Wii: Kids' Gateway to Porn?
Parents worry that porn sites are targeting children.
By Susan Arendt, 01/09/2007 (last week)

It's Tuesday, so somewhere, somebody must be blaming the world's ills on
video games. Today's target? No, not the latest envelope-pushing game from
Rockstar, not even some school-shooting teen who played SOCOM one too
many times. No, today it's all about the Wii, and how it's laying down a stream
of rose petals, inviting porn into your living room.

WFAA.com has apparently only just noticed that the Wii and the PS3 are
capable of accessing the Internets. The station's crack team of reporters has
also discovered that there are lots and lots of pictures of people, you know,
doing it on the Internets. Put six and nine together, and you have this week's
example of mainstream media making much ado about nothing.

It was reported though, that certain porn sites are advertising themselves as
"Wii-friendly," and have reconfigured their sites to work better with the
console's output. Component cables, stat!

There are parental controls on Wii, of course, but since they don't actually
lock the child up until they turn 18, some parents apparently find them to be
insufficient.

Do you think WFAA is over-reacting?
is this really a serious issue? discuss (if you want)

i think they are over-reacting just a bit and besides the internet between the Wii and PS3 will not be ready until late-2007

...what? Wii has Internet capability RIGHT NOW. I don't know about the PS3.

Overreacting, yeah. It's the parents job to keep kids from seeing such things. If you don't let them download the Opera browser for their Wii, it's not even an issue.

Who cares? Not like they can't stroll the internet from a house computer, or a library, or a school computer.....or a PSP. And let's not forget Sidekicks and other communication devices that are internet compatable.

Tasogare is right,
if kids really want to see porn, a Wii or PS3 wont be their only portal.
Computers are everywhere and it just takes a click.
I also agree with esrz22, just dont download the browser for the machines.

i have the PS3 and have been on the internet many times...

as for kids getting on their PS3 and Wii's to look at porn... obviously!!
i dont as im sure many kids dont because they bought there PS3 and Wii to play video games and the browser is just an added plus, most of us have our ocmputers beside our game stations anyways, but there will ALWAYS be SOMEONE looking at porn WHEREEVER and HOWEVER they can.. thats a fact. as long as its around, it will be viewed. If their complaining about this then they should also be complaining about sidekicks and blackberrys and any other internet capable cell phone.. this is just to get some attention as stated.. thats my opinion on the whole thing..

Ya if kids really wanna watch something then they don't need a Wii. I am familiar with the Wii's internet capabilities but I doubt a child would be able to setup up their Wii without their parents noticing.

01-16-2007, 08:23 PM
well their parents could have blocked off the internet, means they won't allow you to go to the internet
I actually don't knew this, about the Wii
I think I have to get it lol :p

but yes, I think kids won't do such thing, I mean without their parents noticing about it,
and yes, they bought the console to play the video games, but boys are always boys, they can't stand it xD
and they will eventually look at it :p

Overreacting of course. They should of expected this anyway, they are like computers, just block them off teh internets.

Well, in my honest opinion I believe this world would be a better place without the internets. Internets cause wars, riots, and bigotry.

I think they are over-reacting. The Wii and PS3 aren't the only ways to get porn there are so many other ways, they could just use there own computer. Some kids are pervs and of course will probably go to porn on thier system but that's the parents problem.

See, this is the kind of thing that makes want to get a Wii.
I could look at porn in my bedroom and my Mom would be none the wiser :)

Mhm, Parents = Trust children not to look at porn
Children = Look at porn anyway.

I think if the childs stupid enough to do it, let em >_>

Kids' gateway to porn? Over reaction, says I.

Much ado about nothing I say, and besides, it's much harder to hide the fact you are watching porn websites if it's being displayed on a wide-screen TV...

That might be true from one point of view, but if there was no internet, those things would happen for other reasons...
People are always looking for reasons to kill each other...
Dont you think so?

There's always going to be something to complain about, no matter what the subject. People just need to learn to get over it.

I sorta' know how you feel, but I'd be nothing without the internet. I think it's just some idiots who would cause those kinds of things. You have a good point though...

As for the PS3 Wii crap, I have a wii, and we have the internet function, and I must say, the internet is slow on our wii. So I think if they're really worried about it, they should just block out the internet on the wii. One kid, who's wii number I had, had his internet removed because he claims I cursed in a message (which I totally didn't) and his parents saw it. So for a while, he hated me, it sucked...

This is so ridiculous, the media these days are simply paid to report complete BS about video games and for some reason they get away with it...I mean, Bioware should unquestionably have sued the people who made up all that crap about Mass Effect despite having never played it...

If parents are so worried about it, they can do what mine did whenever I was grounded. Take the power cables away. Only give them to your kid when you're there to monitor what they're doing. Or better yet, use the stupid parental controls. If you're parents are still monitoring every little thing you do when you're that age, you got bigger problems to worry about than porn on your Wii.

The Mass Effect thing really ticked me off when I first read it also. Why is the media so freaking biased against video games? It makes absolutely no sense.

They only noticed that now? 1 Full year after they were released? Boy are they slow. "Crack" team of reporters? My ass, as if anyone didn't know Google + Sexual words = Porn.

I think its way harder for a kid to configure the WiFi and Opera settings for the Wii that enter a porn site and do a simple step "lie about yout age" to get porn.... this is an over reaction...

RUN RUN RUN!

Wii - you're gateway to porn!

Juan, 8 years old: "I discovered the magical world of porn by using the Wii's browser. Now I can't live without it. It's better than Super Smash Bros."

Herbert, 30: "My wife never wants me to play videogames downstairs. So the Wii got moved upstairs. She never bothers me when I'm playing games, so now I can easily look at porn without getting caught."

It's nonsense of course but it's not worth even pointing out since the media being critical of the games industry has been there since day one and shall remain that way for a very long time. However I think it's worth noting that things are getting better as gaming spreads to wider audiences.
Games will be widely accepted eventually, when the older generation dies out and this generation of people begins to peak, we will have nowhere near as much bashing of the industry thankfully.
