View Full Version : Is this generation losing interest in reading?
I'm probably one of the few students in my school that loves reading (and our school is very distinguish, mind u) and find classical literature to be interesting. Since most people my days prefer to play computer games and party instead of reading, does it mean that future generations will lose interests in reading too? I really hope that people of future generations would enjoy reading as well, and I don't want this culture to die.

Well I have to say I don't really read that much.(I read manga though!) The only books I really read are Harry Potter, Lotr and some other occasionally. I just am not that interested I guess.
Oh and I read if I have to for school.

I think that this generation has lost almost total interest in reading despite the fact that theres a small amount of people who do read non school related things from time to time.
*sighs* so that means I'm in the minority?

I for one, like to read very much. I don't think that people have lost in reading because I know lots of people who read. After all, this is a Bleach forum. I'm sure if you posted in a literature forum, you'd find hundreds of young people that love to read.
Yay! Hurray for another young person who likes to read. OK, maybe I'll try some literature forums, but I don't think there are that many forums like that... -_-

Well My answer yes, I for one dun love reading either. I read the books I need to read for schoo N the books I want to read wich aren't very many
But I think they are losing interest for reading because we now have television 'N internet. I mean in oldies time books were all there were, now we have tv 'N internet so if I can choose between book and movie most people will choose movie.

It's true that a lot of young people prefer to play video games these days. I think it only depends on the future generations if they want to read and learn literature and also it only depends of the present generations if we can encourage young people to motivate themselves to go to school and study first.

I think this generation is losing interest because, i know for me personally, its hard to get into a book that isn't interesting. I would have to take the time to find a good book and then read it. But it is also hard to finish a book as well just because of all the video games and internet games etc. but i think our generation is .

There are lots of forums based around reading and books. A few quick searches came up with these, most of which have their own book clubs and groups.
Literature Forums (http://www.literatureforums.net/)
Great Books Forums (http://jollyroger.com/greatbooksforums/index.php)
Book & Reader (http://www.bookandreader.com/forums/)
Online-Literature (http://www.online-literature.com/forums/index.php?)
Ah, thank you very much for the links. ^^

Wow, thanks for reminding me that! I forgot that a lot of people were illiterate in the ancient ages... Well, I'll take your word for it; maybe literature won't vanish from our culture after all...

I am a skilled reader who loves a good story. I don't think there has ever been a generation that has had interest in reading, but that doesn't mean that everyone hates books enough to get rid of them. I don't go from one book to another and continuously read, but I have quite a few books under my belt and when someone suggests something I will read it. I get the same "anime depression" (see link at bottom) when I finish a book and I'm so addicted to the feeling now that I'll read pretty much anything as long as it's a good story. This gives me an idea for a new thread. Go see it!

I love reading! I take it in spurts though. I'll read three books back to back and not pick up another one for a year. I think there's too much to do now days for people to really enjoy a good book, however there are always going to be those people who would rather read than watch t.v. or play video games, I'm just not one of them. LOL

Even though lately I haven't read a lot, whenever I get to read a book that I want to I always end up realizing how much I love reading, which I feel I am going to try and read more.

I think it's not. I do read books. And I saw many teens out there reading novels and pocket books.

I personally am a avid and obsessive reader who can't go for over month without a good book. If I read one that is disappointing it doesn't count.
I think reading is becoming less popular as other technologies grow, radio, tv, music(e.g.ipods), video games. However seeing how reading last the centuries, its not like those, it won't go obsilete(spelling?), but it is bad how its getting under used wh so many potential classics out everyday.

Yes, I think the generation is slowly losing interest in reading. With so many distractions like computer games, tv, and outdoor activities, many do not even know the joy it gives to just sit down with a good book and read.
Unfortunately, stereotypical people classify reading (especially for guys) a wussy thing to do...and many (naturally) get triggered by the insult and spend less and less time on reading (due to stubborness)
Reading develops imagination and also helps in creativity. It gives your mind a good mental workout.
I love reading, though I'm more interested towards fantasy and supernatural horror, I still don't ban reading other genres. Books hold knowledge and teaches you a great deal about life, drama, tactics, etc..
We should encourage reading, regardless of what type it is...it may be school textbooks or biographies or the usual fiction ones...reading opens doors to gaining knowledge and wisdom.
