View Full Version : Need help with making choice

01-11-2007, 02:04 AM
well ok, I want to do something that is related wit computers in the future
But I am confused which to choose
I want to pick the easier one, since most sounded very hard, so could you guys help me out?

Software
Programming
or Computer engineering/hardware

Could someone explains to me which ones are easy, and do you take the same Course on high school?
Like I;m doing Physics, Maths, and other stuff next year, could that get me into those 3 areas??

thanks :)

Well it depends. But I'll go for Computer engineering/hardware. At least you won't have to remember a lot of code and theory if your doing programming.

hmm, i did Software Engineering (basically all Programming) last yr, and it's quite hard.
check this thread for wat i said on it:

Maths might be able to get you into programming although I think you might need I.T.
Physics might get you into software although I think you will need I.T. again, but it should get you into computer engineering.

Computer Engineering is hellish and competitive. Your road blocks would probably be physics, Multi variable Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Medium leveled CS classes like Data structures if you are not experienced with coding, etc.

I would prefer comp sci, so much easier IMO xD. Coding is hell but beats taking tons of math :P

I would have to say computer engineering... Software is ever-changing, so yeah, that's a constant learning curve :D But I'll be with DB on this one... Coding>Math

why don't you take graphic design? it's easy and the salary is not bad, plus you already have some experience with photoshop =S

01-12-2007, 02:50 AM
But I got to Take Art or Graphics for Graphic Design don't I?
well ok, I was going to take that, but then, the last 2 years I took art, and some Graphics, and I thought, "oh I'm better at graphics, I'll just take graphics next year" So I did, and last year I took graphics, then once I study graphics for 1 yr I'm like
WTH, I should have taken Art, This thing is Friggin hard, and I didn't pass Both of my exams
First time I got 35% or something, and last I got 49% xD
So I Didn't take Graphics this year, and I could not Take Art anymore I think, coz I didn't take it last year :(
yes... I'm screwed.. so Graphic Design Is just gone...

Well I was going to take IT, but they don't allow me :(
Coz they said its too easy, it's Just word Processing, so next year I'll be able to take it, since It's not WP anymore.

I think I'm ok with my math, not that bad, but not the top either... I think I'm 9th in the class this year if that's relevant
So.. I'm confused, which one should I take?? Is all of them hard? and are they all the same difficulty??

oh what's Computer science btw xD

EDIT: oh yeah, I did Media Studies too, idk if that can get me to web Design or any other relating jobs..

Computer Science. I'm doing that in one of majors this year. It's where you solve scientific problems, modelling, simulation and visulation. It will require maths and you need to handle with HCI (Human computer Interaction)

Is that really hard? or is it quite easy?
And can I take it with the current subjects I'm taking
(scroll to top for my current subject)

My biggest piecce of advice to you is keep your doors open, or your windows, or whatever it is you use, you don't want to find yourself stuck in som,e jop you don't like.

Anyways I would have to say software programming if your going for whats easier, as its been mentioned above computer engineering sound ***** ass hard with high level math, and no it won't be staying the same, its not like being an electrician, though yes it probably changes slower.
While computer programming is pretty much changing every other day, they're normally not huge changes their normally "tweaks" or whatever, but don't take my word for it I'm not an expert.

On that note I myself am looking to go into software engineering myself, more specifically something is the game deesign., and i was wondering if anyone knew some good online guides to get me into the good programming languages such asc and C++. I am taking IT at school but its a pretty bad class, the teacher bsaically doesn't really know what he's doing and uses guides online to teach us (as in go to this site do what they tell you) or when where working out of book(ok once) he gets pretty much the tests right out the last pages of a chapter(s)

seeing how I'm looking to get into software engineering and have almost no coding skills i am feeling worried.

thing about a computer job is passion for what your going to be doing!

if you don't think you can be passionate about a particular type of job you'll always feel like its sucking the life out of you. think about that before you make a choice simply based on how easy or not it might be.

computer engineering is the easiest (and probably the most fun) out of the bunch.

trust me (since i want to major in software development when i'm older)
it's going to be hard learning some of these coding languages

Go for MIS (Management Information Systems), it is all about network management and security for government and private corporations. I am going to likely major in that and business (finance or management). The money sure as hell looks good (especially if you can combine it with an MBA and make over 100,000/year easily) and you might get lucky with benefits and job security with a government job. Plus, imagine how cool it would be to land a job at the CIA protecting their systems from Chinese hackers.

Of course, you would have a lot of responsibilities in such a job, but the potential benefits (like actually enjoying your job) when combined with a management degree definitely make this the highest paying and most interesting job in IT and computers.

You don't need specific courses in high school for college degrees. Just take AP and advanced classes like I did and get into a college. The only class I ever took in high school related to computers was AP Computer Science (they didn't have any others). If you really want to be serious, go for certification now like I did when I was in high school (A+ and Network+ are pretty easy to get with decent study).

Sorry if I'm assuming you live in the U.S. or whatnot, but the same rules apply elsewhere.

P.S. Software engineering is a pain in the ass (a lot of code, math, logic, deadlines, and not much money) and computer engineering requires a lot of electrical engineering knowledge (which really gets to be a pain after studying it).

Well, here is my expert opinion of each:
Computer programming
Computer programming nowadays is much easier than it has been in the past. Unfortunately, it's hard to find a job as a programmer due to this (easier programming = less programmers needed).
Electronics Engineering
LOTS of math. And few people actually follow through with an EET degree... Most go into CS or something. I actually LIKE all the math, so I guess I'm lucky.
Ultimately, you need to decide which one you like the most. I suggest you try to learn a little programming on your own, and try to learn the basics of electronics (ohms law, etc.) on your own. Then decide which you like the most and stick with it.
On that note I myself am looking to go into software engineering myself, more specifically something is the game deesign., and i was wondering if anyone knew some good online guides to get me into the good programming languages such asc and C++. First, skip Assembly Language. It don't do you any good as a game designer. Secondly, I suggest getting a hold of Microsoft's free Visual Studio Express packages (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/) in your favorite language: C++, Visual Basic, or C#. Then look for some programming tutorials. Some good places to start would be http://www.thefreecountry.com/sourcecode/games.shtml
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Programming/Games/
http://www.google.com/Top/Computers/Programming/Games/
AND ABOVE ALL ELSE go here:
http://www.gamedev.net/ (Check out the DirectX tutorials especially)
Anyway, good luck. Start with some basic tutorials on c++ and then get right into directx programming as soon as you understand enough about c++ to understand it.

First thing you want to do, is check to see what kind of jobs are lacking professionals in all of those areas. If you live in an area that has a shortage of programmers, go that route ;)

But here's the skinny of it....engineering you're looking at being the hardest of the 3, hands down. A minimum of 4 years no doubt. A programmer/analyst course I've seen to both be 2 years at Red River college here in Winnipeg manitoba, and also a 4 year course at the UofM. In terms of the "software" course you are referring to, I believe you may mean "Software Applications" course, which really won't get you anywhere and would be the easiest of the 3, but the most useless.
