Yarrr.. this is where aall the fantasy and adventure books get together...
Talk about Lord of The Rings, Eragon, Harry Potter, Narnia and other books...
I'll start with this simple question:
What's your fave. fantasy book??
Kenken
12-17-2006, 09:03 AM
not sure, although i like Eragon and HP
i didn't like Narnia and LoTR much cos of the kind of lannguage it uses, a bit of old school, which i'm not used to, i didn't even finished reading narnia O_o
Xkavanger
12-17-2006, 09:07 AM
LotR?? Teh language isn't that bad... but I guess its coz Harry Potter was targetting teh younger peeps.. while LotR wasn't.. I can't say much about Narnia though
Lady1
12-17-2006, 09:08 AM
hahaha i made it!!
Kenken
12-17-2006, 09:11 AM
narnia is like LoTR, the language kinda ahrd to read and too much detail too, oh, and in the The Witch,, The Lion and the Wardrobe, it only mentions the abttle once, it doesn't even described what happened unlike in LoTR

I've read Harry Potter and Eragon. They were excellent. I tried reading LOTR, but the flow of words was...well, I just couldn't keep my interest in the book. =/ I haven't read Narnia either...
I've watched all the movies so far for these four books. So I roughly know the story from the movies...
Thelindra

yea i agree ....LOTR english is like "WOOT~! wth was i reading?" and i reread it again >_>"
i like HP better, easier to read....and ncie storyline...
Cheryl

Lol! Agreed!
HP caters to a wider range of ages...

I like the Artemis Fowl books they are all very exciting
Meh, LOTR is by far the richest in detail and mithology of the group. The reason why young people like HP more is because HP was specifially written for young individuals, whereas Lotr was written out of the author's personal interest. Tolkien never presumed anyone except himself would be interested in his works. He even had the books printed with a religious publisher.

Well I like all of these books. But my vote went for Eragon(can't wait for the third book), HP(probably my favorite of them all, 7 will be awesome) and LOTR(not much to say its a classic, and one of my favorites).
Oh and Artemis Fowl is pretty good as well.
Kenken

that's what makes it hard to read, i tihnk it took like weeks to just finish a chapter that has a lot of detail on it >.>
@cher: LoTR is for adults, as Narnia is for kids
that's because the authors were friends in their days

Just to let u all know...those categories in no way represent the best of Fantasy literature!!!! There was only one REAL fantasy series up there and that was Lord of the Rings...but all the other selections are more for children/preteens.
If u want real classics or big name fantasy, look for stuff by RA Salvator, Tad Williams, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Philip Pullman, and of course Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman!

we just wanted a place to talk about HP, LoTR, Eragon and Narnia, instead of spamming in other threads, as for the title of the thread... we couldn't think of anything else

Yeah well u got me all excited thinking that I had run into a bunch of ppl like me...and then crushed my spirits to bits!!!! lol
But seriously...u should all go out and look for books by some of the athurs i listed. There are many more great fantasy noveliists out there, so don't just stick to the crap that the media pushes on u. Look for, actual, good books!
(By the way HP, and Narnia ARE good books, don't get me wrong! I just hate the way certain books become big only because there is a movie of them!)

LMAO...all the Authors i mentioned have fanominal storylines, but I think Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, would be the best stuff for u! The english is easily understandable...and they are just great fun stories. Those two wrote a lot of the Dragon Lance books...best one to start with would probably be Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Kenken
12-17-2006, 10:54 PM
oh yeah, i heard something about the dragon lancers... unless it was something similar, while looking for eragon in wiki, there were so many links to other dragon stories, so i got lost @_@
for now i'll be happy reading eldest, buying and playing the game, and then watch the movie xD

I started one of the Artemis Fowl boOks... didn't like it so I put it down and never read it again. It was just toO boring and not really easy to understand what was going on. (Or maybe its because I started from the 2nd boOK XD)
Meh, LOTR is by far the richest in detail and mithology of the group.
Remember that J.K. had also written the HP boOks in adult versions
@cher: LoTR is for adults, as Narnia is for kids
That's exactly right

Meh, I hated all of them.
I'm a fantasy elitist, though.
Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks, George R. R. Martin, John Marco, and a few others.
I absolutely REFUSE to read R.A. Salvatore. REFUSE. And I rarely, if ever, read female authors. Somehow, I've just got this strange pattern stuck in my head that every female author focuses FAR too much on romance - I haven't really been proven wrong yet, either.
But yeah, check out any of those for some good reads.

I'll look into those once I finish eldest. I need something new to read after I finish eldest so I will be sure to check it out. I'll get back when I finish eldest.
Hmm, Terry Brooks is really good, too. Loved the Shannara books.

What has that got to do with the fact that LotR is richer in detail?

Y do u not like Salvatore? And there have been TONS of female fantasy authors that don't focus on Romance, and alot of them are even better then some of the ppl u mentioned... Madeleine L'Engle (person that wrote the Wrinkle in Time) for example!
Edit: I did like Brooks, though he seemed to keep going for too long with the Shannara books...

& @Kenta:
Aren't the adult versions of HP a higher level of literature? If not.. then why the heck did she make adult versions?? Just for different front covers?:eek13:

And the first three have myriads of romantic references.
You could say I just crammed your foot into your e-mouth and told you to be quiet, mmmkay?

Yeah but shino nearly all books have some romantic reference of some kind. So thats not surprising there is some especially in a story about a teenager at a school :P.

you said that females authors focus too much in romance, but rowling doesn't, so you lose
and anyways, almost every story has some romance in it, whether it was written by a male or female author :p

In my opinion, Lord of the Rings is one of the best fantasy/adventure books to date. I think it's better than Harry Potter :D
Thelindra
12-19-2006, 09:06 AM
it IS better....but very deep~~ X_X
Kenken
12-19-2006, 09:08 AM
TOO deep for my taste, i prefer the movies... but i hate the narnia books >.<
d_angel
12-19-2006, 09:13 AM
Eh... I heard that Tolkien was a better writer than he was a professor... which doesn't say much, because his writing tended to dawdle where there was no need to. I don't dislike his writing but he does tend to meander with his writing style.
Personally I'm a big fan of the Belgariad and the Mallorean cycles by David and Leigh Eddings. Fantasy that doesn't read like most other literature in the genre. Huzzah!
Thelindra
12-19-2006, 09:22 AM
Narnia is boring >_>; i regreted buying the book...*wans to give it away for XMAS*
Lady1
12-19-2006, 09:30 AM
actually I havent read the Narnia book. I remembered the series from when I was little and so I only went and saw it in the movies.
The Lord Of The Rings book was waaay to indepth for my taste, confusing as well. Actually I dont believe I finished it. Love the HarryPotter books and used to kinda enjoy the movies however the last few have totally sucked.
Eragon on the other hand, which I found similar to tlotr's, was a good book and as yet am to see the movie....wow I think that's the most Ive written in the whole time Ive been on CB XD
Kenken
12-19-2006, 09:32 AM
i finished teh first and third book of LoTR... i dind't finished thes second cos my brother borrowed it and never return xD
Lady1
12-19-2006, 09:45 AM
For the life of me I just couldnt get into it. The book I had was all three combined. I mean I can do big books but that was ridiculas.
Actually you reminded me of somthing. my cousin borrowed it over a year ago and she hasnt returned it..
Kenken
12-19-2006, 09:48 AM
haha, you lucky
Lady1
12-19-2006, 09:53 AM
lol yeah. It would explain why I havent fineshed it. Do you think the movie's were close to the books or are they like everyother movie/book? Meaning that if you read/watch one the other is ruined. Basically like the HP movie/books. I read the books but was disappointed in the movie. (wow thats a long explanation XD)
Kenken
12-19-2006, 09:59 AM
mmm in the LoTR, it was quite difference from the book, but i mean, i hardly could pay attention to the book for being so deep, so i do not care xD
in HP... that's a different story, they cut so much fromt he books >.< and i hate dumby from the movies (3-5)
analog
12-19-2006, 06:20 PM
Yeah I preferred the old dumbledore in the movies. But I still don't like the movies that much. They are ok but nothing compared to the books, they need to make the movie like 6+hours long :P.
Lady1
12-19-2006, 07:00 PM
oh hell yeah! sooo much was missing! I mean I read at least the last two before I go see the movie and im disapointed everytime. I soooo hope they dont screw the new one up.
bugger XD
I missed a post...
@analog - for them to fit everything into the movie from the books yeah they do
analog
12-19-2006, 07:17 PM
I know plenty of people would sit through a movie that long(or split each movie in two so you have Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Part 1(3 Hours or w/e) then part 2(another 3 hours). They just don't make the movie long for the casual movie goers. But if they split it into parts that would be cool.
Anyways Eldest is starting to get really good. Can't wait to go read some more.
Lady1
12-19-2006, 07:36 PM

12-19-2006, 09:39 PM

have any of u guys read The Wheel of Time? Robert Jordan is a crazy story teller

the language is like that because both were written at least 50 years ago. i think i started speaking partially in that "style" after a while of reading lol

You guys should seriously check out His Majesty's Dragon, Throne of Jade, and Black Powder War. All three books are part of the ongoing Temeraire saga and I have listed them in sequential order. They are all by Naomi Novik. She's a new author, but this series of her's has impressed me greatly. The pacing is fluid, her characters are interesting, and the action scenes are very well detailed. Not to mention, Temeraire is the most badass dragon ever!
The stories take place during the Napoleonic era. Novik has reinvisioned that time period to include powerful and sentient dragons along with the ramifications such would have on countries' power and human society. The firest book is about Captain Laurence and a dragon egg he retrieves off of a French ship. Without being spoilerfiic, his life changes greatly because of it. As you've probably guessed, that egg contains the book's other main character.

Yes, Tamora Pierce's books rock. Eoin Colfer rights an interesting plot through all the Artemis Fowl books (anyone who stops on the 1st is missing out, that's just scraping the very edge of the storyline! Poor yous!). LOTR was amazing! And no bad mouthing its vocabulary and beautiful description and metaphors! That's why I love it so! (it got my vote) Eragon was a great book, along with Eldest, HP was great though the story is getting a tad drawn out, I still like it. And Narnia was good. Narnia, te one your all dis-ing. I read when I was 10, the age it was written for readers of, and loved it. You guys should try some books like the Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman if you like philosophical style, or Terry Brooks Shannara books if you like epics like LOTR and Eragon. I could list more but I don't want to rant.
