uryuu will be refering to each other by "Kurosaki" and "Ishida"? It would really make a lot of fans and viewers happy.
I mean, if Yusuke and Kazuma could call each other "Urameshi" and "Kuwabara" in Yu Yu Hakusho, and Yugi + everyone else could call Seto "Kaiba" in Yu-gi-oh, then why can't Ichigo and Uryuu call each other by their family names and given names as well? I mean, Ishida is a whole lot easier to say than Uryuu anyway.

I certainly wasn't expect a Bleach VA to post in these forums but it's not something too strange either. Anyway, I'm certainly looking forward to hearing what your rendition of Aizen and Ganju sound like, Mr. Hebert. I'm sure you'll do a great job. Welcome to the Club Bleach Forums.
Btw, I enjoyed your work as Vato Falman in FMA

Well, welcome to the forums! I am a big fan of Naruto and was a big fan of DBZ back in the day so i am familiar with your work. I will be very interested to see how different you voice the two characters you have been casted for in Bleach as they are two contrasting characters.
Well i wish you the best of luck with your new roles and i hope you do them justice :P

Hey, Kyle. Welcome to the forums. Awesome having the first voice actor to come here. You must be quite busy. I'm wondering which episode are you guys at the studio on? Also, get some of the other voice actors here. That'll be even more awesome.

Thanks for all the support, guys. I acknowledge the popular request to get other VAs to post here, but its not as easy as it seems. We record individually, so we rarely see each other. If I can garner any interests from the others, guaranteed it will take time. So, I can't make any promises.
Wow, OMG, is this real? Nice to meet you, Mr. Hebert. I hope you will do well as Aizen and Ganju. Since Aizen is the main villain, people will be expecting a lot, but no pressure!

Thanks for visiting the forums, not many VA's do that, I hope you do well on voicing Aizen and Ganju, I'm sure you'll do fine.

I hope this is a serious post. If it is, welcome. I'm also a big fan of the old DBZ days. Anyways, back to Aizen. A little tip if you didn't know is to make Aizen sound.. mysterious. It's just the way he is.

Congratulations on landing the job as Badass Aizen! I'm sure you'll do his character justice, if not... we now know where to find you (in an internet messageboard sense... *end stalker*) but seriously, I hope you have lots of fun!
Also, Ganju?? AWESOME!!! Bit of a difference between him and Aizen though, but I'm sure you're up to it!
Looking forward to your appearance in Seireitei!

I got your private message, and the way this forum is set up, I can't reply unless I have a higher post count.....so here I go replying to each message.
Regarding the sick joke thing, trust me, I'm sure people have better things to do than pose as an anime voice actor. I consider myself very humble, and that I'm just a regular guy with a cool job. I advertise my AIM name on my site and Myspace, and plenty of folks can vouch for my validity. Most actors are simply too busy to devote time to checking forums, etc, but interacting with fans and getting feedback has been very important to me as long as I've been doing this (since 2000).
The guys in charge on the show dug my auditions enough to cast me on two roles for the show, and the dub's gotten a lot of positive praise thus far. I certainly hope you guys dig my performances. Ganju won't show up til episode 22 and Aizen in 23.....so its still a few months off.

I was psyched beyond belief to get Aizen....though my exposure to the show is extremely limited (I've only seen the first DVD). Fans have filled me in on how important he is in the show. Can't wait!!!!!!
Getting Ganju is like a double-whammy. Yet another extremely fun character to play and a total opposite from Aizen. Hope you guys dig the voices I gave them both in a few months when they first appear on Cartoon Network.

Hey, telling someone to do something right is one thing, but it put's tremendous ammount's of pressure when you threaten them.

Yeah, no kidding. Threatening the guy, even if you don't mean it, sounds a little too psychotic for my tastes. I prefer my psychosis to be mild, like the voices in my head or the sauce on my tacos.
There have definitely been a few voices on Bleach that don't meet my standards, such as Urahara for one, but mostly my beef is with the casting and directing. Michael Sorich made a few odd casting and directing decisions, but I feel comfortable with what Kyle is telling us about how he's going to handle Aizen.

I'll say I did like your work as Kiba in Naruto. As much flak as it gets for being "Americanized" the voices, to me, are right on with the Japanese voices. Bleach has had some really nice work done on it so far in terms of casting and voice direction so I'm sure even it's not on the mark to the .00001th percent I'll still probably accept and even come to like it. I mean I kinda like the Beck-and-Clogs Urahara. ;)

Im also curious to hear this, the original will stay my favorit no doubt, but this way more people I know will give it a look.(Not requesting em to like it, just knowing it before giving there oppinions)
AS for the the line changes i really hope you save this one:
"Admiration is the feeling futhest from the truth"(Said by Aizen)
or atleast keeps it very close to the original
Insted of messing up stuff like what have happend a couple of times to much imo like:
Karin: Ichigo, SAVE ME!!!:eek13: (first episode, Dub version)
Karin: Ichi-Nii, Run Away!! (Japanease version)
This gives a completly opposit personallity...
Dub Version she thinks more on her own saftey then others...
Japanease Version she think more on others safety then her own.
Though i know you are not in the position to change this, i hope you could tell about errors of that magnetude.

Though i know you are not in the position to change this, i hope you could tell about errors of that magnetude.
o_o They really did that? That's just horrible! I hope really hope they don't change Aizen's cool lines.

Hey Kyle. Welcome to Club Bleach xD
You've done a great job in the past like Kiba and Gohan, and I think you'll be perfect for Aizen and Ganju. Congrats on getting both.
I know it's difficult to go to forums when you're a voice actor but to think that you're using some of your time to talk to fans, is a real dedication and gets people excited. It's nice to know some people will go the extra mile to make fans happy. Thanks for that.
And I'm sad you can tell us abut the casting! But we all know you'd get in trouble. I'm just concerned because Wikipedia and Anime News Network say nothing about Byakuya's voice actor and the episode he comes in is in like a week and a half. Like you don't have to tell me who it is, but please if you could, tell us that they atleast have a voice actor. xD
Thanks again for being supportive of your fans Kyle :) I think all of us at Club Bleach wish you the best.
Good Luck on your roles in Bleach and in future casting.

Aizen's my favorite...
I remember on an interview of you you said Aizen's voice was a phone sex voice...which is hilarious...but the original voice actor made him very soft spoken...Aizen was not mysterious when we was pretending to be good. He was very kind, and fatherly, and very calm. I think you should watch the entire arc in japanese before you decide the voice...not to be mean or anything, it's just a suggestion.
o_o They really did that? That's just horrible! I hope really hope they don't change Aizen's cool lines. AH! No! I would cry. Aizen has the best lines...I'm sure you'll do him justice...but I think my favorite line of his is, "It is very difficult to hold back my power so that I do not crush an ant when I step on it."
I shudder to think about Gin's lines...I mean, it's going to be impossible to get his accent in and that's a huge part of his charm...(Gin's my second favorite, do you know who's voicing him?)
I also think it's really cool that you've actually gotten on a fan website to talk to fans. That's awesome :D

I think the reason alot of VA's don't sign up to fan boards is because we fans get so attached to the Japanese voice actors that when something premires in English we have bad to violetn reactions. For example if I ever meet Wally (voice of the English Renji) i'm gonna rip out his Layrx so they are vforced to replace him. then agian i am being a little hard it has only been a few lines that's really not giving him a chance. BUT! if it doesn't improve then my plans will proceed. OH HOLY ****!
I just realized who you are. I believe I sat with you at A-kon once at the Banquet. the Year Scott decided to start a food fight... I could ahve my VA's mixed up but I'm rather sure I sat with you. ANYWAY! Could you ask wally if he could make Renji sound less nerdy? that would be excellent. Damn aren't we fans just demanding? But seriously good luck with Aizen and Ganju. Aizen esspecially is important to the Anime.
Oh and the second reason Va's don't normally sign up for fanboards...is because we are so damn demanding! :D I'll quit being demanding... anyway. if I did sit with you then it would be easy to remember me...or atleast who I was with.
^damn, u make a good point. No wonder so many VA's are avoiding boards like these...

I do realize that the hardcore fans are very attached to the Japanese version, that is, afterall, what they heard first. Dubs are always under intense scrutiny. But I should clarify something that many fans don't seem to understand. Voice actors have absolutely no say in creative decision making. The directors and producers cast actors based on what they have in mind via the audition process. We come in and work with the director to give a solid performance. In the end, if you don't like the way a voice sounds, don't blame the actor. We're just doing our job. :)
Regarding Aizen, I threw out the "phone sex voice" thing moreso as a joke and as an extremely oversimplified description. It isn't meant to be taken literally.
I take my career very seriously, and I want the fans to feel that I have done the character justice. We shall find out within a few months.

Damn, i would have watched the dubbed episode if you had used that voice..T_T...

Wow. You're a great VA, and you've worked on ALOT of great animes. Why are you not as famous as chris sabat or vic mignogna???
Wow, Kyle, I never knew that. I guess that's what voice director means, lol. OK, well then, I guess it would be logical for us to flame them, then? Lol, j/k.

Anyway Kyle... A-kon15 I checkled with the person I was with... and she believes we sat down with you for the Banquet. And So as we are sitting down an idea pops into your head that we need all the table signs.
And so we start off with a table close to us. And we get their sign no problems. After that it was someone's bright idea to steal the sign from Monica Rial's table. Which we did... to whih you wrote "Monica is the Queen of Poo" on it. then a food fight broke out.. .the first butterball flung by scott Mcneil. and in the midst of all this the person I'm with and some otehr fan get into a "disaggreement" about Monica's sign. Ending in blood shed. as sthe sign slips in his hand and slices it open rather good. which he complained about the rest of the banquet.
IF any of this seems familure. Then we are correct in thinking it was you we sat with.

The bigest problem with the change in the lines ain't on the english version... It'll appear if likely other smaller countries use the English version to translate into there leanguage.
The story of the mouth to ear.(It'll get less and less correct)
Well atleast theres some mistakes from the Viz manga that has been corrected in the english dub, which is always a good thing :winking56

Well, I mean have you seen what has happened to naruto and one piece? 4kid's should be shot, but that's for another discussion.
You got the die hard fan's who are used to the japanese version's of just about everything and then when it get's 'westernized' they think that it's defacing the legend which they, themselve's have built up in their own mind.
Because of the aforementioned show's, I heard many of my friend's say how horrible they we're expecting the dubb of bleach to be. I still maintain the fact that in what I have seen, the dubb has been very good and done a majority of the character's justice.
I can understand where they're coming from, but anyone who critisize's the bleach dubb's is an idiot in his own right, in my opinion.

How amusing. Someone who apparently doesn't know anything about the Japanese language lecturing professional anime dubbers about how to pronounce a Japanese name. Sorry, pal, but they're pronouncing Urahara's name correctly.
In Japanese, every syllable sounds the exact same no matter where in the word it falls. The Japanese u is always pronounced as "ooh," and the Japanese r is sort of a combination of an r, d, and an l. It's similar to the Spanish r, except the tongue is only rolled once, pressed up against the pallet as you make the sound. The Japanese "a" sound is also always pronounced as "ah." Also, every syllable is balanced out in how much stress is put on it, with exceptions on double vowels and elongated vowels.
And there you have it. That's how you say Urahara's name: "ooh-r/da-ha-r/dah."

yes that much i understand, but it sounds like theyre trying too hard. WAY too hard. Like it can be said that way and sound normal but it sounds like theyre literally pausing in the middle of the sentence to say his name and then continuing.
OODAHODDA is a little overexaggerated.
Udahada sounds normal though. They sound like they're stressing every single vowel too much and it makes his name sound long. Listen to the way ichigo pronounces "Urahara" in the japanese version, and then listen to how he says it in the dub. In japanese it sounds like his name has two parts. Ura (ooda) and hara (hada). But in the americanized version it sounds as if theyre trying to say it with 4 parts. like Ur (ood) uh(ah) har (hod) uh (ah). It sounds like they're trying, but they make it... i don't even know how to explain it. It just sounds awkward.

I understand what you're getting at when you say it sounds "awkward," but keep in mind that not only do all these actors have to be aware of pronunciation, they also have to match lip flap (which is almost the #1 most important thing when dubbing anime) AND they have to deliver a convincing performance as well. (If they didn't, fans would jump all over them for being too "fake" right?) Not all voice actors dubbing anime have the benefit of studying Japanese, let alone being able to pronounce it correctly. They are primarliy performing for an English speaking audience, who may have little to no knowledge of how the original Japanese translation is supposed to sound. I give them praise for even trying to use the correct pronunciation, and not just switching it to English "Rs." Something is always going to stand out when you mix two contrasting languages together such as English and Japanese.
I've been watching Bleach since episode 1 first aired in Japan, and while I'll be the first to admit that I like the Japanese version better, I think the English cast has done a superb job thus far. I'd rather them "try too hard" to get the names right, and respect Japanese names in general, rather than having them not try at all. Anyone who knows the difference between Rick Hunter & Hikaru Ichijyo will tell you the same.

The japanese version does have four parts the japanese just talk so fast it sounds like its only 2 parts, kidding... anyway I do agree it does sound a little awkward in the dub, but why shouldn't after watching the subs for so long it would be natural for the change to english to be a bit strange.

Hey Kyle. *insert another welcome to the boards here*
I'm glad to see a voice actor taking an active role in the fan community and it gives me confidence for the future of anime and hopefully helps to prevent anymore travesties *COUGH ONE PIECE COUGH* from occuring.
I really enjoy your Kiba on Naruto. He's just as cocky as he needs to be and can still have his quieter more introspective moments. I can't wait to hear how you perform in his big battle during the Sound 5/Sasuke Retrieval arc of the show.
As for Bleach, congrats for getting some major characters. You've already heard how important Aizen is, and Ganju is a great guy to provide a laugh.
I just wanted to give you a couple of tidbits to think on when you are doing the voices. Ganju is a really brash kind of fellow, but there is only one thing in the universe that will make him cry like a baby and cower in fear: his sister. He'll take on anything he has to if forced to it... even if he spends half of his time running away from it. The thing is, his sister scares him to death (with good reason). If he fails her in any way whatsoever, there is hell to pay. That might be a good thing to remember for whenever he faces her. In his mind, he IS the toughtest guy in town...and the only one tougher than him is his sis. What makes it worse for him is, he knows it.
Aizen, for the duration of his time as a "good guy," is definately calm and collected like you described your voice for him. He's also very nurturing and fatherly to his squad as well, in particular Hinamori. He's the "friendly shoulder to cry on," and "will always know what to do" type of Captain.
I'm confident that you've already gotten a good idea of his character nailed down. Whenever you get so far as the episode where he reveals his true nature you might find a good comparison of character in the dubbed Sephiroth from Final Fantasy Advent Children. The voice actor in that did a real good job of conveying confidence, power, and knowledge. He was also convinced that his way was the best way, despite what anyone else thought. Perhaps the most important comparison between the two would be that Sephiroth did respect his opponents abilities, while at the same time being able to dismiss them as insignificant in light of his own.
Sorry for the very long post, but I have trouble sometimes getting all my thoughts out in just a few words. If any of that proves helpful in any way, then that's all well and good. Whatever the case, I look forward to your work. Keep it up.
P.S. Teen Gohan rocked.

I've been chatting with Kyle on AIM. I know for a fact he doesn't like spoilers, so he hasn't watched the subs. He was already spoiled when he went in to read for Aizen and they told him that Aizen turns out to be a bad guy. He'd rather not know, and find out like the rest of the people who watch. It's just his preference, I assume.

can you imagine, your reading and somthing good happens and your all noooooo way, or wft. that would be so fun.
i talk to the voice director for paranoia agent over on the adult swim boards, and he was giving his production notes for each ep (hes not quite done yet, i think they are on ep 7 or somthing) and he was saying that with one of the characters he did not want him at all to know what was going on, so he voiced them in a particular order so the actor would not know what his character was going to do. i think it worked well. i wont say which character that was you will just have to pop over there and look for your selfs, its in the action section as a sticky (or at least it was i havent actually gone in that folder for a while to see what new threads are around in quite some time)

Kyle, I think it's pretty awesome that your doing Aizen, I'm sure you're gonna do a kickass job like you did the rest of your characters. I really like how you potrayed Kiba (Naruto) and Teen Gohan (DBZ). Since basically most of us started off with the original Japanese version (with subtitles), we got used to the Japanese voices and some of us are still growing into the dub. I pretty much like the dub, and the voices suit the characters rather well. Oh yeah, and I read on Wikipedia that Hinamori is going to be voice by Colleen O' Shaughnessey. Is that true?

I know that getting the voice right is a main concern with fans. My voice for Aizen is similar to Karasu from Yu Yu Hakusho, without the creepy factor. Just deep, calm, collected. Ganju will be deeper, more brash, over the top. Think of a spinoff of Patrick Warburton, from the back of the throat.
Take care!
i think i can sort of picture it....i watch a lot of Family Guy so i've heard a lot of his voice as Joe Swanson. but definitely with the nature of Aizen's character it was a smart move to get your voice deeper than Patrick's in order to do Aizen.

ok, I said I'd pose you a question, cause this one's been on my mind for a little while, so here goes..
I know in acting when a person portrays a role in a tv series and/or movie that they say sometimes they do certain things to bring something to the role and sometimes they walk away after the role has ended learning something from said role as well.
Is it the same way with VA work Kyle? is there anything you bring to Ganju or the captain that gives them life as you're voicing and something maybe that you've learned from voicing these two?

Good question! I know that typically actors do channel some sort of life experience when getting into a role. Myself, I just sorta get into "the zone" with where the character is mentally in the scene. I don't ever particularly rely on memories to help build anything in a performance. As a dub actor, the set up is always dictated to us by the director plotwise. I thoroughly enjoy getting to portray these various characters in all of these shows. Its a virtual playground that is always a blast to be let loose on.

is Byakuya's VA really Dan Woren? cuz his name does not show up on the credits. what's it like VAing? and how long does it take per episode?
Aha, he is.
Here is the info:

@Aizenvox: May I ask you few questions? i will browse the whole thread first to ensure you won't be repeating yourself and ask questions you already answered. I'll post sometime tomorrow. :)
o man I love dbz It was the first anime I ever liked. I love your work, and I hope you do ganju and aizen justice.

I checked out the Dub for Episode 23, I have to say you pulled it off great, the voice had the kind sound it has in the beginning yet it still had the mysterious sound as well, nice work.
As for Ganju, you kept the brash sound his voice had in the original, you did a great job on both voices.

Haah. :)
I can tell you're having a blast voicing Ganju. :D But isn't Aizen somewhat of a challenge?
I never really knew, or heard you do any villians or characters that go through bi-polar changes of a sort(with the jap VA being quite the exception).
AT this stage, I'm assuming you have already gotten to the parts of "Aizen's Grand Resurrection" so to speak. How you holding out on that end?

Aizen comes particularly easy since its very close to my natural voice. We're just now hitting the early 50s dubwise. :)

Ah, still a little more while to go til you find your dark side.
Try to check some youtube vids of Overlord Aizen voiced by Sho Hayami, to get a good idea.
It can't hurt, right?

You did a really good job in 42! Managed to capture the fear and shock facing someone as powerful as Byakuya very nicely! I loved the part when Ganju is shocked from Byakuya's initial release. Nice1! :biggthump

yes, i go there at least once a day. but i'm kinda perturbed about how his name doesn't appear in the credits. do you have any anime that features Mr. Woren using Byakuya's voice in any other anime, hmm? The way he said "Senbonzakura" was hilarious.
@Aizenvox: When i got into Bleach. Aizen was the first character I drew. Tell me what you think! Sketch (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/59971386/)

I'll tell ya, voice acting is so much fun. I wouldn't trade it for the world, and getting to voice on such an awesome show as Bleach, I feel REALLY privileged! You guys make my job possible. Thanks so much for the kind words and support. I cant' wait to voice the later eps. And with Bleach DS and Bleach Wii on the horizon, my gaming inner geek is salivating. WOOT!

Not sure about wi-fi support on the DS game. I'd assume so. I mean, you can play Jump Ultimate Stars online against anybody so localized playing shouldn't be an issue.

Man, I'm liking you more by the seconds. We ought to organize a game sometime.
Anyways, concerning voice acting, I'm actually gonna steer in that direction a little bit, and currently taking theater arts in college. If all works out, I just might be able to make a sidetrip career towards voice acting.
Who knows, in the near future, we might work together. XD

Jinchuuriki, there is no need to say things like that. And I just deleted 4 of your posts from the Bleach Dub section because you have been posting 1 line spamming posts.
Verbal warning for the spamming.
You're doing a good job Kyle. Is it hard though, this is the first villian role I think you've done as apposed to all your DBZ heros. The main villian no less. Scared?

I can't really disagree with him completely.
Kyle, if you're reading this, and I know you're not... it really wouldn't kill you to visit the forums and your fans every once in a while when you're not busy, rather than playing on your 360.
Also...it wouldn't kill you either to post outside your own thread...:whatevah:

Hey guys,
It has indeed been quite a while since I've been able to visit here. Been uber busy dubbing on numerous shows and video games.
I'm TRULY thankful for all the support. Aizen has been out of the picture for a long time, and after recording his return many months ago, I couldn't wait to get back here to see what you guys thought. I am very anxious to hear everyone's feedback over the next few weeks.
To address Dr. Walker's reply...........I interact with fans on a daily basis, most often on AIM and on my MySpace page. I'm lucky if I have time to see what's been posted on my own fan group's board. There is only so many hours in the day and I do my best to talk to as many people as possible. I enjoy playing video games just as much as anyone else does. I've even enjoyed many matches with other fans. I devote more hours on AIM than I do on Xbox Live. Just exercising my right to enjoy some leisure time.
Earlier in this thread, I did make it clear that my time is limited. I strongly encourage anybody who'd like to chat hit me up on AIM or MySpace, or even email me thru my own website. I posted here initially to reach a group of dub fans who may not be aware that some dub actors (in this case, myself) ARE interactive with fans. Club Bleach's forum subsections are quite expansive, and there simply isn't enough time to devote to thumbing through thousands of threads. I apologize that my presence here has not been as often as I'd like, but again, ANYBODY can reach me on AIM (kibavox is my screenname) or MySpace (www.myspace.com/kylehebert).
I will do my best to check this thread as well as the threads dedicated to reviews of these particular episodes over the course of the next month. Everyone's critiques and opinions are welcome.
