Simple, which processor would you pick?
AMD AMD Athlon 64 FX-74
Intel Extreme 2 QX6700.
AMD FX-74 running at 3.0Ghz
Intel QX6700 running at 2.66Ghz
AMD is in the lead!
AMD = $550
Intel = $999
Though people may have a preference for Intel I think the quad core chip will change their minds. I'm getting a AMD quad core for my new compy =):Domo

I'll get AMD. I always go for the cheaper item.
But I'm fine with my dual core at the moment, so I won't be getting one too soon.

I still need to get a X64 bit sytem.
But yeah i'd go AMD as well its what im dualin right now plus as said above cheaper = heavier wallet

Ohohoho! AMD's not so arrogant with its pricing anymore, huh? I haven't seen benchmarks and so on on the processors yet. There's more to processors than their speed, as AMD taught Intel a while back.
I've always gone with AMD, but I'll see what happens when I actually go for a computer. I'm impressed by how Intel pwned AMD with its Core 2 Duo series. Heaven forbid, I may even land up with an Intel-ATI computer this year. All depends on what's best for the price at the time, though.

Personally out of preference/experience I would go AMD, but that in no way is me saying they are better.

I would go with intel... as I always have and always will... I dont know, I guess I just keep going with what i was brought up on, and Usually... the cheaper item.. is well.. cheaper. I had a magazine somewhere that showed benchmarks of quad cores and All of these fancy new 8800's... But yeah.. Thats just where i stand on that.. Intel ftw?
Dont you need 2xAMD AMD Athlon 64 FX-74 for it to be quad = $1100?

Oh yeah, you're right! You do need to get 2. So it is $1100, but it's still if not cheaper the same price as Intel.

Wouldn't get any of them. From what I have read, quad cores are not the greatest thing in the world. For one, the software must be written to take advantage of the extra cores (including the OS), and secondly, HEAAAT!!! Those babies would run hot. I have a single core 3.4 GHz P4 (I got it a while ago, that's why I don't have an AMD) and it runs at 60 C regularly (it has peaked in the mid-80s). I cannot imagine what 4 cores would do. Plus, the price is ridiculous, trust me, wait a while. Get the Geforce 8800GTX instead, it would be a better investment.

I heard a Quad Core is useless playing games. Even my dual core has trouble playing games, should have stuck with the 3800+ single AMD core which was cheaper, and I wasn't aware of it. Though a good thing that I can edit videos without lagging my computer which was one good thing.

dual core works great for gaming. no problems at all.
but all benchmarks for quad cores show a definite slowness in gaming scores.
as for heat that all depends on the NM size of the chip engineering. the current core 2 duos are engineered at 60nm which happens to run much cooler than the AMD chips who sport a larger nm build less juice being driven through the chip means less heat smaller means less distance the power needs to travel from A-B .
quad core is still in its infancy wont be long before they out speed out perform dual cores they just got lazy and simply stacked four cores instead of engineering them to work independently while also working together. the motherboards are also lacking in being able to use all four cores efficiently.
wait till next years releases they will have solved a number of the problems making them a much better buy.

From what I understand, the Intel chip is rally 2 Core Duo's stuck together. This is good for the short-term with today's applications. As soon as quad-cores become popular, the AMD chip (which is a true quad-core) will have an advantage because it will be able to truly do 4 things at once.
(In other words:)
The Intel chip is like having four construction workers, but they have to share 2 sets of tools. With the AMD chip, each can work independently.
But at this point, it's not a big deal. Might as well buy whichever comes with the graphics card you really want. Mmmm... polygons...

core 2 duo is already enough to run everything that would be needed on a computer

For you, maybe. But there will come a time when you'll need a quad core just to run the latest games, since single processors can't really get too much faster.
