I currently have a desktop . . .

In the not to distant future I am going to be getting a new laptop . . .

I want to be able to use some of the programs I currently have on the desktop on the new laptop but I don't want to transfer all of the HDD data in the process . . .

If I just transfer the program files for the programs I want will the programs run on the laptop the same way it ran on the desktop?

Or will I have to re-install the programs fresh on the laptop?

Well, there is this disk cloning software called Acronis True Image which allows you to create a backup image and burn it into a DVD or CD and you can use the backup CD to restore the image on your laptop. It works pretty well. Here is the link to the software:

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/link/?TrueImage10.0_d_en.exe

If you like it please rep me.

if you don't transfer the OS and registry you will need to re-install.

Can't you just copy the folder of the program you want from the 'C\Program Files\ *Folder of the program*' to your laptop? I do that for programs like DIVX and WinRar etc from my house comp t my school comp.

Yes. but what he questioned:

. . .
If I just transfer the program files for the programs I want will the programs run on the laptop the same way it ran on the desktop?
Or will I have to re-install the programs fresh on the laptop?

The chances of transferring programs to another might not work properly on his laptop. But most of the times. depending on the program. It should work well. If i was in that situation, i would just freshly install it again. but it's up to you.

So if I just transfer everything over to the laptop (OS and all) it would run exactly as it ran on the desktop . . .

I don't know if you do that directly it might not work. Using that program I recommended would work. But you can try.

What programs exactly? Like Dragoneyes say, if it requires registry, support of OS/User accesses, then you are going to have problems. Isnt reinstalling easier anyway?

I have misplaced my Photoshop CS2 disks so I would have no way of installing it fresh on the laptop . . . that's the main one though, all my other programs I could re-install . . . I think . . .

If you remember your photoshop CS2 cd key, then just d/l it online off torrents.

I thought the CD key was connected to the specific copy and couldn't be used on any other copy . . .

Nope, thats probably in the future of technology involving DRM if it succeeds which is unlikely heh.
